Wang Tang

Post by Rory » Thu Oct 12, 2006 7:58 am

Has anybody here played either of the Power Stone games?
I recently dug out my Dreamcast out of the cupboard, and remembered theres a character in it called Wang Tang. He's is the greatest... either homage, or rip off, of a Super Saiya-Jin, mainly Goku.

The first thing he says is " Ossu! Ora Wang Tang! ". Now, on its own, maybe thats not so bad, but when combined with everything else.. well, you'll see.

This is Wang Tang, in his base form:

And when he collects three Power Stones... this is Wang Tang in his... 'Super' form:
http://cvtw.batcave.net/images/capcom164a.jpg

When transformed, Wang Tang is much faster, more powerful, ok ok, thats alright.. but when he starts firing off KI blasts, again you seem to think " Hmm, how unoriginal. "

But wait! Its not finished yet! Him ultimate attack is... wait for it...
The Genki-Dama. Yes, Wang Tang puts his hands into the air and a huge ball is created above him. He then throws the ball at his opponent, until you see it, you won't belive they actually got away with this.
Ok, its not actually CALLED that.. its even worse, the Genki Dama rip off is actually called the Dragon Ball(Sometimes refered to as Dairyuudama for some reason.).

There's been many Goku/Saiya-Jin rip offs before, even good'ol Sonic's done it many times, but do you think this just went too far?

*sigh* There is a world of difference between a tribute and a rip-off. I thought Wang Tang (and Super Sonic) was a fun walking, talking DB reference, so I don't think there's any need to get in a "OMG CAPCOM RIPOFF" hissy fit.

Or should I also point out Sonson in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 where she turns into a giant rampant ki-blast breathing ape? <.<;; Oozaru if you wish.

Face it, Capcom loves Dragonball and they happily flaunt that fact.

Yeah but you gotta draw the line somewhere! XD
Its like say, uhhh, they loved Sonic too, so they made a blue superfast hedgehog character.
I'm sure there'd be trouble for Cappie there.

EDIT: And I wasn't in a fit, I was just saying I think they took it a little too far.

Also, if you notice, Wang Tang's transformed uniform looks suspicously like Goku's Yardrat uniform.

I think it's more of a tribute than a rip-off. Having an attack named "Dragon Ball" that looks like the Genki-Dama is acutally really neat in my opinion.

May as well make this thread into something.
What other Dragonball inspired characters can you think of?
Except for Wang Tang, Sonic, and Goemon?

Well did Wang Tang openly pay homage to DragonBall? I know that the Sonic series does.

You can call me Rick because I'm not actually Piccolo.
I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

If you look at it close, you'll see that that IS Goku's SSJ hair.

Anyway, did they take it too far? If it had about half of the things it does I'd've said so. :P

As for Capcom liking DB... well, that's pretty clear. But have you ever thought of them as Tekken fans? (Ryu & Evil Ryu = Jin & Devil Jin )

Think about it. Lone, young warriors, with somewhat-friendly rivals (Ken for Ryu, Hwoarang for Jin). Very seclusive. Connections, y'see?

... Wait, Street Fighter came first, right? :x

Well, I don't know if any of you have ever played the game: Bloody Roar 3 (or 4) for the PS2. (awesome game BTW I highly reccomend picking it up)

But there is a character in it named Shenlong, and his special attack is a very Kamehameha-like Ki move.

I dunno if this is on perpose, or as a tribute, or just a coincidence.

I'll see if i can get a screen shot or something.

There is no better combination in the world than Dragonball, Cherry Pepsi, and Cheez-Its. It's a proven fact.

"Super Saiyan" was the first thing that I thought of when I first played Power Stone and saw Want Tang transform. He can do the Genki Dama too! :P

I love that game. It's the first Dreamcast game I ever played. It kinda makes me wish we saw a Dragon Ball game for the Dreamcast, something similar to Power Stone. You know it would be awesome.

Yes, you are correct, I did mean Bloody Roar.

Foolish typo on my part. I fixed that up right away though.

I wanted to find a screenshot of him doing the kamehameha-esque technique, still looking though..

Same here, though I always called it Death Ball  . Whenever Wang Tang transforms I always say "The Super Saiyan".

There is a secret-agent, James Bond like game out for the SFC in Japan where the main chracter changes into a SSJ if his rage meter is full. He can also use a dragon attack in which a shenronlike dragon rushes across the screen. Can't remember the title but it plays like final fight.
Jord doesn't have a avatar because the combination of Jord and a equally cool avatar would cause the universe to implode.

I love Power Stone and I totally didn't see Wang tang as a rip-off because well, they weren't being at all subtle. Definitely a tribute, with Capcom flair. The whole game actually has that adventurous feel of early dragonball, y'know, searching for wish granting treasure, and in Wang Tang's case meerly seeking to improve his skills through fighting more powerful oponents. I find it charming.

That one Wang dude is kind of like some kind of effimenate man and not at all like a strong fighter should look. Maybe it's the ponytail that makes him look like that. I mean, it's one thing to be an asassin like Taopaipai and have one and another to not be that threatening.

Whacha mean? He looks every bit like an innocent young martial artist. Also sort of like Goku, only with less bulging muscles.
