Von's super official thread: Doujin of the Week!

Post by Von » Sat Jul 26, 2025 5:04 pm

Hello evernyan!

Von here, since I won't be attending any cons any time soon, I decided might as well transfer some of my ~knowledge~ to the masses (and maybe archive it here). I have about 2000 of these badboys and I need to sort through them, so might as well post about them, at least those whose covers are widely known, and whose permission by the authors I actually got.

If permission given (or if the author has stated reposts / showing the inside is ok publicly, or has passed and/or it's over 30 years old) I may post and/or translate a page or two for funsies.

I personally don't like people scanlating whole books and then printing it and selling it, against the author's wishes, it's pretty rude (and has driven many authors to stop sharing their works at all!) so please don't ask me for any scans at all.

These books are precious souvenirs of what the fandom was at the time, made with love and with an understanding of privacy and mutual respect amongst fans. I am buying as many as I can, directly from the authors if possible, or otherwise from (true) second hand / "recycling" stores. As much as possible, I also try to convey my gratitude to the authors (every now and then) and say "I really liked this specific part!" because validation my beloved, right?

I will be posting, once a week in this thread, a new (old) doujin that isn't Young Jijii, Toyble, Omada or Dragon Garow Lee.

Yes, this is a full post about "doujin for/by women!", mostly!

I hope you guys will enjoy this little thread.

Furusawa Jun'ya 古澤純也 - Furujun ふるじゅん

He was NOT an animator and he was NOT Toriyama's assistant.

Furusawa is (probably) one of the only guys I will be talking about in this thread, and he is also a confirmed "doujinshi author who went pro" as he announced he was going pro himself. He became a merch artist (doing stuff for Showa Note, like, underlays, stationary...), and in 1993 and in 2015 he published a "sketchbook" containing his sketches (and some linearts) for those official artworks. He kept participating in doujinshi circles (probably because he was not a mangaka / contracted by a publishing company at the time), so sometimes his artworks pop in other anthologies, and he eventually also self published a BL Bara story. He also drew a Legend of Zelda (Oath of Lilith) 4 volume story in an official capacity, which is pretty cool!

If you can think of glowy/big pupils Goku and Gohan in casual clothes and being happy, and Angry Vegeta, then it's also probably him!
If you can think of a Sexy Trunks official artwork, then it's him (I like to think he also had the Trunks awakening, like all of us...)

Image

As a doujinshi author, "Furujun" drew short stories (like, 3-5 pages) and illustrations, and participated in anthologies. Here: Orange Juice 2, Orange Juice 3 (he did the cover), and his own compilation work: Hero!. He then offered drawings to a ton of other doujin authors to insert in their books (and I'm still surprised to find a random Furusawa artwork in some small thing every now and then haha)

Image

In Hero! (anthology 1992, where he published an unfinished story), he announced he was 19 (when the newscaster apologizes for Furujun dropping the story).
Orange Juice 2 dates as far back as July 1989.
He was either SIXTEEN OR SEVENTEEN when this (translated by yours truly) was made:

Chikashi Kubota told me during his interview in March 2025 that seeing Furusawa's works in Animedia at the end of his primary school/beginning of his middle school years, and then him announcing he was becoming pro, motivated him to work extra hard. "Even regular fans can become part of Dragon Ball!" amazed him.

In April 2020, his boat had disappeared and never found, so his death was pronounced on May 1st, 2020. He was only around 47 at the time (about 6 years older than Toyotaro and Kubota)

I miss him greatly and I hope his partner, family and loved ones know that he has fans around the world.

Very cool thread. Thanks! Also extremely impressive by that first author. Especially at his age. Very sad he passed away so early.

Furusawa was a gift to the fandom community, everyone I've talked to who ever sat at a table near him only had kind words about him....

Update: I've rearranged the piles to have a better view of everything I have. Here's a couple of pictures for you guys to truly understand the scope lol

I may also need help on HOW to organize them because "by date" would break series, "by author" ignores anthologies / circles / name changes and I have a gazillion books of authors who only published one or two books, "by character/ship" causes issues for multiple characters / themes, "by genre" is super subjective (and again some anthologies have gag / angst / violence / whatever in one single book), by size would also break series.... and just nsfw/sfw would (also) break some series and would only have two categories :'(

Today’s doujin artist is GICHI!
She's most certainly Naho Ooishi, the author of the manga adaptation of Yo Son Goku and Friends, the manga original Episode of Bardock (which was later adapted to an OAV), and the best piece of DB media ever: Dragon Ball SD.

As a doujin artist, starting in 2005 (yes this is 20 years old), she participated in the circle POWER LEVEL 69, and published 6 fanbooks: 4 SFW / gag and 2 nsfw (goku x vegeta).
The first two fanbooks were re-published in another book called LANDFALL. I would guess a LANDFALL 2 was planned for the fanbooks 3 and 4 but because she was recruited by Shueisha to draw the Yo Son Goku and Friends Return manga adaptation of the OAV, it was probably forbidden.

You can see all 7 of these books here as well as a couple of pages to highlight the gag/visual jokes that made her stand out :o
(Goku getting exorcised will never not be funny to me)

Today's doujin artist is Hikaru Hoshi!
I'm certain you know her work, as she is the main author of the Head Chala doujinshi series! But she's not the only one, Hirano Ayu is another member of the Circle ("Evil Sisters" ^^)

HeadChala is a gag doujin series with PiccoloxGoku, but nothing happens outside of the X (R18) extras.

18 "Head Chala" books were published in total (excluding reprints / omnibuses). I am lucky to own them all.
Head Chala 0 to 12 (1989-1995)
X1 and X2 (1996)
G1 to G4 (1997-1998)
and HeadChoro (2000)

In the G series, Bra has a 'crush' on Goku, and HeadChoro has Marron drawing PiccoKu fanart! Otherwise, the artwork is stunningly similar to Toriyama's, it's hilarious and full of romcom situations, short stories of people punching each other to oblivion, hidden messages and the occasional "god damn it already!" moment.
Between 1990 and 1995, the main series was published at the same time as DB was being published in Weekly Shonen Jump, so the author "live-reacted" through her doujins.
I also own n°0 (1989), as well as the NSFW PiccoKu X1 and X2 books, but I am too lazy to dig for them for the pictures, so you'll forgive me for using an old pic for the n°0

I need to write this in bold. Twice a year, a book of between 150 and 200 pages was published. For every Comiket. That's almost 7 pages per week, aka a little over half of what Toriyama used to publish at the time (as Weekly Shonen Jump chapters were 15 pages and most years had 48 to 50 issues). As a HOBBY. That's impressive!

I'll be going on holiday in a few days for a couple of weeks so you guys are getting a few more "doujin of the week" posts in advance ^^

And this one is one I was given permission to translate and share!

~Masato Aoi~

Masato Aoi was active in the late 80s and early 90s in the DB doujin circles ("Adventure BrothersZ" with a gazillion different spellings).
I own about half of the books, they sadly don't pop around often, the author actually uploaded some of their old stories on pixiv!

The art style is impeccable. This artwork in particular, cover of one of the anthology books, is so expressive ("that's my dad :D" ">_<")

Image

There's a ton of small gags, and father-son moments that are obviously "Vegeta is such a gremlin" moments. Plenty of these predate Trunks the Story, so they do take inspiration from Father of Goku (there's baby Geets and Grandpa Vegeta with Baby Trunks...). I would have loved Masato Aoi to tackle Goten, it would've been hilaious! Alas they dropped from DB before the Buu saga started. Loooong before that....

Since I was given permission to translate these stories, here is where I posted the English version of one of them. Of course, this is far from professional, but the gist of it should be accurate haha

Preview page (right to left, the first page is the page on the right) of the one I translated (links below for the full thing):
Image

What I found most interesting in Paradise Lost is that this was drawn before the Trunks the Story chapter was published, so we have Long Hair Future Gohan, but also, kid Trunks / the sword and the lack of design for the Androids / Cyborgs is FASCINATING.

And so is the fact that this Future Gohan never lived up to Piccolo or Goku, so he refused to be called master (or “father” as in fatherly figure).

I adore this story so much.

Please do check their account on pixiv and comment on those old stories! I know they’re still active in other fandoms (even if I’m not sure they check the DB account often). Of course, don't repost ^^ share from my links, and don't do pinterest and all that crap please T_T

Thank you for doing this thread! I like to collect doujinshi, but hadn't delved into any Dragon Ball ones. I've really enjoyed seeing these and it makes me want to pick some up!
