This is very unfortunate. If the people he left behind couldn't agree on a way to keep them as is, I wish the Japanese government would've bought and maintained the studio at least for historical and cultural purposes.

I hope it wasn't done maliciously. I hope it was torn down because there were outdated structural issues, or because buildings get replaced more readily in Japan and that's how it goes, or that his family wanted to build something new in its place and this was something they discussed before he passed away.
It's sad to see it get torn down, but we have limited control over what happens to our stuff, homes included, after we're dead (what you put in your will and what you don't or can't).
It still seems like even though the various parties left behind aren't fully in agreement--like Dragon Ball's business heirs are in a dysfunctional relationship with one another.
The best I can say is the house is not the memories you have of it and those memories can't be forcibly taken away from you.
Even if the next owner completely guts the house and remodels it into an ugly mini-mcmansion, or if they treat the house poorly and wreck the fence and it upsets you too see it like that, it doesn't change the time you once spent there and the memories you made.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was just too expensive to maintain, especially for the taxes of it all. It could have just been easier to tear it down and sell the property. Who would have lived there, anyway? Just Katou-sensei by herself? She's probably bought a smaller, more private place and is going to be pocketing the cash.

I just hope that any drawings, sketches, or original manuscripts he made during his career that were still there have been preserved.

Maybe they could have turned it into a commemorative museum, it would be cheaper than building a theme park in Saudi Arabia and it might even have boosted tourism in that area, but anyway, they've already tear it down.

I'm pretty sure Shueisha and Toei picked that place dry while the poor man's body was still warm.

So it's another case of "If I can't have it, nobody can"?

Absolutely heartbreaking, even if its a renovation it wouldn't seem right to do that without Toriyama's consent.

Well, today I learned that the Bird Studio building was actually built after Dragon Ball was finished, and that Toriyama himself designed it.

I can't say I share the same sentiment as most people, I don't find this that upsetting.
Buildings get destroyed all the time, the fact that he designed it doesn't matter, if the building isn't going to be used, then what purpose does it serve?
Seeing as how Toriyama was a very private person, I don't think he'd appreciate it if it was turned into a museum or something like that, but that's just my own assumption.
But either way, that might have been the studio where he worked on the art we all know and love, but that time has passed

Well nvm, seems this wasn't the building where DB was being made. Still a big loss though, but hurts less.

New information:
- Bird Studio's headquarters moved to Tokyo over the summer.
- Akio Iyoku is now on the board of directors.
- The building was located in a residential area that wasn't suitable for visitors or pilgrimages; Toriyama himself even posted a note asking people not to stop by or leave gifts there since 90's.
-Toriyama's family and heirs (for obvious reasons) have remained quiet on this matter.
