Broly vs Gogeta – Budokai 3 Opening vs. DBS: Broly Movie

Hey everyone,

I've always found it fascinating how Budokai 3’s opening (released back in 2004) showed a short but epic clash between Broly and Gogeta — long before it officially happened in the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie in 2018.

In Budokai 3, Gogeta (Super Saiyan) fights Broly in a fast-paced sequence, ending with a Super Kamehameha. At the time, this was purely fan service — since Gogeta hadn’t appeared in much canon material, and Broly was still a movie-only character.

Fast forward 14 years later, and we get the real fight — SSGSS Gogeta vs. Legendary Super Saiyan Broly, animated beautifully and fully canon.

So here's what I'm wondering:

Was the Budokai 3 intro just a coincidence ????? , or do you think Toei/Bandai were already toying with the idea back then ?

Do you think the game intro inspired the later movie ?

Which version of the fight did you personally enjoy more — the stylish tease in B3 or the full cinematic battle in the movie?

Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts or any behind-the-scenes info you might know!

Do I think this was them laying the groundwork for "canon" versions of these characters to be introduced at some point down the line? No. I think this was just them marketing a product- Just like how those "canon" versions were ultimately created to market that movie.

They're the most popular movie hero and the most popular movie villain- Putting them together is a marketing no brainer.

The opening and the movie are both still purely fan service. Nothing changed.

I always loved the Budokai 3 opening, along with the rest of the game.

As others have said the Broly vs Gogeta thing is likely just a case of them being the 2 most popular movie characters. The Tenkaichi 3 opening also had them fight each other funnily enough.

The DBS Broly fight is an actual full battle, so it feels like an unfair comparison.

Their brief scuffle in B3's opening was always cool to see though. It felt like the opening was showing off the potential match ups you could have with B3's roster; Gohan vs Meta Cooler, Gogeta vs Broly, SS4 Goku vs Omega Shenron etc..
