Nagamine Tatsuya (Director of DBS Broly) Has Passed Away

The director of DBS Broly and one of two series directors for the Tournament of Power passed away over the summer. He was also known for leading One Piece during the Wano arc and helping to turn it into the huge production that produced a ton of good animation.
This is really devastating news. Nagamine was only fifty-four.
A memorial was apparently held this week at Toei Animation for his colleagues. They must all be devastated.
Fuck.

RIP, 54 is such a young age today. May rewatch Super Broly to celebrate his life and legacy with this franchise.

May he rest in peace; such a massive loss for the anime industry. 54 is indeed very young to pass away in nowadays.

Such a tragic loss. He was a key figure in so much stuff I love, particularly DB and One Piece. 54 is way too young. My heart goes out to him and his loved ones.
I hope you rest well, Nagamine-san.

I'm surprised we are only knowing by now and Toei and japanese media still didn't say anything.
I assume his family asked for privacy? Even so seems strange how they managed to keep it under wraps until now.
He was one of my favourite directors in the industry. Helped saving both DBS and One Piece.
Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Tournament of Power arc, One Piece Film Z, Wano arc, One Piece Heart of Gold... Liked all of them.
A great loss. Rest in peace, Nagamine-san.

A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.
Favourite old DB Animators: Masaki Sato and Tadayoshi Yamamuro
Favourite new DB Animators: Yuya Takahashi and Chikashi Kubota

I mean, it probably wasn't too hard. His closest friends and family probably knew in advance to keep things quiet until they were ready to make it public. Three or four months isn't that hard to keep under wraps.

Although one of several contributors, Nagamine directed the best Dragon Ball film ever made. That's a legacy worth remembering.
RIP.

Truly a one-of-a-kind artist. His work even outside of Dragon Ball was brilliant and admirable. He will be missed. RIP.

This took me by surprise. I did not expect this to happen.

Nagamine had been fighting a unspecified illness for a year and passed away on August 20.
This sucks so much.

The Japanese are traditionally very private when it comes to this stuff. Shit we didn't know about Toriyama's death for almost 2 weeks.FortuneSSJ wrote: Thu Nov 13, 2025 11:49 am I'm surprised we are only knowing by now and Toei and japanese media still didn't say anything.

Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Ishitani Megumi wrote a thread about how Nagamine mentored her on Dragon Ball Super and helped support her through her time on One Piece. It really does seem like Nagamine was an incredibly cool guy. We already knew he had a lot of connections with animators and such, but reading a staff member's own words directly has so much weight to them.
