Wouldn't have it been better if Whis brought Future Trunks and Mai to the timeline where Cell came from?

It's the timeline where Cell killed another Future Trunks. That same Cell that went into the time machine and came into the main timeline, where the Cell Games happened.

Why the heck does Whis have to bring him to a timeline where there's already an existing Trunks and Mai?

I was thinking the same today. Well, looks like they forgot about this timeline and Whis had no idea about it, so he suggested another option.

No, this timeline is different since a long time, there could be many small difference.
Like the two child maybe don't exist there.

This.

And Buu's revival wasn't stopped by anyone there so he probably killed already everyone.

Technically there would be two Mais and one Trunks (the other one died against Cell). Harem ending?

Well no, Babidi and Dabura should have arrived earlier in Future Trunk's timeline. They would have arrived when Future Trunks was still 8 or 9 years old. Of course, we see now that they arrived at a much later date in Future Trunk's timeline because they arrived well after Future Trunks killed Future 17 and 18 and Imperfect Cell.

That Mai also will be a very different Mai from the grown-up one we see on the show. Without Zamasu/Black being there, or if Beerus kills Zamasu/Black, then there would be no need for Mai to lead the resistance, specially after Future Trunks already killed both Future androids and Cell.

Yeah! Future Trunks can alternate between the Mai he's with, and a slightly younger Mai.

I thought this too. My guess is that they didn't want to risk it and would rather go a completely new timeline personally altered by Whis. Either that or they just forgot about the third timeline.

I don't think there's anyone they could find that has enough energy for Babidi to use to revive Buu.
