Why do characters eat senzu whole?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Why do characters eat senzu whole?

Occasionally characters are given just half a senzu and it seems just as effective, so why waste senzu like that when they could conserve them?

Just like any other food, they may simply not be able to last near as long when their insides are exposed to the air. Fruits and vegetables grow with skins or shells to intentionally protect the insides from the elements, and while those outside skins can keep the insides safe for consumption for a very long time, once the insides are exposed to air they're usually going to spoil or otherwise go bad fairly quick. So, unless they had some kind of refrigeration unit quickly available to them (I know they could have a capsule with one handy, but work with me here), they couldn't really split senzu all that often and be okay.

Granted, there are situations like after the battle with #17 and #18, as well as the battle with the Cell Jrs, where they could have halved up some senzu and likely been fine (thus saving senzu for later), but in general, if there's going to be a prolonged period of time between when someone may need a senzu again, halving one up likely wouldn't be beneficial in the long run, and they'd just waste the other half anyway.

Maybe half senzu beans don't restore you completely.

This only really applies when only a single person gets their ass kicked, and even then it could still be beneficial as there's always the possibility of recovering and jumping back into battle only to immediately get wrecked again.

Goku split a Senzu between Kuririn & Gohan. It recovered those two, as intended.

Obviously even if it did work on Gohan and Kuririn the portion and amount of Senzu is different. Look at Yajirobi who was stupid enough to eat a bag of beans where one of them is enough already.

They're quite small as it is so eating it in stages would be quite fiddly.

I think that are like medicine, meaning that, even though a smaller dose might have the same effect, the appropriate dose is still recommended because a smaller dose might not be enough depending on the case.

This means that if one senzu bean is supposed to be enough to feed you for 10 days, half a senzu might not last for so many days... and if you are injured, half a senzu might be enough to fully recover, but if the injuries are really dramatic and you are almost dead, half a senzu might not be enough to recover you fully, even though you probably would be almost 100% healed.
