Brutz Waves

Post by Ben Plante » Thu May 13, 2004 2:33 am

Okay... in a past 'Ask VegEX', it was stated that the pun on the term Brutz Waves was obvious. Well, not to me.

What is the pun there? Help?

Brutz waves turn Saiyans into giant apes. They make Saiyans more "brutish".

If you still can't get it, seek help. Immedietly.

Yeah, I get it now. Much simpler than I thought.

I remember once seeing it referred to as 'Bruits' Waves, which made me wonder if it was, like, Fruits, but with a B. You know, Yasai = Vegetables, Bruits = Fruits, blah blah bling bleck bloo.

Also a possibility. But since it deals directly with the ape-transformation, and since we have the Tsufuru-jin (a rearrangement of "furuutsu"), I decided to go with the more "brutish" pun. :)

As some extra fun info, the Blue Water GT dub calls them "Blutz waves". And "Soufles". What does the FUNi dub call them?

That's funny Blue Waters calls them "Blutz" because that's what the French dub calls them too.

B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

I just recently noticed the resemblance between "buruutsu" and "furuutsu". Only a dakuten of difference! Maybe that was Toriyama's intended pun, since there were no Tsufuru-jin in the manga.

Tsufuru-jin = Tuffles in the dub. (I think I spelt that right...)

 My Kami, you're right, I forgot there were no Tsufruians in the Manga! (Is Tsufruians the Daimao translations? I usually go by his stuff). Could I have been right... AND YOU ALL WRONG!?!?!?!?!?!?

Not trying to be arrogant... it's just that it would be a first for me.

Maybe, except for:

1/ The fact that "Brutz waves" make them, well, "brutish", and

2/ While buruutsu and furuutsu are very similar, buruutsu is even more similar to, well, "brutz".

...Liam, don't spoil my high. :-P

I know it's probably Brute rather than fruit... but with even a Julian 'kind-of-backing', I can hope.

o.O Uh, that may be part of it, but I think you missed the joke as well.

Saiyans change into giant apes by use of "Brutz" waves (Funimation calls them Blutz). And the necessary amount of Blutz waves are only reflected by a full moon.

When you flash somebody your buttocks, it's called "Mooning". And when you take out the r (or l) you end up with "Butt" waves.

*Moons Broli, changing him into a giant ape*

Okay, so we have 2 possibilities as to where the Brut/Bruit part comes from. Brute (Likely) , or Fruits (Sorta likely). But the Z? Why not S? Why a Z?

Because of Dragonball 'Z'? Was that Toriyama's manga homage to the alternate title for the anime version?

I know, who gives a damn.

Brutz waves are produced by the full moon...

"Mooning" someone means flashing your butt at them...

Add an "r" and "z" to "butt" and you get "Brutz".

Nope, sorry, seems like reaching to me. If nothing else, I don't think that Toriyama had quite that good a grasp of English slang terminology.

As to why a "Z", I'm guessing that it's just because he wanted a word that sounded like "brute", while not being exactly the same. And "Brutes waves" sounds silly (well, sillier).

Toriyama shoulda just called them Lunar Waves and been done with it. But, that's out Tori for ya. :-)

Bah, say what you like. The Mooning and Butz pun makes a lot more sence to me than "brutish waves". If that was the case he couldve called them giant ape waves.
