Re: I reviewed Dragon Ball Daima!
Nice review.
Some things I loved in it:
Some things I loved in it:
- The memories of your guest finding the manga at his school library and how addictive the story was for you
- Your understanding of Toriyama's mindset, namely his humility and appreciation for the animator's work of adapting his material
- How you show attention to detail with things like guns being made fun of in Dragon Ball
- The breakdown of the story by arcs, particularly delving into the new characters, their dynamics with Goku and crew and the performances
- Touching on character moments with classic characters like Vegeta and Bulma
- Your explanation for how the fights were interesting and fulfilled a purpose
- Explaining how the weekly release of new episodes hurt the flow but binging helped slightly
- Pointing out the Gendarmerie Force were a poor man's Ginyu Force
- Pointing out the wasted potential of Neva
- Your point about how the series had great exploration with things like the backstory of the Kais
Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

Re: I reviewed Dragon Ball Daima!
I don't view podcasts very often, but was curious enough to check this out.
Good review. Your analysis aligns with much of my own; especially concur that all of Act 1 and the latter portion of Act 3 are the highlights of the show, while Act 2 going into Act 3 (namely episodes 13 to 15) are probably its nadir, though still largely enjoyable. Daima is a much lower key adventure tale that thrives more on its character beats and the themes of its world than on being overly bombastic or plot-driven, which does make it highly reminiscent of Toriyama's short works, albeit with a Dragon Ball coat of paint. Plot-driven stories aren't really my thing, so this is pretty much my cup of tea entirely. Also agreed with your guest that it's a great recommendation for newcomers.
Glad you enjoyed it enough that it's your favorite modern project! DBS Broly is my #1, but Daima and Battle of Gods aren't far behind. I'd say they're both about tied for #2 in my book.
