If renji = range then logically Jiren should turn into Geran, right? And isn't using Jiren the equivalent of using Tāresu, or Torankusu?

"Geran" is indeed a faithful spelling that reinforces the name pun. A few people do actually use it (mostly thinking of TDC here).

We ultimately didn't go with it here at Kanzenshuu both out of inertia with the simulcast subtitles, but also because we felt that the beginning "G" didn't inherently imply a correction pronunciation, which might lead people to use a hard "G" sound instead when reading it in text (similar to Giran's name, which it also would have been extremely similar to in spelling).

It's a magical balancing act trying to find a transliterated spelling that accomplishes BOTH the intended pronunciation as well as the name pun source, and ジレン ultimately just didn't give us an easy "out" here.

(That's why we love "Tullece", because it accomplishes everything at once. You are right to offer that up as a contrasting example, though.)

Personally I decided a while ago to call the DB Movie 1 villain straight-up Gourmet, because Gurumes, for me at leas, doesn't even vaguely imply the name pun!

This is also the stated reason the Danish translators went with the "Vejita" spelling over "Vegeta" - had they spelled it Vegeta, everyone would have assumed it was pronounced "Veh-geh-tah". Name spellings can be a bit tricky to choose at times, especially if you're working with text only.
