US arc so far: Is it living up to the hype?

Post by Master Xar » Tue May 16, 2017 2:33 pm

So given where we are I'd say we're about halfway through the arc, is the arc as cool as it was expected to be to you?

It's doing right by Gohan and Krillin, so I can't dislike that. Piccolo ain't a chump either. I'm praying everyone gets a W in this arc, but i might be hoping for too much.

I want to wait until the tournament itself is about halfway through to make a judgement on it, but here's my shortlist of positives in no particular order:

-Buu's fight in the prelims was really cool. (Unfortunate he's not making the main tournament though.)

-Gohan being rescued back into the main cast was nice to see. He's not my favorite, but he was treated poorly for a good long while so seeing that rectified was good. (Now if only they'd stop being unnecessarily mean to Yamcha.)

-So far I'm liking what little I've seen of Caulifla.

-Krillin and 18 together have been wonderful this arc. Kind of odd how Krillin got two near-consecutive stories about similar issues, but I chock that up to behind the scenes stuff.
On hiatus.

No, it doesn't even feel like it's started to me. But that's fine. I care more about endings than beginnings, and it's still been entertaining enough.

I don't know anymore, all these arbitrary jumps in power are kinda putting me off. On top of these build-up episodes to the tournament being poorly written, the whole tournament recruitment mini-arc has very been up and down so far.

The actual tournament didn't start yet, so how do we know? So far that build up is good.

The best thing they have done so far is the Pilaf Gang screen time being reduced to the point they are just background characters, I cant believe they got a lot of focus in the first half of the Trunks Arc, they couldve used that time to make Kaioshin as relevant as his manga counterpart for example.

The only bad episodes the arc had were the Alien poachers episode and the Yurin one, the rest were handled very well.

Yes. I think weve had some interesting things to talk about since the arc has began and the episodes have had some fun fights.

Of course my main expectations for the arc are mainly about the tournament itself so my answer could change.

Hard to say as the tournament itself will make or break the arc. These in between episodes have been fairly decent although they've started to drag so thankfully we've almost reached the end. If the tournament is well choreographed and animated it will be a huge payoff for the last couple episodes.

The pacing would have been better with two or even three less episodes recruiting, but think it has been doing a good job building up to the tournament.

It's already by far the best Tournament arc of this franchise, now I want to see how the Tournament itself compares to the other ones.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

It doesn't hold a candle to any of the Budoukais in terms of structuring and pacing. The climax is what's going to decide whether it will be good or another U6.

Episode #84 and #86 aside, I haven't found a single build-up episode worth giving a damn. I even skipped some. #84 and #86 suffer from similar structural and pacing issues, but the execution and the craft of those two managed to overshadow the mentioned issues. Thanks to the good staff involved.

But, then I was never super hyped for this story arc. Another tournament felt a little too quick and Hatano leaving pretty much killed any optimism I had. Still, I have a little bit of hope that Nagamine will provide us an entertaining climactic fight at the very least.

Oh I don't know, maybe when the arc actually starts what they are hyping then it might

Hype stuff has not even started yet. We are in build up phase right now. So far it's alright.

They are doing good but I wanted the power levels to be closer together. The emphasis on skill and teamwork is the best part.

Currently the arc has been ok, mostly due to some episodes that were more than entertaining (like the prematch fights, Kuririn and A17 recruitment episodes). The actual tournament itself will decide if the arc lives up to the hype it's building.
Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.

If the actual tournament delivers something spectacular, then yes, it will have lived up to the hype. All the build up won't matter if the main attraction itself of this arc, being the actual tournament, doesn't deliver.

So far it does in more ways than it doesn't but seeing how low Super standards have been, I'm not sure this is a huge compliment. We'll see how it progresses. If it's a giant nothinburger that ends soon after starightforward torunament than yeah, keep that

I'm sure the expectations are high, they worst fight has to be at least like Goku vs Hit.

The animators should know strong storyboards can straight up carry average animation.

It's pretty good so far. Aside from an episode or two, they've all been entertaining. Especially the ones that involve Gohan, the one with Krillin being my 2nd favorite next to Gohan getting his mojo back. ( Episode 88 not 90, though 90 was good as well.)
