Am I the only person angry about this?

Post by djkalteraphine » Mon Nov 27, 2006 7:05 pm

If you're here on this forum, then I'm safe to assume you all know about the "Dragon Ball Z Season Boxed Sets", with "remastered footage" from the "Original TV Masters". And I'm sure you've all seen this comparison thread on FUNi's forum; http://community.funimation.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=13370
I've scanned the discussions, the theories, and all the speculation. There and in this thread, http://db.schuby.org/daizex/viewtopic.php?t=4405 , and yeah. This stuff is all good and fine. 20% of the picture missing. 10% new stuff to the left and right. Uh huh. Right.

Image

Full screen, wide screen, does it really matter that much? Either way, we're still getting the important parts of the picture. So cool yourselves. That isn't the reason to be angry about it.

Image
This picture, originally posted by Gokuden553, is why I'M mad. Look at how friggin' gorgeous it is! The colors are alive and brilliant. Do you see any noise? 'Cause I don't. I feel like I'm the only person who has noticed this. Why would FUNi go through so much trouble to re-remaster their original masters, when they look terrible and will always look terrible?! It doesn't make an sense! WHO is making the decisions over there?! ARE THEY ALL BATSHIT INSANE?!

Check it out; Buy the Dragon Boxes. Rip the DVDs. Put Dragon Boxes on new DVDs with a subtitle track and dub track. Burn it a couple thousand times. Why is that so hard, FUNi? I feel like I'm goin' crazy. What kills me about this is that the work is already done. You can buy the Dragon Box R2s off of Amazon.co.jp, so it isn't like Toei not "suppling the footage" is a valid excuse. I am honestly at the point now where I'm just going to buy the Dragon Box, AND the FUNi releases, and slap the sub/dub track onto it myself.

I shouldn't have this high of blood pressure over DB. It's ridiculous.

Cheers.

Many of the members are concerned about this as well. I really hope FUNi isn't serious about this crap. I say it won't happen, that's like getting away with murder...:| Kula is writing a letter about this. PM her and fight the good fight.

I honestly don't give a crap about the widescreen either way. The fact that they've done so much else (cleaned up footage, japanese bgm) is far more prominent in my mind than this.

I'm going to wait. I need to see actual footage before I plop my $40 down. If there's nothing spectacular, it goes on the Netflix queue

Okay...

I'd rather have it fullscreen like it's supposed to be.

But if they wanted to give more picture, couldn't they just zoom out instead of cropping? Or just not take off the stuff on top and bottom so it isn't as wide? Is that even technically feasable?

Whatever. I just hope it works out for the best. If these boxsets end up fullscreen, it'd be grand.

I pretty much agree with every word you said in your original post, OP. That is also why I now have 3 Dragon Box sets and will be hunting down the last two.

Still, I'd like to reserve judgment on this new Funi set for when it comes out or more is revealed about it.

I think common sense about who/what we're dealing with here will ultimately lead to the conclusion that the Dragon Box sets will always be better overall - but I don't know for sure that these new sets are useless just yet.

Things definitely don't look good though. Video compression problems due to episode per disc ratio, mishandled widescreen, and poor audio mixing seem like they will be the order of the day. But no one can be positive of that yet - the final release/comparisons will be interesting to say the least.

Oh sorry, I'm not sure why Funimation releaced a preview of that image which only showed half of Gohans face and a background... for those who are curious about the full frame here's one after the camera pans over to the rest of Gohan.

Image

I've got no idea why Funimation wants you to think that Gohan wears a black shirt under his red shirt, it's clearly blue in the Budokai/Tenkaichi games isn't it?

Which is typically what happens on such shots. If something is leading off the edge of a given shot, typically the shot pans to show it in full. Rescanning the films to capture what was cut out by the NTSC safezone, which is marginal detail not meant to really contribute to the shot anyhow, only to eliminate that which was framed to be in the shot is pretty damned stupid. That's my final decision.

It's only made worse by FUNi's latest project announcement:

Until now. This is our story. These are our heroes.
LOL...Isn't this the quote on the Dragonbox bootlegs?!
It's on Volumes 1&2 of DragonBox Z, the bootlegs probably took it from there if they have it also.

Uhm... oy. I usually don't have many complaints against FUNi, but that ad made even me cringe. That "reverse widescreen"... is a really, REALLY cheesy way of putting it. >___<

I think it'd be kinda funny, though, if they kept to that term literally and put only the cut-off parts on the DVDs just like that. That would make a great practical joke!

Rabid fan (watching the new box set he's just blown fifty bucks on): HEY! WHERE'S THE CREAMY CENTER?! D:<

Out of curiosity, I spliced the image MajinVejitaXV posted to see if the Dragonbox image matched up with the cut-off ends:

Image

... There's that zooming-in problem again. It fits like a foot in an over-sized shoe... ouchies. >___o;

I was aiming for a 'G' rating, otherwise I would have called it 'Batshitloco-vision' ;p

Danke, just a quick Photoshop out of boredom. Yay 5 minutes of effort.

Downsized screenshots in JPG wont always weild the greatest result so you can't exactly rely on them for quality.

On top of that, FUNimation aren't working from their old masters because otherwise, this wouldn't be possible, because in all of the previous DVD releases, the footage that was shown is all they had.

Check it out; Buy the Dragon Boxes. Rip the DVDs. Put Dragon Boxes on new DVDs with a subtitle track and dub track. Burn it a couple thousand times. Why is that so hard, FUNi? Except that by taking the Dragonboxes, putting a dub and sub on them and repackaging them, without Toei's direct say so is illegal and in violation of probable standing contracts. If they were able to do it that simply, they would have, but the fact of the matter is that they aren't, and I doubt there is any reputable DVD company/distributor that would ever do that (because generally it is forbidden).

So this is why this isn't happening.

Wearn't the Funimations Cell Game saga disks in Dragon Box quality to begin with, I remember them being the closest to Dragon Box quality as possible.

If anyone had some screen caps you'd see what I mean.

To quote Pedro from Excel Saga: "VERY NO!"

I saw caps of the last episode of the Cell Games (Gohan and Cell's Kamehameha struggle), and it looked like ass. Grain all over, lots of macroblocking, etc. Typical FUNi DBZ release.
