Re: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus - Episode 1 - Official Discussion Thread
Who would've thought that 11 years later, we'd be back here debating a Dragon Ball Super remaster?
I thought the first episode of this reboot was pretty good. They cut out a good chunk of the filler from the original episode, which, as MistareFusion rightly pointed out, is one of the weakest premiere episodes if we're only counting DB, Z, and GT.
- Didn't like the opening at all, and that's coming from someone who was never much of a fan of Chouzetsu Dynamic in the first place.
- I found the lack of background music at the beginning interesting. It gave the whole thing a more neutral atmosphere.
- Glad to see Sumitomo's tracks are still being used. I haven't really been keeping up with the news about this anime, so I was already expecting a new composer.
- Is it true that there was little to no voice acting in this episode? Not that I mind, actually. I kinda like the idea of preserving the veteran VAs' voices.
- The ending theme was kinda meh.
- So we're not getting next-episode previews anymore? Oh, bollocks...

Doesn't make sense they kept the dead VAs, let them rest in peace.
They cheaped out but people will be praising it by the brand name alone anyway as always.

The visuals are far better than they were in the original; there's no comparison. I also really liked Goku's image training against the old enemies. The pacing is a major improvement, as it seems to have covered the first two episodes, with episode 5's material likely being covered next week.
Re: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus - Episode 1 - Official Discussion Thread
Oh hey, I live.
Decided to give this another shot since I have nothing better to do and we have better topics to discuss now rather than the usual canon debates or how good Dragon Ball's story beats actually are.

I do acknowledge I am way too combative for my own good and sincerely apologize if anyone felt hurt by my past actions, though I would be lying if I said part of that wasn't triggered by what I perceive as toxic behavior coming from this forum, mainly users acting needlessly rude and/or dismissive while debating without reprimand from the admins. I will try to keep a cool head while debating this time around and try not to engage if I find a specific user's behavior reprehensible.
ANYWAY:
It has been a while since I last watched Super, a couple years, to be precise.
I am coming to this with an open mind, and I will try to be fair and enjoy my time with it.
As far as the first episode goes... It's okay, I guess.
Not particularly spectacular or engaging, the new animation quality is easily the highlight.
But everything else... Yeah, I can now remember why Super never really clicked with me.
The opening and ending themes are pretty generic, to be honest. Not that Super's were that much better, but damn, when I thought Chozetsu Dynamic! was the weakest opening Dragon Ball theme I had ever heard, Super: Beerus delivers a new low. A shame, really.
Although the pacing here is definitely not as atrocious as the original version, it's not great either. They have retained the filler scene of Beerus going after some random dinosaur meat. I see no point in this scene existing, to be honest. Beerus is already established as a formidable foe by how the Old Kaioshin is scared of him, blowing up a planet, and by the future scene of him fighting against SSJ3. I think I speak for many when I say nobody really cares about some random warrior caveman who only exists to get killed, he's more of a detriment to Beerus' threat than a compliment. Doesn't really help that they retained the bad animation from the original.
Characterization here suffers from the very same problems of Super's original version: I don't remember the original version of Battle of Gods all that well, but I don't think Chichi was regressed to a hysterical Japanese educational mother stereotype there, nor did Vegeta do his entire "I am still obsessed with beating Kakarot" speech. So, the "new and improved version of Dragon Ball's officially canon sequel" already leaves with the first impressions that it's going to regress its characters for the sake of drama, not a good first look IMHO.
The retaining of Beerus' characterization in the anime/manga version of Super instead of the Battle of Gods version is something I don't dig a lot either. He was far more interesting as a party-type mysterious character with ambiguous moral sense than an overgrown trigger-happy toddler blessed with phenomenal cosmic powers. I hate this type of character, which makes some of his lines like "I hate people who don't have any manners" come off as infuriatingly hypocritical. Dragon Ball already has/had too many characters like this, we didn't need another one.
Try as they might, no amount of good animation can fix bad storytelling.
Just my first impressions on Episode 1.

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus - Episode 1 - Official Discussion Thread
The lack if background music was the best part. It really helped give the story a naturalistic feeling and prevented the tension from being too pushed. Every time that background music was used, the experience worsened. It really upset the delicacy of the mood because Sumitomo just has no real sauce as a composer.

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus - Episode 1 - Official Discussion Thread
This was about as underwhelming as it can possibly get. I know people don't really like Super's "filler" content, but a lot of them were either funny or added to the characters. It is fun to see them just hanging out and enjoying life together instead of always being super serious. In this episode, we sacrificed Goten trying to give his sister in law a beautiful present with his best friend, and Vegeta having a trip with Bulma and Trunks for.. a minute or so of Goku image training. The only relevant thing about it was that it woke Beerus up, so I get it, it had its importance, and Cell looks as handsome as ever, but idk about you, I think what we saw in the old version was so much better. We never saw Vegeta try to act like a normal father and husband, or Goten caring so much about Videl in Z. But I'm aware this fandom doesn't really care about character stuff, all they want is super seriousness, fights and muscular men screaming their lungs out.
Speaking of that, I don't like the new opening at all. It sounds and looks like something fans would make on youtube. If you ever saw fan openings you know what i'm referring to. It just doesn't really scream Dragon Ball to me. And the ending was very underwhelming as well. The first Super ending had stunning visuals, a somewhat catchy music, and it focused on Goku's journey, ending with a shot of him, his friends and family looking at the sunset. This one is a mediocre song, and all you will see is CGI Shenron.
Many things from the episode barely looked any different from the old version. The only thing that was noticeably different was the fight between Beerus and the alien monster, who now looks like a demon with red aura because idk, it looks more badass now and that's what matters the most I guess. What ticked me off however, is that they couldn't even bother changing King Kai's voice. That's just so lazy.

I watched the episode and I enjoyed it, visually it is way better than the original and pacing is way better. It is strange that there is no next episode previous, however that is no problem. Now I know what time the episode will be on next week.
Re: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus - Episode 1 - Official Discussion Thread
The vibes of this new look Super is definitely way different than the original.
Having no narrator really makes that clear.
I enjoyed the sequence of Goku fighting past villains and Beerus waking up seemingly because of that.
Otherwise very fast paced for sure, not sure how I feel about that.
I have to see the rest of the arc to make a judgement.

+ The ToP line filter looks nice.
+ I do not miss the Trunks and Goten adventures.
+ They kept the bit where Goku agonizes over whether or not to accept the money.
+ They kept Vegeta training in the gravity room while inner monologuing about Goku.
- The colors are too desaturated.
- They cut the beginning of the 'stump as stubborn as Vegeta' gag.
- Neither the OP or ED were memorable or catchy.
- I'm just not a fan of constant callbacks to Z.
- No next episode preview. No eyecatches.
It feels like a digest version; there to remind us that Super exists. I can't call this a replacement.

Kibito and Shin are still fused, so any hopes of this connecting to Daima just went out the window. Considering this was made to streamline the Super storyline, I guess I shouldn't be surprised it doesn't require viewing a show that's under a different name.

Ummm, Daimabros? What is happening?
Why is Goku talking about that old and busted Majin Boo when the real greatest strongest enemy he's ever faced was our KING GOMAH???
Why more training too? He already has Super Saiyan 4... He doesn't need to train anymore...
Did the people making the anime make a mistake or something?

They just fused again offscreen, silly. Or maybe it was just an animation mistake and someone mixed up the Shin and Kibitoshin character sheets. Yes. I'm sure it was that. The Dark Knight wrote: Sun Oct 11, 2026 1:30 pm Kibito and Shin are still fused, so any hopes of this connecting to Daima just went out the window. But to those who did view it, it's just so freaking weird. That whole Mister Satan giving money to Goku four years after defeating Buu just became even weirder than before. Why the long wait? Why didn't Mister Satan give that money during Trunks' ninth birthday, you know, one year after Buu?The Dark Knight wrote: Sun Oct 11, 2026 1:30 pmKibito and Shin are still fused, so any hopes of this connecting to Daima just went out the window. In Dragon Ball Super, Goku says he keeps training because Buu was powerful and whatever, and yet, four years later, his strongest transformation is Super Saiyan 3. In Dragon Ball Daima, Goku says he kept training because Buu was powerful and whatever, and yet, one year later, he pulls a transformation out of a strange, probably stinky place.
Even if they did try to connect, the narrative would continue to be a mess. They really got themselves in a "damn if you do, damn if you don't" situation and it's just...
By the way, Gregory's still there. But hey, close to Toriyama's vision, I'm sure.
Re: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus - Episode 1 - Official Discussion Thread
As for the music, 2 completely new tracks were played, along with 3 from Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters, 1 from Dragon Ball Super and 1 from the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods movie.
Re: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus - Episode 1 - Official Discussion Thread
They already admitted they're using old voice clips from 2015 to make this "remake."
This is less a remake and more a re-edit like Kai.
We should wait for a proper remake to make a judgement on Daima's placement in the continuity.
If that ever happens, anyway.
For all we know, they'll try to connect Daima to Super in one of the future arcs.

Re: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus - Episode 1 - Official Discussion Thread
I'm pleased with this episode, The artwork in many places are the same but with a nice rough linework, better composition, less saturation, the face highlights were kept at a minimum, the whole direction of Beerus waking up and goku mental training (which is good, parts of the manga will be sprinkled here it seems), that one was the highlight of course, why wouldn't.
I loved the background music accompanying the fight, THE OLD SOUND BANK my god what a difference it makes, the animation and the transitions from mental to real life, showing a strong direction, I think the scene, even with nothing at stake was pretty powerful that I even got goosebumps at the end with that part of the music and when Goku was preparing his Kamehameha.
Like I said, this is good, can't go to sleep sad or angry with this episode, many things well done and not many lows, I'm hopeful that future episodes will be even better, specially in those where the animation clearly took a nosedive and a whole retake has to be made, In the original 4 episodes of super it looked good and consistent so I guess this first episode wasn't that hard to adapt, The title of the next episode says they will visit the Kaio's planet so that's where the first real fight (and what cursed DBS 2015 forever) happens.

I agree; I assume the less informed viewers are wondering why nothing from Daima is being referenced here, and things will just continue to get worse as we progress through this story.
Gregory is a Toriyama character, so it's a grey area.Grimlock wrote: Sun Oct 11, 2026 1:48 pmBy the way, Gregory's still there. But hey, close to Toriyama's vision, I'm sure.

Does anyone else think this was a weird FIRST episode? Imagine someone watching this who hasn't seen DBS or BoG. It must all feel so random and confusing. Nothing gets explained, no narrator, you barely see any characters, there's almost no dialogue, just random Beerus scenes and then Goku and Vegeta start training... end of episode.

People got the wrong idea, the series was explicitly promoted as an "Enhanced Version", it was never advertised as a remake.Kenji wrote: Sun Oct 11, 2026 1:50 pm They already admitted they're using old voice clips from 2015 to make this "remake."
