The mechanics of the Potential Unlock

Post by TheUltimateNinja » Wed Dec 14, 2016 1:01 pm

Is it additive or multiplicative? I'm somewhat leaning towards multiplicative as Kuririn started off at around 1,500 and ended up at 75,000 by the time the Frieza fight rolled around, a 50x boost.

And Gohan was around the same level as Kuririn but he was up to 200,000 by the time of the Frieza fight, which can be explained by Zenkais from getting his ass kicked, so in his case too the potential unlock is a 50x boost as his power level would probably be 4,000 from Zenkais without the potential unlock.

So, is it just as strong as turning into a Super Saiyan? Would Goku easily dispatch Frieza if he had his potential unlocked?

Depends entirely on the user. As you said, Gohan ended up with 200k while Krillin got to 75k after both of them were roughly on par with one another so there might be a fixed boost initially with long-term growth depending on the individual.

Goku might've gotten a good boost since I'm of the belief Zenkai function to get a Saiyan to a strong enough Base to activate SS but after Namek? I don't think he's got much left in the can after that, his increases are all due to him pushing his limits further and further rather than having a big reservoir of huge power stored away.
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

Pretty much this..
SS was the limit, all the future forms are due to them being training maniacs..
They were unstable forms, it all came down to incorporating that power in regular SS..

Potential unlock seemed like giving whatever you could have achieved till that point if you did everything in your potential..
Hence different people have different results

When they originally got the potential unlock, Gohan and Kuririn were close to the same, though. It was only after their battle against the Ginyu force that the gap in power manifested, and at that time Gohan nearly got killed by Recoome which would explain him becoming that much stronger than Kuririn, he gets Zenkais since he has Saiyan blood.

Maybe because he was kid, as a kid you don't have much potential, he still had enough to be able to match a grown up and conditioned martial artist.. it fits..

I think that when Guru unlocked their potential, he essencially increased the room for improvement they currently had. In other words, let's say that Kuririn's power is 5 and has a potential to reach 20 if he keeps training under normal conditions; when his true potential is unlocked, he is able to reach like 50, which by extention increases his current power (5 - 20 / 12 - 50, something like that). I also believe that their power was growing gradually: against Guru, both Gohan and Kuririn were "over 10,000", they held their own against Ginyu in Goku's body (who had a power or 23,000) and then Freeza, when the effects of the unlock possibly topped out. I believe Gohan had a greater increase, due to three main factors: being half-saiyan, which dramatically increases his power when he recovers from injuries, having a higher natural potential than Kuririn, and finally because Gohan's just a child while Kuririn is already an adult at this point, so presumably Gohan already had more room for improvement than Kuririn.

If Goku got the potential unlock he could easily solo the entire series.

We know BoG Goku still hasn't surpassed Frieza, so he's 120,000,000 at best. with a 50x potential boost Goku would already surpass that on Namek where his power level would go up to 150 million. Combined with SSJ that would be 7.5 billion. So Goku would already be strong enough to clear all of Z by himself.

He could wreck even Whis in Super, even if you assume SSG Goku is only 1% of Beerus, with the potential unlock he would reach 50% of Beerus. Then once he unlocks SSBlue Kaioken x10, he would be well over 10x as strong as Beerus and more than strong enough to take Whis and Vados at the same time. He may even surpass Daishinkan.

Their potential is as far as they can go in that specific point in time, and it gets better the more they fight and train. Gohan's Elder Kai Potential Unlock is somewhat comparable to the best that Gohan could reach on his own through SSJ2 and more. He didn't have SSJ3, and so the threshold to become one turned out to be his full power, when he unlocked it. In my opinion, it's the equivalent of mastering SSJ2 to a point when SSJ3 is only a bonus that strains Goku.

As for the Namek Battle, Goku still hadn't reached 20 times of his battle power, hence why he needed the Kaioken. Once SSJ came in, it turned out to be more. After that, he never used the former again. So, how much stronger can Goku get on Namek? 20 times at base prior to SSJ, 10 times prior to Kaioken x20, and up to 50 times his battle power when defeating Freeza.

Okay, no offense but I don't see the connection between my post and yours.

Anyway, in the original post you're wondering if Guru's potential unlock worked like a ssj boost. In my opinion, they're completly different things: ssj transformation temporarily boosts their power while they remain transformed; the potential unlock provided by Guru seems to offer different, but permanent benefits that are dependent from various factors. One of the reasons I believe Gohan and Kuririn's power grew gradually is because if they got immediatly as strong as they were when they fought Freeza just before they faced the Ginyu Force, alone they would have trashed them by themselves. To exemplify, Gohan's power before the potential unlock was "about 1,500", upon fighting Guldo it was "over 10,000", then he put up a fight against 23,000 power level Ginyu (in Goku's body) and later, according to the guides, it was 200,000 against Freeza. If it jumped from 1,500 to 200,000 right off the bat, it wouldn't make much sense.

Now, if it was Goku getting the potential unlock: theoretically speaking, Goku's body was much more tempered and his ki was well refined to the point that he fully mastered the kaio-ken - evidence of this is the fact of Goku being able to flow his power from 5 to around 60-90,000 (or whatever value he used against Jheese and Butta) and stating to Ginyu he could use the kaio-ken in short burst of power; so, if he got the pontential unlock, he could be around Freeza's 1st (or 2nd form at best) and gradually grow up into the early millions (around 2,3 or 4 millions), similar to the zenkai he got. The reason I don't believe he could grow over that is because I think saiyans have a limit, a cap if you will, to their base forms - a wall which can only be broken by achieving super saiyan.

To conclude, the repercussions Guru's potential unlock through the series would probably have made little difference, because at given points of the plot the unlock would simply allow them to reach closer to each subsequent walls they faced in training. So, is it a multiplication or addition? Perhaps multiplication, but its number largely depends on the conditions it is applied. Again, this is just my interpretation.

There is probably a max amount of potential that can be unlocked based on the one using the power. Sort of like each set of DB has limits.

I believe it unlocks up to that limit and anytjing beyond that can be attained by training. So i believe both were unlocked with different results. Krillin ended up closer to his real max limit and grew less afterwards.
