Reanimating scenes from the original Dragon Ball

Post by MasenkoHA » Fri Jan 15, 2021 10:05 pm

Did anyone else find this distracting? They used the remastered Kai footage for Z but just reanimated flashbacks from the original Dragon Ball. And like it was really weird for scenes from way earlier in the timeline to look newer than the more recent Z stuff. Would it have been that hard to reframe Dragon Ball as 16:9 when needed for flashbacks?

I'd imagine it has more to do with the fact that they don't have the first anime scanned in HD like they do with Z in the form of Kai than any issues with reframing the footage.

Zero context, zero setup. Its in NO way meant to be seen as a "beginning point" for ANYTHING other than the next story arc. It flows precisely and fluidly from where things left off in the aftermath of the 23rd Budokai and mostly hits the ground running from there without really stopping to look back. You're plopping someone into the middle of a book starting at chapter 195 out of 519 for absolutely no good goddamn reason, with very minimal opportunity to look back at much needed context and character/story growth.

Pretty sure it was just a case of actually doing new genga, douga and finishing would've been less time-intensive. These were also mostly still shots, so each shot only requiring one key frame and no tweens is a hell of a lot easier for the production than hiring some poor bastard to scan, clean and crop a reel of animation that is probably stuffed somewhere in a warehouse collecting dust.

I also like getting new shots, I wish they'd do that for Dragon Ball Z scenes, too.
