Goku's age confusion

Why must everyone think that Goku was five when DB began? Toriyama stated that Goku was Twelve when he met bulma, and 13 at the 21st tenkaichi budokai etc. The official dragonball website states that Goku is 8 For Goodness sake! How hard is that to find out, do some research Toei!

Its like the whole "Tullece is Goku's brother thing" some fans just don't get it

Actually, Goku states he's 12 at the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai.

Yup, sorry. He does state that he's 12 at the Tenkaichi Budôkai.

Which means he'd either been 11 at the start of the series, or very recently turned 12.

And for what it's worth, "Dragon Ball Z Son Gokû Densetsu" lists "kid Gokû" as being "12 to 15".

Well, the major issue is that the official website doesn't know it's stuff. The info is right there on wikipedia(which is written by many non-DBZ fans). Do your research Toei! Oh, I looked at my manga and yes, Goku is Twelve at the 21st Budokai. My mistake.

He's 12 at the beginnning, but thinks he's 14 because he doesnt know how to count (until Roshi taught him).

3 years pass to the 22nd Budoukai and he's 15.

3 More years pass to the 23rd and he's 18.

5 years pass between Dragonball and DragonballZ and he's 23.
A year passes in the afterlife in which he doesn't age.
Another year passes while he's away in space and he turns 24.
3 years pass while waiting for the Jinzouningen, he turns 27.
He spends a year in the room of spirit and time (effectively cancelling out the year he was dead) and thus he turns 28.
7 years pass but he's dead so he doesn't age.
10 more years pass to the end of DBZ so he's 38 at that point.

So his canon (manga canon) age range is 12 to 38.

Chronologically, his actual age should have been 45, but he spent 8 years dead (he got one back in the room of spirit and time, meaning he still had 7 ageless years). Thus his maximum age (mangawise) is 38.

Hope this clears things up a bit.

Most likely a screwup that they never corrected or cared for. Especially since they stated in their own dub that he was 12 at the beginning. It's been 3 years since DB ended for them, so it's likely they never got back to it.

Goku thinks he was fourteen at the start of DB but he states that he couldn't count pass 12 or 11

I am not sure about where he count up to till Master Roshi training but I am sure about him saying: "I am 14 years old!" when he tells Bulma his age.

He corrects it later on in the manga though. He tells Buruma that he made a mistake in his counting and 12 was actually his age.

If I remember correctly, Goku tells Bulma that he's 14 sometime around his first bath in one of the early Dragon Ball episodes. Isn't this accurate? But then again, I saw it in a fan-subbed Japanese DVD.

A Goku's Age thread. a lot of people seem confused by this. It's pretty simple math, if you ask me. We know goku was 12 at the twenty-first Tenkaichi Budokai. From there, we know how long before or after the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai was. Therefore, it's easy to know Goku's age.

Goku was:
11 or 12 when he met Bulma
12 in the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai
12 or 13 in the Red Ribon Army Saga
15 in the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai
18 in the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai
19 when Gohan was born
23 when Radditz arrived
(From here on, numbers in parenthesis are the number of years since Goku was born, and number not in parenthesis are Goku's physical age)
23 when he died the first time(Goku was dead for a year, during which he didn't age)
23(24) when he fought Nappa and Vegita
23(24) When he fought Freeza
23(24) when he became a Super Saiya-jin
24(25) when he returned to Earth
27(28) when he fought #19, and became ill
28(28) when he fought Cell(Goku spent a year in the Room of Spirit and Time while only a day passed in the outside world)
28(28) when he died for the second time
28(35) when he fights Buu(Goku was dead for 7 years, during which he did not age)
38(45) at the end of Dragonball Z, when he goes off with Uub
43(50) at the beginning of Dragonball GT
12?(50) after he is wished back to being a kid(Goku looks, to me, to be about the same age as he was in the beginning of Dragonball)
12?(50) when he fights Bebi
13?(51) in the Super 17 Saga
13?(51) against the Evil Dragons
43(51) at the end of Dragonball GT(present part)(He does turn back into a Grown-up at the end, doesn't he?)
43(151) at the end of Dragonball GT and in the Goku Jr. TV Special

There you have it. Now you can look at my handy chart, and know how old Goku was at any time during the anime, and not have to mess with any tricky math.

This also kind of helps with Broli's age since they were born on the same day... In my ealier post, I was trying to say that Goku told Bulma what he thought he age was, which was 14 but he was really about 11/12.

Yeah, but doesn't age not really matter to Saiya-Jin for a while. I recall hearing Vegeta saying that Saiya-Jin are a warrior race so they stay in their prime longer, or something like that.
