Kōzō Shioya (Majin Buu) has passed away at age 71

Talent agency Aoni Production announced on Wednesday that voice actor Kōzō Shioya had died on January 20 due to cerebral hemorrhage. He was 71. His immediate family held a private funeral service.

I read about his passing earlier today. The Majin Boo arc was my introduction to the series, and I loved his performance.

I already shared similar sentiments elsewhere, but it's heartbreaking that another phenomenal talent has left us too soon. His performances as various Boo forms are absolutely legendary, and his chemistry with both of the previous Mr. Satan actors has been key to selling that character dynamic over the years. I'm going to miss hearing him in the Galactic Patrol arc.

Rest well, Shioya-san. I hope you, Gouri-san, and Ishizuka-san are having a chill time together in the next life.

I also loved the Majin Boo arc and thought having a gag villain felt like a return to Dragon Ball's roots. There was a gravitas to Shioya's performance that made Boo terrifying that provided a wonderful juxtaposition.

At the end of 2025 I was just thinking about how crazy it was that the entire cast of DBGT Final Bout is alive and well, over a quarter of century since the game's release, as I happen to have a nostalgic charm to the game's entire presentation.
But with time it's unavoidable that something bad eventually happens...

You were an awesome Majin Buu in all media you appeared in, Mr. Kōzō.
Every form had it's own specific charm to it, thanks to their perfectly fitting voices.
