AB vidéo has given up on continuing their Dragon Ball releases on Blu Ray
Numerous sources, including french now, has confirmed that Dragon Ball will not continue to be released from AB. There will be no more upscales. AB themselves got fed up dealing with and waiting for Toei. They're fading out all anime from Toei on their TV channel, too.
I got asked not to give out sources until now, so that will have to wait, but I will update topic with it later.
And no, it was not because AB used the broadcast video, it was because they asked for the Dragon Box masters to get rid of ghosting issues when they used the DVDs to upscale from. Toei ghosted them for months, said they were gonna make their own upscale, then told them to use SV's upscale. And no, Toei isn't gonna do their own upscale anymore.

That's a shame, I know AB did try really hard for the fans and didn't want to settle for less, and French fans deserve great home releases.

Yeah, but not only french fans. People world wide imported the set that was released.Dragon Ball Ireland wrote: Sat Apr 05, 2025 1:56 am That's a shame, I know AB did try really hard for the fans and didn't want to settle for less, and French fans deserve great home releases.

It's intentional. They knew if they put out a perfect release they won't be able to sell the show anymore. They want to be able to continue to release flawed products with only the slightest improvement between each one.omegalucas wrote: Sat Apr 05, 2025 4:33 am Yey. Another good release goes unfinished. The thing is, this wasn't a perfect release. A perfect release would be a complete rescan and restoration. But Toei won't ever do that.

For sure. I know fans from the UK and US that imported it. I considered it, and I still might, just to show that the demand is still there.sangofe wrote: Sat Apr 05, 2025 2:12 am Yeah, but not only french fans. People world wide imported the set that was released.
Definitely cursed. I feared like many that these Blu-Rays would go the way of the level sets, but I didn't want to believe it would happen. I guess the one good thing is we know AB didn't want to cancel these releases as it was a product by fans for the fans.omegalucas wrote: Sat Apr 05, 2025 4:33 am Yey. I have the utmost respect for the work that Seed of Might do, but it's sad that TOEI isn't willing to put in the same amount of effort to make this series that's made them millions look and sound better than it ever has. It sucks for fans that want to "support the official release" too, because in a perfect world that would be what we could all do and be rewarded for.Vegeta th3 4th wrote: Sat Apr 05, 2025 3:06 am Thank God for Seed of Might. TOEI has also screwed the UK and Ireland out of great releases because of their insistence on certain materials being used.
That seems to be Crunchyroll/Funimation's mindset with Dragon Ball Z, but AB Groupe actually cared about putting out the best possible release for fans. They even put in the effort to do their own colour correction. It just sucks that like Manga UK they were forever screwed by having to deal with TOEI being picky.Vegeta th3 4th wrote: Sat Apr 05, 2025 4:34 am It's intentional. Re: AB vidéo has given up on continuing their Dragon Ball releases on Blu Ray
Damn it. At least we got the first 68 episodes from them before this happened. I can only hope that Toei or Funimation will eventually do a native HD scan of the original 16mm film for the series at this point. It's a real shame that the best release we have for the first series is an unfinished upscale. Why can't there just be an actually good, finished blu-ray release for all three series (DB, Z, GT)? Toei's gone back and scanned their old Super Sentai and Kamen Rider shows into HD -- why not Dragon Ball?
Re: AB vidéo has given up on continuing their Dragon Ball releases on Blu Ray
Toei hasn’t given the series a release since the Dragon Boxes in the early 2000s. I don’t think they really care about that. Z doesn’t even have a blu ray release in Japan because they apparently think Kai is good enough or something.Vegeta th3 4th wrote: Sat Apr 05, 2025 4:34 amIt's intentional. Re: AB vidéo has given up on continuing their Dragon Ball releases on Blu Ray
Well, it's a good thing we have fans out there (SOM.etc) who have filled the gap and provided the best available fan restored version of the original three DB series. Much the same as those passionate Star Wars fans and groups producing the highest quality possible of the unaltered versions of the original Star Wars trilogy such as Harmy's Despecialized Editions and 4K77/80/83 and it shows the dedication of the fans to compensate for the lack of effort by the official companies to put out what the fans want. In particular those who grew up with the pre Special Edition versions.
I guess this shows how out of touch the suits at Toei are, as they haven't released the series themselves on home video since those sets of single discs from 2005 to 2009 which were recompiling the Dragon Boxes in smaller form. All they've done in terms of HD releases has been the modern material i.e. Kai and onward, and the only stuff from the OG era was the DB/Z movies five or six years ago and we know the controversy surrounding those relative to the streaming versions. With Toei's reputation for being a company that has very backwards ass ways of doing things, i can see why AB made such a decision.

2.) Collect rest of manga

If i can give one point to SEGA, is that they know their releases suck, and they have no problem with fans "fix" Sonic games or make great mods, sometimes even hire said fans (Christian Whitehead for example
)

Probably talking about Toei. If an international distributor puts out a superior product Japanese people may end up reverse importing it... Although the smart move would be to actually let AB produce it and then take the finished product and release it in Japan but that would require minimal planning...sangofe wrote: Sat Apr 05, 2025 9:43 amI'm not sure why you're writing this or who you're claiming did what intentionally?Vegeta th3 4th wrote: Sat Apr 05, 2025 4:34 amIt's intentional. I guess the only slight hope for a proper HD release now will be for the 50th anniversary of the anime?omegalucas wrote: Sat Apr 05, 2025 9:49 amProbably talking about Toei. Great, my fear of this release has come true at last. Just like Funimation's Level sets before it, AB's excellent Dragon Ball Blu-Ray is left incomplete and cancelled. It looks like I'll continue to make my own physical copies of this legendary franchise, after all. This royally sucks. Yet another casualty of Toei's incompetence.

I plan on doing this once Seed of Might releases their color corrected version of Z. I plan on using the Kanzenban covers for the case art.HarveyPlissken wrote: Sat Apr 05, 2025 11:18 amIt looks like I'll continue to make my own physical copies of this legendary franchise, after all.

The Kanzenban artwork for DB/Z is a really cool idea. I'm looking for Kanzenban style art for GT. Any ideas?Vegeta th3 4th wrote: Sat Apr 05, 2025 11:50 amI plan on doing this once Seed of Might releases their color corrected version of Z. No, I do not. What I'm planning to do is to take Seed of Might's Dragon Boxes and burn them onto BD-R discs. I think I'm gonna keep it sub only (Japanese Broadcast Audio with English subtitles).sangofe wrote: Sat Apr 05, 2025 12:29 pmDo you make your own upscales?HarveyPlissken wrote: Sat Apr 05, 2025 11:18 amGreat, my fear of this release has come true at last.
