Next DBZ fighting game for the DS?
Just to piggyback off a couple of posts made in the Shin Budokai 2 thread, how do you all imagine a new DBZ fighting game could be brought to the DS?
Obviously there's the graphical limitations to consider, but on the other hand, there's the unique touchscreen control method.
Could a polygonal game be made? Could a 3-D first person game be developed? Or will we just see Supersonic Warriors 3?

Well, like I said in the SB2 thread, the DS is powerful enough to handle some decent 3D. It's practically on par with the N64 in that regard. It couldn't match up to Shin Budokai in graphics or power, but it could at least look and play similarly.
As for the touchscreen, I think the way SSW2 utilized it is about the best we could hope for, or even the best it could really be used. In RPGs and puzzle games and such, the potential uses for the touchscreen are endless. But in fighter games, which depend on quick reactions, precise button combinations for combos and stuff like that, there's not much use for it other than for things like switching in and out or initiating team attacks.
First-person? Nah. Just a decent 3D fighter that plays similar to the Budokai series is all I'm hoping for.

I think there could be some scope for the touchscreen to be used for Budokai 3-style fusion combos, or even an elaboration on that.
There could even be pre-set combos on the touchscreen which would have to be hit perfectly, giving a sense of urgency when you're in a fight.
I would love to see an improved system such as this for the next fighting game. (Though don't get me wrong, SSW1 and 2 are great games anyway!)

Right. Used for stuff like initiating combos, and motions for things like Fusion and beam struggles, and stuff like that.
Y'know, I was in the shower a couple minutes ago, and I was thinking about this topic. Washing my armpits must grant me some insane, temporary powers of insight, because I thought of something interesting.
You know what a DbZ fighter that fully utilizes the DS' graphic capabilities would probably end up looking (but hopefully not playing) like?
Final Bout.

Compare this random screenshot from Final Bout (apparently, Pan is either getting smacked in the head, or is demonstrating some freaky psychic powers)...

...To a screenshot from Mario 64 DS, which is the best example (that I've personally seen so far) of the DS's graphics capabilities.
Visually, the two aren't too different, quality-wise. The DS's graphics look even better, if you ask me. I'm not hoping a 3D DS fighter would play like Final Bout (God forbid), but rather saying I think this is what it would probably end up looking like.

If you took Final Bout-style graphics, gave them a bit of spit'n'polish and added newly stylised and revamped energy bars/names etc, then a 3D DBZ game would look quite good in my opinion.
You could even have 2D animation for certain special moves/end of fight poses.
*prays for this sort of game to come out*

Even though Final Bout is old, playing a Butoden game(s) on the DS wouldn't seem like such a bad idea. Yes, the DS can support Final Bout but just because it can doesn't mean it should. Nobody would buy the game..Besides, the Butoden games were just like Final Bout but in 2D with a decent fighting system. That would be the best fighter for the DS imo.

I've always been curious as to how they played, being in 2D and all.

I believe Shin Butoden was for the Saturn (Was that basically Ultimate Battle 22?). The Butoden series was in the super fanicom. Out of the three, two was easily the best. Another game that I should've mentioned was the obvious Hyper Dimension. It was the Buu Arc version of Street Fighter.wannywan wrote:The Butoden games were the Saturn ones, right?

I'm not saying I want a DS port of Final Bout (I have the game, I know how terribly it plays), I'm just saying that a 3D fighter on the DS would probably look similar to it, based on what I've seen the DS can do. Combined with Shin Budokai-like gameplay, it'd be an awesome game.
I'll have to take your word for the Butoden series' gameplay since I've never played them (I did watch a YouTube clip or two, though).

I've played the various SNES 2D DBZ fighters on my brother's chipped X-BOX emulator*, though I've never remembered the names as they were in Japanese.
So anyway, any more thoughts on how a new DBZ fighter could work on the DS?
*I'm not pro-emulators/piracy etc; my bro' did it to his X-BOX and I poke about on it from time to time.

I wouldn't want to see too much jiggery pokery with the touch screen, that's for sure. I really like the stylus when it's the main method of control (see: Project Rub, Wario Ware Touched, Clubhouse Games et al), but it can be quite annoying having to quickly switch from using the d-pad/face buttons to using the touch screen and the stylus.

It works OK in Sonic Rush (in the special stages) and in games like Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam (where the 'specials' are buttons on the touchscreen, effectively giving you more 'buttons').ChibiKenji wrote:I wouldn't want to see too much jiggery pokery with the touch screen, that's for sure. That's what I'm saying. The touchscreen would be used for things like initiating combos, and doing special, minigame-like motions for things like tagouts, Fusions, beam clashes and stuff like that, but the majority of the actual, high-speed, reflexes-dependent gameplay would use the normal D-pad and buttons.

It works well with Sonic Rush because it gives you time to switch, it's not just 'hey, look, you're speeding along! Oh, wait, grab your stylus quickly, it's time to change!'. As for TH, I've never played Downhill Jam, but I never bothered with the touchscreen specials in American Sk8land.wannywan wrote:It works OK in Sonic Rush (in the special stages) and in games like Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam (where the 'specials' are buttons on the touchscreen, effectively giving you more 'buttons').
The magic seals in Castlevania: DoS were a nice little use of the touchscreen, I thought.
I could live with that, as long as you were given time to get the stylus in hand; if Fusions and all of that were done like the Budokai games where you do a normal combo and then there's a small cutscene in which you would do your touchscreen input that'd be pretty cool, but I'm really not sure if it would add all that much to the game.SSj Kaboom wrote:That's what I'm saying. How about Budokai 1? The character designs for the Ps2 version are entirely 3D designed rather than cel-shaded. I swear when Goku transforms to SSJ for the first time against Freeza in one of the cut-scenes, it looks like a perfect mixture of a polished Final Bout and the anime. IMO, it was just gorgeous.wannywan wrote:If you took Final Bout-style graphics, gave them a bit of spit'n'polish and added newly stylised and revamped energy bars/names etc, then a 3D DBZ game would look quite good in my opinion.

I know what you're talking about (it's the only one of the Ps2 games I've played extensively), but we're talking DS-capable graphics, here. Final Bout's an early Ps1 game, and it's graphics are about on par (maybe even less) than what the DS can do.Conan the SSJ wrote:How about Budokai 1? A real fighting game with proper 3D on the DS would be sweet. Sadly Nintendo seems to be the only developer intent on really using the DS'es 3D. I hope at least the next DBZ game for the DS after the card RPG wont be SuperSonic Warriors 3. Don't get me wrong, the SuperSonic Warrior games are pretty good but they get repetive. The first was good and the second one was still great but it feelt a little too much like it's predecessor. I think a third one would get to repetive and wouldn't work.
Also, i have no problem with having some kind of touch controls as long as it's not too major. I would enjoy some kind of small task you have to do to for example fuse. Let's say you do the button combination for fusion. It then switches over to a mode where you get a little time to whip out your stylus and you then has to do a little task to do the fusion successful, maybe in the style of Ouendan! or something. I think that would be sweet.

The only real need for the touch screen is for the game menu and maybe some mini games. If you are fighting against someone, its hard to fight while using the stylus. My biggest problem with SSW2 was the translation and the mediocre choice of skins for battle. There is something about Adult Gohan not wearing Goku's gi when he should that pisses me off. If they make a SSW3 with wifi, I'll probably buy it..only because its a Dragonball game.
