Goku's speech to Freeza
Does anyone know how this quote from the dub,
"I am the hope of the universe. I am the answer to all living things that cry out for peace. I am the protecter of the innocent. I am the light in the darkness. I am truth. ALLY TO GOOD! NIGHTMARE TO YOU"
is said in the original? Speeches like this usually seem cooler in the original.

I didn't really mind his little speech in the dub either, except then they take it way too far, and afterwards everytime he runs into a major villian they invent a new little speech for him, which becomes really corny after awhile.[/i]Ryu wrote:I quite like both versions really, even though the dub version is a bit corny.
Is it just me or did they try to make Goku bit like one of those old style American comic book hero's? I suppose an example could be when Goku jump in between Ginyu and Vegeta so he could have his own body back. The dub gave a different reason why he jumped inbetween.
I wonder what he actually said there?
Now that you mention it, they do invent a little speech for him for every villian. That reminds me of the speech Goku said to Cell. It was something like "You're not the only one who tried to rule the earth (or Universe?) with the Sword of Injustice...." (He said it when he wanted to get a good look of what Perfect Cell looks like)everytime he runs into a major villian they invent a new little speech for him, which becomes really corny after awhile

IMO that is much wors than the dub. This is one of those times I think the dub was better than the original. Of course, I do tend to think that a lot latelyRyu wrote:Well if you mean the comic then I think this is the quote:
"I'm a saiyan sent from earth to defeat you. The legendary warrior, with a pure heart awakened by rage. SON GOKU... THE SUPER SAIYAN!!!!!"
I quite like both versions really, even though the dub version is a bit corny.

<Xyex> Original Freeza never sounded like a chick to me.
<Kaboom> Neither does Rita
<Xyex> Good point.

I just saw that episode awhile ago, pretty much everything he said in the dub there was inserted where their was supposed to be dramatic silence. After staring for awhile Goku says "So is this your perfect form?" and Cell has a bunch of flash backs about turning perfect, then smiles as he replies "Yes."Ryu wrote: Now that you mention it, they do invent a little speech for him for every villian. I honestly didn't mind the Freeza speech, although I'd have dropped "I am truth", because it really doesn't mean anything at all in that context.
And to give the man credit, Schemmel did deliver it quite well. "Ally to good, nightmare to you" could have sounded really, really awful, but he actually pulled it off.
His speech making isn't too bad. Although it does often show him being a bit more articulate than he probably should be. Still, in the area of "dubbed speaches", they could be doing a lot worse. "ALLY TO GOOD! NIGHTMARE TO EVIL! And that means you."

It's a pretty tricky line, that's just screams "cheese potential".PsyLiam wrote:And to give the man credit, Schemmel did deliver it quite well. "Ally to good, nightmare to you" could have sounded really, really awful, but he actually pulled it off.
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

*Shudders* Thank you very much for reminding me of dub Sailor Moon. Now I need to watch my fansubs and DVDs..PsyLiam wrote:I honestly didn't mind the Freeza speech, although I'd have dropped "I am truth", because it really doesn't mean anything at all in that context.

Oh definatly, Sean is a great voice actor and performed his lines really well, it's just the 're-visioning' writers who should be ashamed.PsyLiam wrote:His speech making isn't too bad. Well, I wouldn't go with "great". Although I've only ever heard him do Goku and Nail, so it's not a fair judge of his character. I do wonder if it's him or the voice director's who made Goku sound more "superhuman" as time went on?
Hmm, if this place did polls I'd be tempted to do one for all of adult Goku's English VAs, just to see who'd win. Although I'd have to disqualify Ian Chorlett, obviously.

Exactly.
So it'd be between Peter Kelamis, Kirby Morrow, Sean Schemmel, and...whoever the hell that is doing the BW GT dub (IMDB has nothing, although they do at least tell us that Chibi Goku is voiced by Zoe Slusar).
Y'know, I am actually tempted to go for Schemmel. Providing he's not overdoing the "superheroic voice".

While I think the dub's speech is probably better sounding from an artistic sense, it somewhat loses the meaning of the SSJ transformation, and is very out of character for Gokuu. Sure, he's a 100% good guy, but he's not a geek (for lack of a better term). He's not at all like the cheesy one-dimensional heroes you see in old comics or cartoons. That's Great Saiyaman.
After a very long and frustrating battle, Freeza finally pissed Gokuu off to no end by killing his best friend. An incredible anger lead to his transformation, and that's really all there was to it. His dub speech may have been a bit more dramatic or "better writing", but the original speech defined the situation as it was in a simple manner, and was very in character, to boot.
I do think Schemmel delivered it pretty well, though. I always liked hearing the "ALLY TO GOOD, NIGHTMARE TO YOU" part in the old Toonami opening.

Have you never heard his Kaiou? I think that one resulted in many a fanboy heart attack.PsyLiam wrote:Well, I wouldn't go with "great". Although I've only ever heard him do Goku and Nail, so it's not a fair judge of his character.

I keep forgetting he does Kaiou. Possibly deliberatly.
Some of the blame there should go with Dave Ward for coming up with the voice, although Schemmel adding a lisp certainly didn't help.
It's remarkable that Blue Water put minimal effort into finding Vegeta's and Piccolo's that sound like Drummond and McNeil (or even Sabat), but they managed to get a King Kai just like the original. That's where my priorities would lie, too.

What are you talking about?! He's the very model of the idiotic dogooder. Making him one-dimensional. At BEST he'd be two-dimensional (using the "evolution of Goku's intelligence" thingy in daizenshuu 7), but there's no way he's a round character with emotional and psychological growth like Tenshinhan, Piccolo, Vegeta and even Gohan. He stays as is throughout all 42 volumes of the manga. He's not at all like the cheesy one-dimensional heroes you see in old comics or cartoons.
