Eiichiro Oda & Akira Toriyama working together (2002)

Post by DB1984 » Tue Jun 27, 2023 11:28 am

While trying to google photos of Toriyama making a physical appearance before going into seclusion, I came upon this image. It's Toriyama working together with the creator of One Piece in 2002. I checked to see if it had been previously posted here before I did so. His profile is somewhat obscured (probably at Toriyama's behest!), but that's him all right. He had lost quite a bit of hair by that point, and is probably bald now. He still looks really good, though, if that 2017 image from when he was last seen physically is anything to go by.

This image comes from a 2002 book called Genius PC Cram School. The book explains how to draw comics on a personal computer, and begins with a joint Akira Toriyama and Ei’ichirō Oda feature explaining how to color, using pictures of Goku and Luffy as examples:

There are a few photos like this throughout the opening section, but you never get a full face out of Oda. It also comes with a bonus CD-ROM with a few sample images, and I think an actual version of Photoshop 6.0 / Elements to install.

I found a couple more similar images here: https://order.mandarake.co.jp/order/det ... 35&lang=zh

I'd buy it if only I knew Japanese. Too bad Viz or Crunchyroll or something doesn't put out an English version of this stuff.

I do actually own it -- that's me holding the book up above in the post I shared earlier. Happy to share other photos. There's just really not much worth looking at! They're all relatively small and you don't see much of either of the two dudes! Here's the best view of Oda:

When we covered this early on in the "Nearly Complete Works..." days, we shared a bunch of respective comments from Toriyama about his digital work-
