Was Future Trunks a SSJ or an ASSJ when he fought Semi-Perfect Cell?

He fought Semi-Perfect Cell when ASSJ Vegeta allowed Cell to go search for #18

Wasn't Future Trunks fighting Semi-Perfect Cell filler? I can't remember it happening in the manga. Anyway, he appears to be a SSJ at first then seemingly bulks to ASSJ, but it's kinda hard to tell because the overall art-style at this point in the story had all of the characters looking roided up by default.

Since it's an anime scene, definitely Grade 2. The anime team loved Grade 2 so much they made Vegeta and Trunks use it even in instances where they were only using Grade 1 in the manga.

Within the manga, it looks like Trunks was in his regular Ssj state from when he first darted out ahead of Cell to when he tried to stop Cell once Cell noticed #18 nearby. Afterward, from when he was giving chase to Cell absorbing #18, he looked like he was in his 2nd Grade state. That being said, there was no actual battle in the manga. Trunks didn't land a single attack, as Vegeta intervened initially, and when Trunks blasted him away, Cell used a Taiyo-ken to give himself time after.

In the anime Trunks was Grade 2 even at the Cell Games, even though the manga heavily hinted that him noticing and understanding what Goku did would lead him and Vegeta to try and go in his footsteps.
