How many more years the original VAs of Goku and Vegeta around the world will be playing their roles well enough?
How many more years the original VAs of Goku and Vegeta around the world will be playing their roles well enough?
This question applies only to the original Japanese version and the dubs that have retained the original voice actors of Goku and Vegeta to this day like the Funimation English dub, the Latin American dub and others.
I was wondering the other day since Sean Schemmel for example has set the bar very high when it comes to screaming. Will he be just as good at the screaming part in let's just say 10 years from now?

Geekdom101 asked Sean Schemmel about this and he said he doesn't want to be playing Goku forever and only wants to keep going until he has enough money to retire. That will be a challenge though, the US is not a cheap place to live by any stretch of the imagination, particularly California.
Sadly we may have also already seen Schemmel's peak as he is 57 now. Masako Nozawa is just on another level and is one of those exceptionally rare talents who can deliver solid performances for a role as vocally demanding as Goku well into their 60s, 70s and 80s.

Um. That would not apply to the English dub, then.TheRed259 wrote: Sun Jan 11, 2026 2:29 pmThis question applies only to the original Japanese version and the dubs that have retained the original voice actors of Goku and Vegeta to this day like the Funimation English dub, the Latin American dub and others.

Probably means actors that have retained the role for a condiderably long amount of time.Shaddy wrote: Mon Jan 12, 2026 7:29 amUm. For Goku we have Ian James Corlett who played him for over a year, Peter Kelamis was a bit shorter than that before he returned for the Westwood dub and played him for another few months, but Sean Schemmel has had the role the longest as he's been adult Goku in every Funimation inhouse dub since 1999.
Brian Drummond likewise voiced Vegeta for about 2 years but since 1999 he was replaced by Chris Sabat (not counting the Westwood dub and Ocean dub of Kai since they were independent of Funimation).

I think I’m ready for a new cast. A clean slate across the board. The new actors for a lot the mini versions of characters were a lot more natural in Daima. I preferred the voices for Mini Piccolo, Vegeta, Bulma, and Supreme Mai over their adult voices.
I grew kind of exhausted of Sean’s Goku in Sparking Zero. I don’t think Future Trunks, Sabat’s characters, and all these characters have aged well.

Sadly, the best Italian Goku (Paolo Torrisi) already died in 2005. His replacement (Claudio Moneta) will turn 59 this year, so he'll be probably fine for a while.
Gianluca Iacono (the Italian Vegeta since day one) will turn 56, so that's even better.
Ironically, the older of the bunch is Patrizia Scianca, the female dubber of all the young Son boys, who's going to be 65 soon.

Nozawa, 89, said she'd work until she'd turn 182 and I fully 100% believe she fully intends to do so. She will also probably bury everyone
(For DAIMA she still got it)
Horikawa (Vegeta, 67) is still alive, kicking and doing concerts.
French kid Goku (Brigitte Lecordier, 69) has been voicing him since DB aired in France in 1988, she's still very much active and working (and going on the anti AI crusade for theater and voice over works).
French adult Goku (Patrick Borg, 68) is also still very much active and working, but sadly, Eric Legrand (French Vegeta) passed away last year. Patrick misses him dearly (they acted as an old married couple when voicing Gogeta in DBS Broly lol you can find the clips on youtube of these two annoying each other).
I would love to tell you about their latest work for DB, but alas, Toei Europe STILL hasn't given us ANY European Daima dubs (but Spain SPA and Catalan were announced last december, SOOOO... There's hope)
