I need help clearing something up.
I am having a little trouble understanding something. According to Bardock: The Father of Goku, Goku was born, to quote Fasha, "A few days ago" after the mission on Kanassa.
However, in Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan, it is stated that both Goku and Broly are born on the same day. However, the way that I interpret it, the movie eludes to the destruction of Planet Vegeta occurring later the same day.
Am I not understanding something, or do these two sources contradict each other?
Considering that the DBZ Abridged version of Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan outright suggests that Broly was born days before, I had thought that there might have been a source where they got their information other than just Bardock: The Father of Goku.
I will say that In this scenario, I am generally ignoring Dragon Ball Minus, as it just complicates things to me.

Wasn't it stated that Goku cried for days, making Broly remember him forever?cheddarsword wrote: However, in Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan, it is stated that both Goku and Broly are born on the same day. Since you referred to Selypa as "Fasha"(
), I suspected you were getting this from the English-dubbed version of the Bardock special. So I double-checked my DVD copy, and I was right. In the original, none of Bardock's crew specifically mention when li'l Kakarrot was born. It's just implied that it was very recently, possibly that same day.
That said, the English dub for the Bardock TV special is quite possibly the worst dub that Funimation has produced for any Dragon Ball product, or maybe the worst dub they've ever produced for anything, period. You should take anything you hear in it with a planet-sized hunk of salt, or better yet forgo the English version entirely and watch it in Japanese instead.

IIRC There were some truly awful lines in the Funimation-dubbed Namek arcKaboom wrote:That said, the English dub for the Bardock TV special is quite possibly the worst dub that Funimation has produced for any Dragon Ball product, or maybe the worst dub they've ever produced for anything, period. Not to imply that it would raise the quality (or lack thereof) of the rest of the original DBZ dubs, but I don't recall anything of that scale in the Bardock special's dub.

I had thought about doing that. I'll watch the first Broly movie again in japanese.Kaboom wrote:Since you referred to Selypa as "Fasha"(), I suspected you were getting this from the English-dubbed version of the Bardock special. Truly, it seems that if you want correct information, watching the Japanese version is the best option.
Re: I need help clearing something up.
Well my train of thought was that, despite being "spiced up" so often in so many dumb ways, the dub of the Z series itself at least preserved enough of their awfully-translated original Japanese scripts to convey the same rough story. But for the Bardock special, it feels like they had no translated script at all to work with, had to basically guess what the story and dialogue was, and were pushing pretty close to 0% accuracy on that front.GigaDrill wrote:Not to imply that it would raise the quality (or lack thereof) of the rest of the original DBZ dubs, but I don't recall anything of that scale in the Bardock special's dub.
I may be exaggerating things a bit in my mind, but that's the sort of difference that makes the Bardock special's dub stand out as a whole different level of bad from the rest of it. It and the Trunks special are desperately, extremely, infuriatingly in dire need of an all-new redub from Funimation.

It's sad, this turned from a nice conversation about a misconception about Goku's birth, into another cliche thread dedicated to bashing the English dub.

But the fact of the matter is, thanks to the English dub, the information I had was false. I have yet to watch the Japanese version of Broly though, so we will see.King-K9 wrote:It's sad, this turned from a nice conversation about a misconception about Goku's birth, into another cliche thread dedicated to bashing the English dub.

When the English dub is directly responsible for the poster's incorrect information, and they specifically reached out for clarity on the issue, why should we tiptoe around confirming the fact that the English dub was in fact the culprit?King-K9 wrote:It's sad, this turned from a nice conversation about a misconception about Goku's birth, into another cliche thread dedicated to bashing the English dub.
It's not about voices, or direction, or music, or anything like that. Plain ol' factual information that the script was heavily altered/fabricated and should not be relied on. That's... almost quaint, really, where that's as far as we even need to go here.

I know, but I hate how people will just bash the dub regardless of what comment section or thread its on. It could be a topic or video having nothing to do with dubs, and people will still spiral into arguments about it. Honestly, if there's one thing the Dragon fandom gets heated over besides power levels, it's Dub vs Sub.VegettoEX wrote:When the English dub is directly responsible for the poster's incorrect information, and they specifically reached out for clarity on the issue, why should we tiptoe around confirming the fact that the English dub was in fact the culprit?King-K9 wrote:It's sad, this turned from a nice conversation about a misconception about Goku's birth, into another cliche thread dedicated to bashing the English dub.

You won't find much people like that here who'd argue over little stuff like that. Mostly everyone here prefers the original version over the old FUNImation dub which suffered from many terrible dub changes. The dub for Kai is much, much more tolerable. Kai's greatest merit wouldn't be the "improved" art or the removal of filler, but the fact that we finally have an English dub that is at the very least watchable.King-K9 wrote:I know, but I hate how people will just bash the dub regardless of what comment section or thread its on. Speaking of dubs, what was wrong with the Trunks special? I'm aware of the horrible dub changes in the Bardock special but I don't recall anything about the Trunks one.
