To wait for English dub release or not to wait

Post by DonieZ » Fri Feb 10, 2017 5:18 pm

Hi guys

I was planning to post a thread like this a few months ago hence the phrasing of the title, but then last week I discovered that DB Super English dub had finally arrived!

Having grown up as a kid watching Dragon Ball in the early 2000's, I only ever watched the show in English and upon the announcement of Dragon Ball Super thought it would be too weird to watch it in Japanese, so decided to wait. I also wanted to watch through all of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z again beforehand so didn't mind the wait. But now there have already been, what, 70 episodes released? What do you think, shall I just enjoy this opportunity to smash through all these episodes at once even if I'm not used to Goku sounding like a little b*tch?
Or might I as well just watch in English seeing as its actually here?

And what are your views on watching DB in Japanese? What did you grow up watching it in?

By the way, the amount of spoilers I've tried and failed to avoid particularly from watching DB related stuff on YouTube. Ducking hell.

I grew up with the dub too yet watched all 70+ episodes of Super in Japanese so far. It's perfectly fine. Watch them on crunchyroll with subtitles. You'll get used to the Japanese voices quick.

I appreciate the English dub because it introduced me to the story, but in current times it is not really needed to watch Dragon Ball anymore.

Unfortunately, the English Dub is so behind I probably can't recommend you wait for it since there's spoilers on youtube and most social media sites.

If you already know the basic plots of each arc then there's no reason to wait so you should just watch it now and just rewatch whatever's out in English when you're done.

I'm so impatient that I don't even wait for the episodes to air in Japan, I read the summeries and episode titles that are released before so I'd never be able to wait that long to watch it.

I'm also one who grew up on the english version. The Japanese Voices will grow on you. You just have to be willing.

Though if you want to wait, then that's fine as well. I just see no reason to. You can always rewatch it in English. Except this time you'll know what episodes you like and don't like and you can avoid those if you wish.

Well is your opinion since Funimation is doing a good job with DBZ Kai and DBS dub but is so behind to the point is ridiculous your missing out a lot of great character moment. and the first 27 episode with the expection of some some are not my cup of tea
but I got a question how many episode of DBS you watched donieZ

I think it all comes down to your preferred voice cast.
I grew up with the dub, but nowadays I prefer sub. (Also TFS).

Well, you're posting in a community that's attached to a website whose entire mission is to spread the love and enjoyment of the original Japanese version of the franchise.

    So... well... that's my recommendation!

Honestly, I can't even fathom being "into" the series and not immediately consuming whatever's available in its original format. If I love the series so much, why on Earth would I wait? Don't I want to know and experience it as soon as I can? That's how I see it.

The original is sitting right there taunting you. Give in.

It's going to be hell waiting for the dub to catch up to the Universal Tournament Arc. If you get started on the sub now, you can skip all the chaff. No purple goo clones, food fluff, none of Zamasu's repeated monologues about evil ningens, and no half assed retellings of movies.

and even if you do watch the sub now you can always just watch the dub when you're bored or something.

    Do both.

I watch the show when it first airs in japan allowing me to see it fresh along with the rest of the community and share the experience. And with the english dub I can watch the show all over again but with the english caste (who I enjoy just as much as the japanse one) and its a refreshing.

Original version by default is my recommendation. Why would I wait for a version of the show in a language I don't care about and isn't made by the people who make the show? I don't care if it exists or not. Of course, it's your choice. You can watch whatever you want in which ever way you want.

As for my growing up story, I got into Dragon Ball pretty late in 2008 with the JSAT Special. Kikuchi Shunsuke music got me interested. Then, I watched the rest of the series in the original language for the Kikuchi score. I didn't have a problem with the original audio cause I thought the cast did an amazing job and are still amazing. So, I grew up and am still growing actually with the original version.

Here's what you should do, this is the best option to choose as of now, because right now you have the luxury of watching over 70 episodes of new DB content you haven't seen before. ( Which will continue to grow if your patient) Sometimes, I wish hadn't watched Super when I did, my experience watching it would've been a lot less utterly disappointing. Anyways to the point, I think you should watch it in English, you could watch it in Japanese, although don't expect to not cringe numerous times during episodes. The Japanese voices aren't bad, but for someone who's a regular watcher of the English Dub, the difference between the two is so jarring, coupled with the occasional voice cracks. It just breaks the immersion in some scenes. Furthermore, it's not like your going to get used to them overnight, it's going to take some time and most probably halfway into series. However, since you stated your planning on rewatching Dragon Ball, I suggest you do it Japanese to get suited to the voices. Otherwise, if I were you, I would just watch it in English. That could be just me though, since I like binge watching. This isn't some type of sacred text, you don't have to watch it in Japanese.

Step 1: Watch all of Dragon Ball in Japanese
Step 2: Watch all of Dragon Ball Z in Japanese
Step 3: By the time you start watching Dragon Ball Super in Japanese, you will have had over 400 episodes to get used to the Japanese cast
    Step 4: ???
    Step 5: Profit

In the meantime, keep watching and enjoying new dub episodes as they air.

I didn't originally grow up watching the Japanese dub obviously but I did see some snip-bits of it when I was younger and put it down (Though this was more because I'm a dub fan and I usually prefer anime dubbed instead of subbed). Later on though, I actually decided to check out certain scenes when I was getting back into the series but I couldn't find any fights that weren't over an hour (And my internet was slow back then) so I checked out some of the Japanese version which I found more interesting.

Though Goku's voice did sound unnatural for his age and stuff, I stopped minding it after a while and it feels completely normal now.

I started to watch the series in Japanese when I started to become a fan of the series when I was 10. So I never care how Goku sound like in Japanese and seeing something in Japanese from Japan as a kid was way cooler to me. Anyways, if you want to wait then that is fine. I like to watch DB in Japanese because I don't like waiting years to catch up. The dub won't reach where we are at until late 2018 at this rate.

I'm not directly a part of this group, in my opinion. My recommendation is to go watch Kai in english, then go to Super in english.

    This is a good recommendation.
I say do whatever makes you happy and most comfortable.
It's entertainment and you aren't obligated to enjoy it in any particular way or form.

You're no less of a Dragonball fan because you prefer to watch it in your native language.

I'm just waiting for dubbed, japanese isn't bad except for goku and gohan however the dub is so iconic and if u scared about it being really behind for the upcoming movie u can always switch to the manga.
