Original Dragon Ball returns to Poland on GameToon
And Polish fans don't have long to wait, its this Monday (September 2nd). Looks like an episode will be premiering Monday-Friday at midnight with runs at 7am, 4:30pm and additional reruns of the previous day's premiers.
Sadly anyone hoping one of the pre-Kai TV series would finally get a Polish dub and not a lector may be disappointed as it will be the Japanese version with subs. Supposedly this is to allow viewers to appreciate the "atmosphere and authenticity", so I guess these airings have purists in mind.
A dub may have been possible with Polsat Games as the broadcaster but from what BartG has said they have a policy of only airing content in widescreen and may not have the facilities to crop footage themselves. As such if TOEI didn't offer a 16:9 option it was not going to happen.
Anyway hope you Polish fans enjoy this. Still great to see the original series being pushed.

Well, even if it's a just lector voice over and not a Polish dub proper at least it's the original uncut Japanese version as opposed to back in the day where they were given the French dubs censored footage and all. Funny enough they also had Sailor Moon back in the '90s and the Japanese version with lector voiceover is what they used there. The reason why they got the French version particularly in DB and DBZ's case is due to AB Groupe apparently having the license to the majority of Europe at the time, and thus in most cases being sourced from S.O.F.I's scripts and pre edited footage.
DB collection related goals as of now:
1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)
2.) Collect rest of manga
3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

If DBZ gets aired on Polsat Games with a Polish dub, the footage they would use for broadcast would be either the Orange Brick version or the "Season" BD version.Dragon Ball Ireland wrote: Tue Aug 27, 2024 8:09 am A dub may have been possible with Polsat Games as the broadcaster but from what BartG has said they have a policy of only airing content in widescreen and may not have the facilities to crop footage themselves. For OG DB and DBGT, however, they could just use any existing video masters of both them (including Funimation's "Brick" versions of both series) and simply crop them to 16:9 since there are no cropped 16:9 widescreen releases of OG DB and DBGT.

Do you think airing the original series in Japanese with subtitles for Polish viewers offers a better experience than creating a dub, or would you have preferred a Polish dub instead?Dragon Ball Ireland wrote: Tue Aug 27, 2024 8:09 am And Polish fans don't have long to wait, its this Monday (September 2nd). Re: Original Dragon Ball returns to Poland on GameToon
I'm a fan of dubs and I think they play an important part in making anime more accessible and they're works of art on their own that I love to learn about and study. So I'd prefer for Polish fans to finally have a dub for any of the original three anime. I can't speak for the streaming situation in Poland and whether or not the Japanese version is available with local subs. I guess if it never was legally available I'm glad Polish sub fans get what they wanted. I'll always say having a dub option is never a bad thing. For me the more ways I can enjoy the shows I love the bettertimjulius1122 wrote: Fri Aug 30, 2024 8:29 am Do you think airing the original series in Japanese with subtitles for Polish viewers offers a better experience than creating a dub, or would you have preferred a Polish dub instead?

I am a bit disappointed to be honest
I mean it's great we are getting Dragon Ball distributed, that's always nice. On the other hand, if they're already airing DB, I whish they would give it DB Kai/Super treatment we got. Those two series were dubbed and although the dub is seen as a bit childish amongst polish fans, it is still ton better than the version with franchise translation and polish lector we got in the nineties (where Goku was Songo
)
I would love to watch og Dragon Ball with my kid and such a version would be ideal for that.
Airing something which can be easily found anywhere online seems a bit little.
