“Black Goku” and other strange translations

Post by Aim » Fri Dec 24, 2021 12:13 am

I remember when Black was still an early mysterious figure that was translated as “Black Goku”, I just thought it was interesting.

Heck there’s even a thread here;

Another strange translation was by Funimation for Xenoverse 2, Black’s Rosé form was referred to as “Super Saiyan Rosé Goku Black”, this was specifically even used by Goku Black himself, despite him never claiming his name was “Goku Black”, he actually introduced himself as Son Goku. Hearing Black refer to himself actually as Goku Black was is so strange.

Just thought it’d ask if anyone else remembers this stuff.

EDIT: Also forgot to say that people used to think Black would go “Super Saiyan White”.

I have a MUGEN game (PC fighting game that’s a compilation of fan-developed content) and it includes “Super Saiyan White” Goku Black! :lol:

Regarding strange translations, I remember when Beerus was commonly referred to as “Bills” before he had an official English name.

Ahh I remember Bills, wow it was ages ago now. I’ll never forget how beautiful I thought SSG was as well as Beerus’ design.

That entire videogame was weird when it came to that DLC. Base Goku Black sounded like a smoker while Rosé Goku Black had a high-pitched voice with a british accent, this was a neat distinction and reference to Zamasu but it was quickly abandoned when the Dub came out (Base Black doesn't sound like a smoker, the british accent is toned down).
At his core Zamasu is good like Shin, though I guess you could say he was so fastidious that it backfired. But you know, for this "Future Trunks Arc" you had to depict Zamasu and Trunks' inner conflict, right? If this was back when I was drawing the manga myself then I doubt if I could have done it. I mean, I'm not very good at depicting the characters' psychology on the page. So this all came together because now I only have to think up the story. [...] On my own, I doubt I would have been able to express Zamasu's fall to the dark side.

Buu was always just Buu in anime, but in Xenoverse when you pair any form of Buu with Eis Shenron, the latter calls them by their game names, like Kid Buu or Super Buu.

Do they do that in Japanese as well?

I never understood the logic of making separate character slots for Cell Vegeta and Boo Vegeta. The only explanation I can think of is that they thought it would be weird to give him both Super Vegeta and Super Saiyan 2 as transformations.

Yeah and I mean, the fact Black referred to himself as “Goku Black” and added “Goku Black” at the end of his forms name is one of the reasons I think Funimation can’t be trusted.
