FUNi & Dragonbox footage: A reason to get excited?
Oh, no! Not another half-assed rumor/speculation/assertation about whether or not the forthcoming season box sets will include the recent Dragonbox masters!
Actually, it isn't. The thing of it is, I've done some pondering about what is possibly the most anticipated question regarding DBZ since everybody sat around waiting for a season 3 . . . and what if we actually do get these masters?
Technically, there's no way to know if FUNi has even approached Toei concerning the matter, let alone say that they have or haven't secured the rights . . . and as much as I can hope and dream for the most unlikely of outcomes (and believe me, I will), my personal vote is that either Toei would be unwilling to let them go or that they would ask too high a price for FUNi to be interested.
But hey! Let's all-of-a-sudden pretend that they actually did secure the rights; that an announcement was made, and our dreams have come true. FUNimation is sticking this gorgeous remastered footage into its new releases, and eventually we'll have all of DBZ packed into convenient boxed sets looking as good as it ever possibly can.
That's where I started thinking of another possibility. Would/Could FUNimation try to "remaster" the remastered footage?
We've seen them try their hand at remastering before with the "Ultimate" releases, which suggests that there would be nothing legal-wise preventing them from doing so again. But there'd be absolutely no reason that they should this time. Absolutely nothing they could do would be able to improve on this enhanced version; in fact, they could just end up spoiling it somehow.
But I don't know anything about copyrights and such, and so arrives another question: If they wanted, could Toei restrict FUNi from fooling around with this new footage in a domestic release? Is that possible, too?
I'm admitting my own ignorance here in order to fuel conversation. Does anyone have any thoughts about this?

I have no clue. But somehow I could see them doing silly things like adjusting the brightness levels or the sharpness of the picture for no apparent reason other than to say that they did in fact "remaster" it, or rather that they had a hand in contributing to make the Japanese picture what it is as we see it in our American DVD players.

Just in regards to their previous "re-mastered" additions, I suppose they might saturate the color more. Just to make it a little dark. There have been people on the forums that thought it was to "flushed" looking.

There is no better combination in the world than Dragonball, Cherry Pepsi, and Cheez-Its. It's a proven fact.

...me, in disguise. Really.
Anyway, DragonBoxes/Footage therefrom? That'd be nice. Hopefully, FUNimation wouldn't find reason to mess with them too much.

I would think if they had to pay all this money, to Toei for permission and for the actual footage to sell, plus making all the new packaging, advertising, they won't have the time to bother re-editing every single episode, and they way I see it, is why remaster already remastered footage? It's another job on top of all the other stuff, and time is money. The way Funi see it is Toei have done the hard work by remastering it all, why meddle further and create more work?
What they could do, as someone has said, is just change the brightness to get it close to how it looks on their DVD's, the sudden change in lighter colour may not be preffered by some, even people here don't like it much, I myself like the lighter tone, it's more similar to the manga and it's a lot better to see the skin colour pink like real life. Since just changing the brightness slightly won't make any grain re-appear, there is no harm in doing it.
So what I think they will do is sell it how it originally is, with a slogan letting us know it's in orignal format and the highest quality, with possible pictures from their previous DVD's to compare, and probably with footage not yet released, like the Play-Dia movie, Japanese commercials, and I don't know, maybe free stuff like models or toys to come with it, or a book, something to make people want to spend money on it.

Hey you said it wouldn't be half assed!
Just kidding. Well, I would like to see it, (anything out of Toei's mits is OK with me) but I really doubt it could be done, look what's been done already, remastered footage cannot be more remastered, and if it is I'll be very surprised. In that case: BRING IT ON!!!

Why do people care if they get the Dragonbox footage? Its not that much of an improvement over what we have. Not enough to justify delaying season one for nearly six months.

Because we (read I) want the best picture quality possible. It is an improvement (go look at the "Features" page), the picture is sharper, better colors, it is a big improvement, in my opinion. I'll happily wait another year if it means I'll be getting that footage (plus I don't have the money at the moment!).Victator Supreme wrote:Why do people care if they get the Dragonbox footage.
