Dragon Ball Z Arabic dub thread

Post by FPSSJ4_Goku » Wed Dec 09, 2020 12:59 pm

This thread is for discussing any memories or things you know about the Arabic dub, along with Spacetoon and Venus Centre's antics with the DBZ franchise (trust me, there are scenes where Kuririn and Gokū are referred to as Hoshi and Gogo, as an example. IDK how Spacetoon let script changes like this get past quality control. Or was there any?)

Is there any other anime dubbing company in Arab territory? I think Glitter Force Doki Doki has been licensed by a company that is NOT Venus Spacetoon. Sure its still censored to death, but its another company.

I'm actually not sure. SPaceToon and MBT 3 are the most well-known channels. If you're talking about other dubbing companies, then IDK man. You'll have to talk to people who live or come from any of the following countries:

Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine parts of Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the UAEs and Yemen

The Arabic dub of Future Boy Conan was produced by a company located in Qatar.

I never could find an answer on this, but was the Arabic Kai dub any better than previous efforts? I know that dub got farther in the story than the Z dub did, actually finishing on the end of Freeza. I suppose I should also ask if the Super dub was (is?) any good.

I heard that Shen Long's appearance in the Saiyan saga was cut in Z but retained in Kai. Aside from that and ending at a slightly later point than the Z dub... not that much of an improvement. The dragons were retained in the Namek/Freeza saga in both dubs AFAIK.

The funniest censorship of the Arabic dubs to me by far has to be the heavy editing around the Oozaru transformation scenes in order to fabricate the change of them being "summoned" and those speak for themselves. It was apparently done due to some belief that it suggested Darwin's theory of evolution which is/was considered offensive and sacreligious in Arabic countries.
DB collection related goals as of now:

1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)

2.) Collect rest of manga

3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

Yeah, I imagine that is because of how strictly monotheistic Muslims are. They also believe God is all good and encourage people to honour and praise him, far more than say, Christians do so I can't imagine any suggestions about there being another God who is known for "destruction" would have flown.

Yeah, that is why any and all Oozaru scenes were revised to make it look like human-like characters such as saiyans. Muslim is about 600 years younger than Christianity and hasn't had a reformation so they are much more conservative and outright dismissive of any ideas that question the narrative of their holy books.

Yeah, that is why any and all Oozaru scenes were revised to make it look like human-like characters such as saiyans. [islam] [sic] is about 600 years younger than Christianity and hasn't had a reformation so they are much more conservative and outright dismissive of any ideas that question the narrative of their holy books.
while the first bolded part is true, the last part isn't exactly accurate.
assuming by reformation that you mean the protestant movement rebelling against the catholic church due to corruption. ahhhh, it's not exactly translatable cuz that system didn't exist in islam. closest thing u'll get is shia splitting from sunni but that was due to political/idealogical reasons rather than religious one unlike the protestant/catholic split. shia are also more politically religious than sunnis in iran.

and just cuz protestants split from the catholic church, it doesn't mean they were suddenly not as conservative as catholics, it still look centuries later till now for protestants to get that status of being more lax with the christian religion compared to catholics. and even so, not all catholics are that religious nowadays either. for example, northern ireland troubles is not a prominent problem like it used to be due to how religiously laxed people are nowadays compared to decades ago.

that said, islam did go through ''updates'' (i gotta be very delicate on how i word it since a reform is supposedly haram in conventional islam) that made it more laxed like christianity nowadays in europe, but it's gonna depend on which region is being talked about and brought up. lots just generalzie tho and equate morocco or tunisia to the likes of the taliban or afghanistan for example, lol. talk about never traveling lol

the maghreb region (morocco, algeria, tunisia) is quite laxed, they are of the sunni maliki denomination and are semi secular in their approach. they've chose to forego hadith elements that are incompatible with the modern age in favor of secular laws to modernize themselves as possible

they've also weeded out salafi-wahabi influence from their countries in recent years and stopped importing imams from SA due to this.

now when you talk about places like saudi arabia or pakistan, ohhhhhhhhh boi (or even afghanistan/taliban). that's where it's still most conservative as it goes, alt conservative even. their denominations & regional islamic code are as stuck in the past as it goes.

and the reason why dragon ball dub is extremely weird like that is cuz it's still mostly based on a script from 2002? where the middle east as a whole is wholly different from how it is nowadays AND because the channel block it aired on was primarily for little kids, not even teens like in spacepower where they aired gintama, bleach, peace maker, monte cristo anime, inuyasha, bazilik, and many others.

Apologies for the necroposting, but here are some of the worst and horrible changes the dubs have made:
  • Raditz is rewritten from Goku's evil brother to his evil friend. I think the reason for this change is that fratricide is prohibited in Arabic countries.
  • The Saiyans, except Goku and Gohan(?), are rewritten to be artificial. Saiyan tails are also rewritten to be artificial as well.
  • Every member of Goku's family is a brilliant scientist. It looks like they've pulled a FUNimation here!
  • In the Arabic dubs, if a character dies but is seen again, they're not considered dead; however, if a character dies and never shows up again, they are dead.
  • The Other World isn't called the Afterlife in the Arabic dubs. It is instead called the Galactic Martial Arts School.
  • King Yama is rewritten to be the headmaster of the Galactic Martial Arts School.
  • Princess Snake is rewritten from the goddess of Snake Road to an instructor who gets orders from King Yama to test Goku if he gets to her place.
  • Kami is rewritten from Earth's God to Piccolo's grandfather.
  • Instead of Kaio-sama asking Goku to tell jokes, he... gives him a math test?!
  • Saiyans don't transform into Oozarus, they instead summon them. I know this is already been mentioned here.
  • Shenron is completely removed in the Arabic dubs. The Dragon Balls themselves don't grant wishes or have a dragon summoned in those dubs. In OG DB, the Dragon Balls are rewritten into items in which you collect all 7 of them and then sell them for high prices and become rich. In DBZ, however, the Dragon Balls are rewritten into items that emit a high amount of energy so they can heal or bring back someone from the Galactic Martial Arts School to Earth once all 7 are collected.
There may be more changes, but that's all I could find. I find most of them to be dumb, dumber than FUNimation's changes. There are some changes that have been reverted in the Arabic dubs of Kai and Super, but not all of them.

The company that dubs DB into Arabic is Venus Centre/Markaz Al-Zuhra (مركز الزهرة), based in Free Zone, Damascus, Syria.

That was for original Dragon Ball and the first part of Z.

Shenron and Porunga were present in the Arabic dubs of Kai and Super.

Worst thing about the Arabic dub is not the story changes, its the edits with scenes being recut, rearranged, etc. Anyone I know whose ever tried to sync it has find the job to be a nightmare.
