"International Incident"

While going through some links on Wikipedia, I managed to find this interesting little article. As you can tell by some of the things they're talking about, this is VERY old, and back when FUNimation was still pretty different from what they've become now. Nonetheless, it's kinda interesting, and Sabat and Fukanaga have some interesting things to say during certain sections. They've even got a picture of the "Face of EVIL" himself, Barry Watson (his little brother makes a rather funny comment about his job in the editing department too :P).

Awesome find! I read the Dallas Observer all the time, making this even more fun.

I remember reading that story in the Dallas Morning News about a dad comparing the DB comics to softcore porno, it was this whole story about how DB is actually an anime filled with violence and nudity and parents should be SCARED!! BOOGA BOOGA BOOGA!!! This is what leads to these misconceptions that DB is more "hardcore" than it really is.

I actually think that article is indirectly how Sabat e-mailed me the infamous "I'm not afraid of you" letter... Forgot the circumstances and name-calling that is consisted of, but it sounds familiar.

Pretty much goes to show that I don't remember anything pre-2003 concerning this site and fandom, in general.

Toys "R" Us made national headlines for their decision to pull Dragonball Z comics from the shelves because they contained a nude Gohan and a little girl who lifts her skirt to show an old man her panties.
They make Bulma sound like she was 4 when she did that. Stupid media... Viz would still run DBZ unedited if it weren't for stores like Toys "R" Us.
But he notes that FUNimation is about to expand into the anime-snob market by releasing the unedited Japanese series with English subtitles on DVD.
Wee! I'm a "snob"! I wonder if it was the media or FUNimation that said that.

Come again?

Yeah I saw this article before....waaaaaaay back when. I also have trouble remembering my fandom days prior though I can remember bit's and pieces of when I was first introduced to it in 99 but pre-2003 it get's blurry. Funny how memory works.... It's also strange how the farther from Texas you go the less you hear from FUNI. Then again it's hard to blame them when they get hate mail that is horribly written and with huge typos. Still that one about FUNImation's rules made me laugh a bit.

article wrote:He insists he was instrumental in convincing Barry Watson and FUNimation that all the vocal chops they required could be found in the surrounding area.
So, Mr. Sabat is the reson why they dropped the Ocean cast????

I don't know whether to be happy or sad...

Off-topic, now I want to see that letter too.

As would I. I get the impression he hates the majority of the elitist anime community.

I'm sure getting tons of negative e-mails and comments about yourself would do that to you as well.

That was a pretty good article. It made me sympathetic to Funi though.

So true... ^^;;; Why can't people keep their mouths shut a little better when they're angry like that, anyway? :(

Oh, I don't actually still *have* the text of the e-mail, or anything. Keep in mind how long ago this was, and how many computers I've gone through :P.
