Dragonball - A Lifestyle?

Post by Snail » Wed Feb 07, 2007 4:47 am

After reading a comment from Sun_Wukong, stating that he has been a fan for nearly a decade, it had made me realize that it's the same case for me as well. This inspired me to create a topic for this.

How long have you been involved with this series?
How did it begin?
How did it affect your lifestyle?
How important is Dragonball to you?
Will you forever continue to be a die-hard fan of this huge compilation of a series?

How long have you been involved with this series?

Since it was in syndication in the US but I wasn't a hardcore fan until it got a weekday spot on CN.

How did it begin?

Some friends told me to watch it and I did one morning. I didn't really get into it at the time but it was still pretty cool.

How did it affect your lifestyle?

It made me think more about censorship in the US and it helped keep my interest in martial arts that was somewhat fading at the time.

How important is Dragonball to you?

Important enough to dedicate an entire large shelf in my living room to Dragonball stuff.

Will you forever continue to be a die-hard fan of this huge compilation of a series?

It comes and goes. Right now is a very exciting time for Dragonball and that's why I'm paying attention to it.

You know, I made a thread like this way back, so I'll just copy my some of my answers:
Mr.Piccolo wrote: It was the summer of 1997(?) at my cousin's house in South Jersey. I wake up to something strange: my cousins screaming that "DBZ" is on. Needless I was basically forced watch. It was giving the episode where Chaozu sacrificed himself. This was on Channel 11, WPIX (look it up), so it’s understood this was the worst time to get into the show. I was so damn confused: How come this dude with three eyes can survive with one arm and how come this kid 'travels' through dimensions again and again. From that one episode I hated the show. That's right, Mr. Piccolo hated DBZ.

That is until it aired in Toonami (Cartoon Network). I caught the episodes when Piccolo fought Freeza. That really brought me into the series. That is also why I'm a Piccolo fan. From there with the help of some other fans and the internet, I got more information on the series and learned the truth so to speak...And the rest was history.(I don't know if it is just me or usually the people that introduce you to DBZ get out of it before you do..?)
*How did it affect your lifestyle? After experiencing DragonBall, I’ve come to enjoy different forms of story telling and different types of art styles.
*How important is Dragonball to you?I think it's pretty important. I hope to publish a story one day and DragonBall (Toriyama actually) is one of my main influences.
*Will you forever continue to be a die-hard fan of this huge compilation of a series?I really hope so. People change, but I hope this is something I hold on to for years to come.

How long have you been involved with this series?

August of '98 -- about 8.5 years

How did it begin?

I was randomly flipping channels when I came across it on Cartoon Network. Instant hookage.
Something about this huge bald dude (Nappa) owning everyone in sight had me riveted and wanting more. :D

How did it affect your lifestyle?

Well, it's made me realize that I am a huge nerd. I've been overly obsessed and have spent an assload of money on it.

How important is Dragonball to you?

More than it ought to be, haha. It's actually one of my only interests.

Will you forever continue to be a die-hard fan of this huge compilation of a series?

Yeah, I like the characters too much to ever not be a fan. Go me.

I watched the original DragonBall dub in what, 1995? So, 12 years just about (wow, half my life...scary).
How did it begin?
The local network was showing DragonBall at the ass-crack of dawn, and I woke up one Saturday and caught it. Later on, they switched to DBZ and I watched that until Sabat and Co. took over. That was about the time I got into the internet (1999, methinks) and discovered the original Japanese.
How did it affect your lifestyle?
Well, it was the first anime I watched in Japanese. First video games I imported (UB22, Legends). First DVD's I imported (DragonBoxes). So a bit of an impact.
How important is Dragonball to you?
It's got sentimental value. I love the show, but I'm not obsessive (despite my purchases that might make people think otherwise).
Will you forever continue to be a die-hard fan of this huge compilation of a series?
I hope so, I've spent quite a bit of my hard-earned money on it over the years :P

How long have you been involved with this series?

I was an in-between animator from '93 to '95. :P

Sorry, couldn't resist. Hard to imagine, but close to a decade now.

How did it begin?

Had to get up early for church one Sunday, had a local Fox affiliate on my TV, and saw a recap of the second or third dub episode. There was a green guy missing an arm who had sparks flying out of his other hand's fingertips, so naturally, I was intrigued.

How did it affect your lifestyle?

Quite a bit. I found myself becoming a major fan of anime and manga, my interest in the internet increased (thanks in part to DBZ: Uncensored), and more importantly, I became fascinated with Japanese culture. Oh, and it's managed to take close to two grand of my money over the years.

How important is Dragonball to you?

Very. I will always love the series simply because it changed me personally.

Will you forever continue to be a die-hard fan of this huge compilation of a series?

It's been that way for 10 years...can't imagine it ending anytime soon. Over the years, my obsession has calmed a bit, though I still love to watch episodes, listen to the music from the series, play the video games, and even reread the manga.

Summer of 2000, so I guess 6 and a half years.
How did it begin?
Coming off of pkmn after being disenchanted by the third season and looking for a new series. DB was my rebound show. XD
How did it affect your lifestyle?
I'm a much better writer/artist because of it, and its' gotten me into other shows.
How important is Dragonball to you?
It's got great nostalgic value for me. :3

I'll always be a fan. I'm not hardcore like I was back when the Buu eps hadn't been dubbed yet and were floating about the internet in sub form, but it's always got a place on my shelf. :)
On hiatus.

Hmmmm. Might as well...

How long have you been involved with this series?

About... 4 or 5 years, maybe?

How did it begin?

I remember the first time I actually seriously watched the series was when the Buu arc was first kicking off. It was SSj3 Goku vs. Fat Buu that hooked me. Plus, I soon discovered that DragonBall Z stuff was a blast to draw.

How did it affect your lifestyle?

I'm probably more of a nerd for it...

How important is Dragonball to you?

It's a hobby, really. Just like drawing, and writing, and gaming, and collecting Spider-Man action figures... But a big hobby, nonetheless.

Will you forever continue to be a die-hard fan of this huge compilation of a series?

Definitely. Though my "fervor" for it will most likely wear off as I get older, DragonBall will remain one of my favorite series of all time. I'll probably end up introducing my kids to it the same way my mom and dad introduced me to some of their favorite old shows like Star Trek and George of the Jungle.

Ah, the god-forbidden Johto season. Ditto (the term, not the pokemon), in fact. Pokemon was what got me started on anime, as well.

How long have you been involved with this series?

I want to say since sometime in 1997. Whenever the episodes of Z started to be aired on Toonami. I just remember I was 6 at that time and the warning label at the top said for ages 7+

How did it begin?

One day while watching cartoons I heard these commercials airing but after watching the show for a few minutes changed the channel. But the next day saw this show was still on so decided to continue to watch it. It was the second episode of Z then. I decided the show was pretty cool and stuck with it. My friends also liked it so that was a plus for me.

How did it affect your lifestyle?

I became such a fan of the show, but nothing serious. I just watched all the episodes on TV and kinda lied to all the other people who said the show was stupid.

How important is Dragonball to you?

Very important. Just about all the forums I go to daily have something to do with Dragonball. I'd die if someone stole all of my Dragonball merchandise.

Will you forever continue to be a die-hard fan of this huge compilation of a series?

Hopefully. I mean, I'd like to get into game design and work with companies that produce DBZ games and stuff, along with other titles. And even though I'm not much of a fan of the anime, I certainly want to collect all of the (uncensored) manga. Which will require learning Japanese...

Hmm, it's 2007 now and I first watched a fan sub when I was 5 in '97, so...this is my 10 year I guess.
How did it begin?
My cousin Steve (who was around 12 or so at the time) came over with these CDs with some Japanese cartoon called Dragonball Z.
How did it affect your lifestyle?
Since then I've been in love with anime and manga. I've even got some of my family to recognize even non DBZ characters.
How important is Dragonball to you?
Even though it is just a comic, It's a big part (and still is) of my childhood.
Will you forever continue to be a die-hard fan of this huge compilation of a series?
I wouldn't say I'll always be a "die-hard" fan, but even when I have my own kids and such, I'll still at least read, if not watch it too. Maybe I'll actually be in Japan by then.

How long have you been involved with this series?

Well, I think around 1998, I think I was in seventh grade.

How did it begin?

A friend of mine was a big fan. He had DBZ stickers on one of his binders and he always use to draw characters from the show. He was a half Chinese half Caucasian and his mom often brought him to Chinatown (in New York) were he would get bootleg DBZ tapes. I never really paid that much attention to it though until another friend of mine told me about this crazy cartoon that was on cartoon network. He came over one day and we watched it. It was some episode from the Vegeta saga. I remember joking about Vegeta's huge forehead. I even drew silly pictures of him with a massively exaggerated forehead. It's funny now because Vegeta is my favorite character. Well anyway I was hooked since then. I even started trading tapes with my Chinese friend. I also went to planetnamek.com everyday until it closed.

How did it affect your lifestyle?

A lot actually. I always use to draw. But my interest was fading. DBZ sparked new life into it and now I am a art school graduate. I have also spent a crap load of money on DBZ stuff. I have the whole super battle collection, a ton of DBZ video games, including the three on ps1, in Japanese. I have the entire DBZ viz manga series and two original Japanese manga volumes. A bunch of t shirts, which I don't wear anymore because they are either tattered or I got way too skinny for them. I have also gotten into voice acting. I also have a ton of tapes, professional and bootleg. I have every episode on CD in real format. And I have a lot of the episodes on tape(3 for 20 bucks, what a rip!). I have every movie except I didn't buy movie 10(boring waste of time, IMO) or 11, but I have 11 in bootleg form. I even played and beat Castor Troy's DBZ game for the o.h.r.r.p.g.c.e., which actually made me familiar with the engine which has grown and grown(it's now quite professional), and I am now hard at work on my own game. And I plan on getting all of the new season sets. I got the first one and i am really enjoying it.

How important is Dragonball to you?

It's not my highest priority in life, but I really love the show and it does mean a lot to me.

Will you forever continue to be a die-hard fan of this huge compilation of a series?

I love the show, and I love talking about it. Sometimes my interest fades, but something always seems to re-spark it.

Interesting note. I bought DBZ Taiketsu on game boy advance and returned it the same day. I only bought it because no one had reviewed it. lol.

How long have you been involved with this series?
Nearly 11 years, started watching November of 1996.
How did it begin?
I was 6 and woke up to watch Saturday morning cartoons. It was around 6 or 7 AM EST (in New York), and I the first episode I saw was the one where Jeice and Burter were just flying around trying to hit Goku, but he was moving really fast and they couldn't.
How did it affect your lifestyle?
Got me into anime, and I also woke up earlier every Saturday to watch it. Became a fan of the series, but couldn't really purchase much stuff, since I'm poor and my parents won't spend money on DVDs.
How important is Dragonball to you?
Well, it's tied as my favorite anime, and nowadayws, it's probably more of a factor in my daily activiites than before. Like I try to find out about new game releases, DVD releases, other stuff.
Will you forever continue to be a die-hard fan of this huge compilation of a series?
Can't say for sure, but I think I may become even more obsessed as I grow older and can afford to start hording merchandsie of the franchise.

How long have you been involved with this series?
8-9 years

How did it begin?
I caught the first 13 DragonBall episodes that aired on YTV in the early 90s. After that the most I saw about it was by guys at my school wearing sweaters with super saiyans on them, and cards and stuff. Then the next time it really, truly, began was when DragonBall Z was being aired, and I was instantly hooked once I realized Goku had grown up and had a kid and wife now. I saw Piccolo and Raditz and how ALIEN they were and well... how could anyone help getting obsessed!?

How did it affect your lifestyle?
Lifestyle? What lifestyle... I didn't even begin to LIVE until I was exposed to DragonBall. After that, it was like my eyes were opened... I formed emotions and feelings that I had never had before... Piccolo was my first CRUSH!! DragonBall DEFINED me. Everything about DB changed me. I had no personality before, I was such a gossip/popularity queen, I was so shallow, but once I began to watch DBZ, I forgot all about that. I got totally different friends, I did totally different things. I looked at everything a different way because of DBZ. Even now, almost 10 years later, it's still a part of me.

How important is Dragonball to you?
I love it so much, it's incredibly important to me. I can't imagine not talking about it or being able to watch it. I'm afraid of people not loving it anymore, or a time when it'll be difficult to find merchandise for it...... Hell, it's so important I don't think I could handle any romance with someone if they didn't like it too. I just love it so much, they'd have to too. What else... well I just want it to be a part of my life forever.

No idea. 6, 7 years maybe.

How did it begin?
Ocean's Saiyan Saga. I don't remember when, but I know I watched all the episodes in order.

How did it affect your lifestyle?
I guess it made it better? (lol)

How important is Dragonball to you?
It's one of my favorite TV shows. Maybe not my all-time favorite, but it's up there.

I suspect so, yes.

How long have you been involved with this series?

Since the first episode of Dragon Ball Z aired on YTV in..95 or 96? 11 years! :D I watched Pokemon at the same time, and loved it, but in my mind, I just enjoyed Dragon Ball a lot better.

How did it begin?

Me and many of my friends loved the show. Note that I was about 6 years old when I started to watch it, and I knew the most about the show out of all of them. They liked it, but I'd memorize names, planets, episodes, quotes...I was obsessed. I think YTV re-ran the Ocean/FUNi dub about three times until they finally continued with the "new" Ginyu episodes.

How did it affect your lifestyle?

Well, I've spent a fair amount of money on the series. I want to learn Japanese because of it, and I am into anime because of this series.

How important is Dragonball to you?

Very important. It's my favourite television show of all time, MAYBE second only to the masterpiece that is The Simpsons  .

Will you forever continue to be a die-hard fan of this huge compilation of a series?

For sure. For the rest of my life, I know that Dragon Ball is not a "phase" in my life. I know that merchandise will never stop, and I hope that somthing "big" comes really soon. New movie? Digitally re-animate an episode or two? It could happen.
