What's your opinion on the non-fighting third tier characters?
So everyone always talks about the main cast since they're fighters, as well as the main females since they play a big role in the story, but what about the non-fighting third tier characters?
Oolong
Puar
Ox King
Turtle
Bulma's parents
Mr. Popo
Dende
Korin
Maron
Gregory/Bubbles
My favorite of this bunch is Dende, who I always had a soft spot for ever since the Namek arc. I do however also really enjoy early Dragonball era Oolong when he was actually funny and had a role in the story.

They were good while they lasted and I still think more material could have been gotten out of them. Also, I thought Oolong would be a super important character at the beginning and I was kind of gobsmacked when he basically disappeared later.

All of those characters are good, the favourite being the turtle

I find it amusing how these characters keep appearing in so many episodes yet have so less to speak. Though I'm only referring to the episodes of Bulma's birthday party where it makes sense that all these characters would assemble.
I don't think much of any of these characters. Except maybe Ox-King and Oolong.

Well they were all there for the Buu saga during the tournament and on the Kami's palace before Buu killed them all, even if they were all mostly background material. Same for the Saiyan saga.DBZ Macky wrote:I find it amusing how these characters keep appearing in so many episodes yet have so less to speak. I think the difference is most of the dialogue in these eps always went to Bulma and Chi-Chi, as well as Roshi, so the other characters barely got any lines. Obviously the wives of the main characters would get the most speaking roles.

Mr Popo and Dende were really the only non-fighting third tier character I really care for because they actually contributed something of significance to the plot over the course of story.

I don't think that the third tier characters need to necessarily contribute something to the plot, but they should have memorable moments. For those of you that watch Scrubs, how many times did The Todd have something to do with the plot? Not much, but he would come in with and awesome one liner and that was enough. Oolong's shape changing ability could come in handy, but if all he did was provide comic relief and occasionally point out the stupidity of some of his friends, that would be enough. For instance, pointing out that the smart move would be to use the DB's to kill the Saiyans was a good moment. Yeah I know the DB's couldn't, but they didn't know that and Oolong was the only one to even think of that strategy.

I agree, they all have their moments. Oolong and Turtle had some good lines in the early parts of the series, Puar contributed to stuff occaisionally (cutting Goku's tail, Fangs), but Popo to me always stuck out as the best of this bunch.
Goku beats King Piccolo and it's like, okay this kid is the strongest guy on the planet now, bar none. Then he goes basically above the Earth and this genie guy just starts kicking his ass. I was so excited, it was like a whole new world had just opened up! This sort of thing would of course be repeated again and again in Z, but Popo always stood out to me because he was so mysterious and you knew that he wasn't a villain. And then the training for the 23rd WMAT is just awesome if you ask me, although the back in time stuff was a little bit weird.

What about Dr Briefs building the spaceship that Goku used to get to Namek?Lord Beerus wrote:Mr Popo and Dende were really the only non-fighting third tier character I really care for because they actually contributed something of significance to the plot over the course of story.
Also Puar is technically the first character to beat an Oozaru, one of the strongest most feared beings in the galaxy.

Dr. Brief's helped Goku get to Namek, and he also worked on the time machine and helped repair Android 16 in the Cell saga.
