The writing of Super should not be excused

Post by Shuby » Thu Dec 29, 2016 3:21 pm

Let's be perfectly honest the writing is bad, people who are critical of this series and can't just "turn of the brain" like people suggest one should do to enjoy the show, which does that not mean you're indirectly saying Super's writing is bad? The series is not always great to watch and we have to swallow painfully written sections of the plot, a lot of people defend the writing of Super for several reasons i think the biggest reason is nr 1, (1) They're a big fan of the franchise and don't like it or want to understand why people criticize the show. (2) They legitimately disagree with some statements people make for example Z had not terrible writing (3) They don't seem to understand what people when criticizing the show are trying to imply. Whatever the reason may be i think one thing where we all can agree on is that Super's writting, when it has to explain stuff is bad and misses big opportunities and that's why Super's writing should not be excused because it's "Dragon Ball".. . Be it explaining the little things or big things. Few examples are:

- How was King-Kai's world restored?
- How did the pillaf gang turn into kids?
- Explaining how the ritual made it possible for god-ki to form
-Explaining who Jacko is (Not providing a backstory so that the newer audience can understand this character)
- Frieza's training (did he just beat up Togama for 4 whole months? Or did he do other kind of training? And how can Frieza surpass ssj1, andriods, ssj2, Cell ssj3, Gotenks, All the Buu forms with just beating Togoma who is 1/1000 of Frieza's battle power?)
- Is Frieza's golden form only meant for him? Or did his whole race have the potential to gain this form?
- How did Vegeta learn god-ki without the ritual?
- How and when exactly did Goku and Vegeta learn or have to knowledge to turn into SSJB ?(We saw the process of not letting your ki out, that's explaining one section of the process but not everything.) stop saying they explained everyting

And so i could go on, Future Trunks unexplained form and so on Why Hit wanted the cube and why Champa searched for the Super dragon ball in the first place?

It is objectively true that Super has the tendency to not explain why they are showing us.

I don't think anyone flat out excuses Super's writing but if you break down every arc from the franchise you will find a lot of flaws and unexplained things. Like Kro said yesterday Super shouldn't fall in that trap but I think at this point we should expect things not to get explained. We still don't know why Super Saiyan turns the users hair gold and gives them green eyes and its almost been 26 years since it debuted in the anime.

I would make one exception: the possible Dragon Room spin offs.

If Dragon Ball is really going to be like Star Wars is now in the sense that the main installments are either bad or completely pointless, I can forgive that if the spin off stories are actually good.
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

Yes, Super writing is bad, after Episodes 65-66-67 there are hardly any doubts. A few examples:

- Black was able to deal with both Goku and Vegeta, yet somehow the fusion between Black and Future Zamasu lost two beam struggles in a row. Even if it might have looked less cool, Merged Zamasu should have obliterated Trunks, Vegeta and Goku in an instant. The immortality of Future Zamasu and the endless potential of Black made him the greatest threat the Universe had ever seen, yet somehow a wounded Goku is able to defeat him all by himself;

- Somehow, Trunks was able to learn the Genkidama. And i will conveniently ignore that. Yet, how was Trunks able to defeat Merged Zamasu? Trunks' power was vastly inferior to Zamasu's, Goku and Vegeta were injured and weakened and somehow a bunch of civilians have enough power to give Trunks the strenght to not only match Zamasu's power, but also destroy his physical form. Episode 66 is just bullshit, it might look cool, but its writing is abysmal;

- After all that shit Goku had gone through: being blasted multiple times by Black, being stabbed by Black, being almost vaporized by Zamasu...somehow he still managed to keep a very small button in his pocket. Wow, it sure was convenient Zamasu didn't destroy Goku's pockets, like Frieza for example did in their battle on Namek.

Honestly, Zamasu should come back just because his defeat felt unfair. Zeno didn't destroy Zamasu, the absurd good guys' plot armor did.

Saw not even a harcore fan saying Super has great writing..
Not many people accept this as correct but I believe toriyama's ideas really shines when manga is adapting it, it's all about how characters interact and progression, aka "writing"..
Even if the manga is promotional and is forced to wrap up things in short, it does a wayy better job in catching the interest and conveying the message, the anime is simply shinier and moves..

If you really want to enjoy super and experience better story "writing" , I would say go with the manga

Very good point actually there is a lot of potential for fill in stories. There is so much they can do with the space stuff pre Saiyan arc and then the 7 years between Cell and Buu granted the non other world stuff would have to be played safe but they can go nuts for the other world stuff.

Maybe you have not i am sure you have seen people coming up with their headcanons to explain such as Trunks new unexpected transformation, which is the same way of telling the writing is not bad because of ...... <--- enter headcanon explanation.

I'd say Super's writing is no better or worse than the original series( Z included). There's good stuff and bad stuff. Super's writing has been the single most consistent thing for the most part. The writing staff clearly favors style over substance and they have made that pretty clear. Tomioka's scripts for the Trunks arc was pretty damn good and even Toshio managed to write some good scripts which I assume cause of Tomioka assisting him.

It's everything else that Super either fails at or is not able to maintain a decent quality. The music and sound effects have been goddamn garbage so far leaving no impact at all which was one of the franchise's strengths in the past. Animation and direction wise it has shown some improvement, but still suffers from the awful scheduling issues and lack of good staff. Even the good staff aren't able to go all-out and do their best cause once again of the schedule and lack of time. And, the bad episodes look very bad.

The backgrounds are pretty lifeless mostly, the photography and composition department again cause of the schedule are rushed and they even screw up the good pieces of animation with excessive motion blur and shit. So, more than the writing, it's these areas that Super needs to improve on. This is more annoying than the writing.

Dragon Ball was never that well-written anyways and always followed a formula and Super is no different. It's purpose is to entertain and at least in terms of script and character interactions it has managed to entertain us. If only, it had a decent production it would be so much better.

A lot of the new forms in DBZ went completely unexplained too for a long time. What is SSJ2? What is SSJ3? They're largely just there.

King Kai's planet was probably re-created for him by the other God's. Pilaf explained how they turned into children in the Beerus movie, sadly the line wasn't include in the series.

Potaras got nerfed, for both Vegetto and Merged Zamasu, we could imply Gowasu stament of Merged Zamasu power increasing exponentially was him going senile.

Despite being injured, Goku and Vegeta energy was still vastyl superior to the energy used on the Genkidama that killed Kid Buu, remember they are God-Tier. The whole giving away ur energy to someone else started off with Goku attempting to save Frieza back on Namek.

I dont remember Frieza doing that in the manga, link plz.

That's trivial it's a transformation, the form is post to look distinct. That's equivalent to saying why is the aura of Kaioken is red?

While the writing isnt amazing the truth is its a little boys show. In that context its fairly good.

If you dont enjoy it perhaps youve just grown beyond this entertainment.

That's exactly my point we're given these forms and told to go with it. Exactly the same happened with Trunks we we're given a form and we're told to go with it all we knew was it was above his previous form. It was exactly like SS3 Goku. Out of no where Goku pulled that out and we we're told to go with it and zero explaination was given except it was stronger then his previous form.

I rarely see people out right excusing the writing. I think most know that the writing in Super isn't the greatest, especially compared to other shows out there.

But is it bad because it doesn't answer a few questions you have? A lot of you're questions are very trivial/ not important information. Do we really need to know if freezas whole race can go gold? It would be nice to know sure, but is it important?

I can pull a random list of trivial questions Z never answered either.
  • - Why does absorbing 17 and 18 make Cell so much more powerful than any other character to the point that Vegeta, who was toying with his second form, is unable to even damage Cell without his most powerful attack?

-How did a human scientist create multiple beings in a lab that were more powerful than Super Saiyans, despite not having data on what a Super Saiyan even was?

-How do Goku and Vegeta become Super Saiyan 2?

    - How does Gotenks become Super Saiyan 3?

    - Why does Gohan's potential keep changing to match the needs of the arc?

-Why did Supreme Kai not even know what a Potara earring was?

-How does Majin Buu's absorption work, exactly? Both the mechanics behind it and why Gohan and SSJ3 Gotenks couldn't just blast the goo off themselves

-How did Ultimate Gohan fail to catch a Potara earring thrown by Goku when SSJ1 Gohan was catching point blank machine gun fire earlier in the arc?

    - How does a Zenkai determine how much power someone gets? Why are some minuscule and some gigantic?

-Why was Cell able to regenerate a new head after Goku blew his head off if he needs the cells in his head to regenerate?
And I don't use this to excuse any bad writing. Obviously just because The previous series have made mistakes doesn't mean Super has to repeat them. The show should always be trying to improve. But my confusion usually comes from is when people hate a certain aspect of super and pretend like it's a new problem only super has had when it's been in Dragonball since the very start. Like inconsistent power levels.

It didn't seem like your point at first, from my POV it seemed like you were trying to nitpick because there wasn't an explanation given for the appearance of it. I'm not disagreeing that Trunks and SSJ3 were both asspulls, however their was an explanation on how SSJ3 was attained, Trunk's transformation doesn't even have a name to it.

I could ask those questions too, but you get my point. I think Dragon ball had consistent story writing because Toriyama was making things up as he went through the story and begin parts of Z were solid (saiyan arc and Frieza arc). A show should definitely improve by time which Super is unfortunately not doing.

1. I don't think that anyone here excuses super's bad side a lot of people criticize it while liking the show, such as Lord Beerus, Kinisking....etc.
2. Objectively good/bad doesn't exist.
Just look at ep 67 ending which a lot of people hate and call bad writing but at the same time other people like it and think that it was well done.
If A has reasons to back up his/her thoughts and B does the same then in that case there's no good or bad, it's all up to one's changing interpretation. Hell, i've seen people who liked RoF and disliked BoG when I think that RoF is one of the worst things in this franchise.
I really miss ma boy, Black :(

Well I don't know if Toriyama making things up as he went is what made DragonBall consistent. (Relatively) But I would argue that super is improving. Maybe not by leaps and bounds but it's certainly better then when it started. Wither it's still Good or not is entirely up to the individual viewer though. People look for different things in the series and a lot of people find them here in Super. Me personally, for the most part, this show checks all my boxes when it comes to what I look for in my Dragonball.

Interesting new characters.

Cool fights.

Expanded lore

Great character moments.
