So all this time, the low video quality of the Funimation dub wasn't my imagination?

One thing I always noticed but always just thought was my imagination (for reasons I'll explain below) was that once Funimation made the dub in-house starting with Season 3, the actual video quality took a big hit. With the Saban-Funimation dub, the video quality seemed really high and the colors were all nice and vibrant. Then Season 3 hit, and the show looked....old, very old, like the video footage just took a big hit in quality. I always thought that was just my eyes playing tricks because of the big change in music. The new Falcouner soundtrack sounded very much like it came from an 1980's show (like Transformers or something) and since the music sounded older than the Saban soundtrack, it just automatically made everything else look older too.

Now I'm reading that that WASN'T the case? That for Season 3 and 4, the video quality really was shit because they used old Mexican dub footage or something along those lines?

I remember the Saban episodes looked pretty grainy back in the day.

Around the time Season 3 first aired on Cartoon Network, a local Telemundo affiliate was airing the Mexican dub in my area. Funimation's video looked slightly better, as there were less dirt and scratches compared to the prints Telemundo was airing.

I think you'll want to clarify if the actual video masters used to produce the show were additional multi-generational masters acquired through the Mexican sub-licensee (as opposed to masters received directly from Toei themselves)...

... versus using the Mexican dub to translate and adapt scripts for their English dub.

The latter? Certainly true; Sabat has talked about this quite a few times. The former? That part's fuzzy.
