Eric Legrand (French Vegeta) Makes A Prank Call--In Character

Post by TheBlackPaladin » Sat Apr 13, 2019 10:24 pm

I could see this thread getting locked, in which case, I apologize in advance and won't take the slightest offense. That said, I felt it was Dragon Ball-related enough to give it a shot. So, in cruising around YouTube, I found this clip of Eric Legrand, the voice actor for Vegeta in the French dub, being interviewed on a radio show. In it, he makes a prank call, in character, as Vegeta.

I'll be the first to admit, I don't speak a ton of French, so I wasn't able to make out a lot of what he was saying. That said, Vegeta's intensity and anger were very much detectable, and I started cracking up around the 0:32 mark. Does anybody with a decent command of the French language have a better idea of what he's saying?

Basically:

- The pranked one complains that they were sleeping, so Vegeta tells him that he can just go back to sleep afterwards instead of uselessly whining about it.

- The pranked one uses vulgar words, so Vegeta tells him to watch his language. However, pretty quickly, with the pranked one who keeps saying the bad word "putain" (which could be equivalent to the F word in English), Vegeta goes something like: "Right, just do what you want, F*** yeah, F***, F***, is that all you can say, F***ing F***?!"

- The pranked one threatens that he'll come for him, to which Vegeta gleefully replies "oh yeah, be my guest, come on then! MWA HA HA!!"

- The pranked one complains that it's 11pm, so Vegeta, just after his laugh, says "oh, you're one of those guys who faint when it's past 11?" (in French, he uses the expression "se coucher avec les poules" - "to go to sleep along with the chickens", which means to go to sleep pretty early).

- The pranked one is asking what's this mess, what it's all about, to which Vegeta replies: "Yeah, what's this mess all about?! Who could that be?! WHO COULD THAT BE?! You don't know even know who I am, you worthless worm?!" and the pranked one hangs up.

- For the second call, the radio guys says he's probably their age, he's gotta know who Vegeta is, so he tells Eric to tell him that he's Vegeta. So this is the first thing that Eric starts saying: "Mwa ha ha ha... I'm the prince of warriors, I'm Vegeta." and the pranked one knows who it is, "I know who it is but you can't be that dumb" (as in stupid enough to think that I would believe it or stupid enough to think that you are this character).

- The pranked one says "so what, you're an impersonator and you need to make the whole world know about it?", which makes the radio team laugh that the official voice actor is called an impersonator.

- Eric confirms again that the guy's live with Vegeta, but the pranked one says "you really think you are that cartoon - what's it's called, it's, it's - Dragon Ball or something?".

- Vegeta replies that he knows it's Dragon Ball, the thing he thinks about even in his sleep, and from morning to dusk, and that he needed to phone him to tell him that because he knew he would just love that.

- The guy says he doesn't give a crap about it and Vegeta tells him "oh please, spare me the details about your crap" (in French, it's an expression roughly translating at "it makes me beat my balls" - which means not caring about something - with Vegeta replying he doesn't want to hear anything about his balls). Then the guy hangs up.

- After that, Eric feels a little bad about waking up a guy who might get up at 4am for work for all they know, to which the radio team is amused that Vegeta shows a sweet side, to which Eric replies "well yeah, I'm not as mean as it seems."

If we could only get Chris Sabat to do this in English...The guy who does Vegeta's TFS voice would also work.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

Unfortunately, prank calls on radio shows became illegal in the U.S. at some point (I'm not sure when). Radio shows still continued to make "prank" calls after that, but they're all fake, as they basically have to call the other person ahead of time and ask both for their permission and for them to act surprised. Pretty lame. I don't know if France has similar laws.

I know quite some time has passed but since it was revealed a few days ago I think it's worth mentioning in memory of this man that he was forced to do that prank.
