Bull**** Fighter, the Sequel Trilogy to the 1990 Dragon Ball Korean Live-Action Film

So I was on Twitter today and saw Goku was trending. I'm pretty sure I've heard of the guy before, so I decided to see what people were tweeting about him. Well, that was when I happened upon this tweet from one Carlos Palencia talking about the THREE sequels to 1990's live action Korean adaptation of Dragon Ball, Fight Son Goku, Win Son Goku!

Mr. Palencia was kind enough to provide me with a link to one of the films (which I will not be providing because it would violate Kanzenshuu's rules; check the quote tweets and replies and you should be able to find it), and the same channel actually has the whole trilogy.

The crazy thing is that upon skimming the films, it seems the have hardly ANYTHING to do with Dragon Ball. The films still star Goku, even having Heo Sung-tae reprise the role (who gained international fame last year for his role in Squid Game).

I found a bit in the first sequel where Nappa guy seems to come back to fight another guy in Saiyan armor.

But from my brief skim it seems that the Dragon Ball connections mostly end there (a full watch might reveal more DB stuff). Goku seems to have become a James Bond-esque secret agent, even having a title card reminiscent of Bond films, using guns, and wearing a suit.

There's also this red SD Gundam looking thing running around.

Not even the titles of the films are Dragon Ball anymore. Instead they're called 깡다구 화이터, Gangdagu Fighter. Or, according to Google Translate...

Bullshit Fighter.

A Korean dictionary says that 깡다구 actually translates to "guts; tenacity; persistence," so maybe a better title would be Tenacious Fighter.

But come on. Bullshit Fighter.

So, what do you think? I think I need to finally watch that original Korean film and follow it up with these sequels. This whole thing seems so zany I can't help but love it. All of my thanks to Mr. Palencia for telling the world about this wonderful, wonderful thing.

Wow, Heo Sung-tae was a live action performer of Son Gokuu? What a funny turn of events. Their work in Squid Game was so good!

Learning about these other films is so fascinating. The lack of anything to do with storylines from the comic is even more fascinating. I'd love to see these films incorporated into other Dragon Ball projects somehow.
