A non-videophile's take on the season 1 set

Post by Sun_Wukong » Mon Feb 12, 2007 5:22 pm

Since most of the reviews have been from people who seem to only care about the techincal aspects, here's my take on it, without the video jargan.

Presentation: I personally didnt like the box or the scheme they had for it and the disks. I just thought it was ugly and too simple. I was hoping they couldve at least used some of the newer art that's been surfacing over the past few years, or even possibly, dare I say it, the Dragonbox covers. The booklet is also sloppy, it was obviously not checked for errors. The Dvd menus also look like they put no time into them. The same image from the box.

Audio: The dub with the original music is really nice. Though the music seems to overpower the voices and vice versa at times. The original Japanese dub is also great, with fantastic subs. I bought the set soely for the fact that I had never seen these episodes uncut, or in Japanese. My only complaint about the English audio is they left a few of the awful Ocean Group lines in.

Video: I'm not going to complain much about the video. The colors looked really nice and sharp compared to the Toonami brodcast I was used to. I did notice a bit of scratches and grain, but it didnt bother me. Really the only thing that bothered me about the video was when the picture itself would actually move during a fight or a fast scene. The cropping wasnt noticable all the time, if I wasnt already looking for the certian cropped scenes members had pointed out, I probably wouldnt have noticed them.

Extras: Not too thrilled about them. I really wish Funi would learn, trailers for their other titles dont count as extras. Nor do character profiles.

All in all the set really isnt that bad. Not perfect by any means, but I enjoyed it. Id give it a 6 out of 10.[/b]

Yeah, I forgot to mention about the "jitters" in my review. They could've fixed that by devoting some time to the remastering. Evangelion fixed the problem, why not DBZ? [Probably has to do with the fact Eva is 26 episodes, and DBZ is 291...] That and they couldn't even manage to clean up scratches...

[OK... enough with my bitching and moaning...]

Nice review, Sun_Wukong. Since your criteria and concerns for the set seem to match mine, would it be okay if I posted my review on your thread here sometime tomorrow?

I suprisingly got the set as a "gift" today & after watching the first 10 episodes, I'd have to agree with you. At least my mind is calm over all the talk about it. In the end, I'd still prefer the fullscreen. I'd give it about a solid C for being a decent set.

Why the hell do we need another thread? Can't you just add it to another?

This thread seems to be for those who aren't going to dig uber-deep into the technical aspects of the set.

As if "videophile" is a bad thing. While I understand not everyone is looking for technical reviews, this is the same guy who called us "nerds" in the other thread for giving them. So apparently, this is the version for morons.

Son Wukong's the average Joe. What's so wrong about that? We need a couple of Joes on the forums. Too much ...'nerdiness' can be considered a bad thing.

Anyways, nice review. I still haven't bought the set yet (Don't...have...money!), but it does sound nice (once you get past the cropping and artifacts everywhere, that is)

Seeing all of these reviews is quite nice actually. I like reading intelligible (whether they're for videophiles or morons) review's for "that orange thing"

But imo, EX should just get it over with, and make a section entirely for it, and leave it there for a few months or so... Because there ARE a lot of threads, but then people putting their reviews into another review thread is almost redundant in a way, if it were in another section, people can just make they're own thread.

Basically, it's crowded in the "General Discussion" section with threads on "the orange thing" :D

The problem with being an Average Joe is that you're average. The review is nothing special, and it was done by a guy who apparently thinks that being too smart or too attentive to detail is a bad thing.

Dude, just let them have this thread. It says in the title that this is from the perspective of non-videophiles, so we really have no business butting in with technical jargon. Just let this be the definitive spot for positive discussion of the box set, since Wukong obviously made this thread to escape the bitch-fest everywhere else.

Yeah yeah, I'm shutting up now. But you can't really expect a dignified response for your opinions when you flat-out dismiss other people's.

This is the only review I've actually read of this set. No offense, but all of the other reviews were longwinded in my opinion, in the sense that they were just pages of discussion based on things I've never heard of. Let me put it this way; it's like when the guy in the newspaper reviews a movie, a movie that you later watch and thoroughly enjoy, and the guy gives it a 1/5 because of parting shots or framing or camera angles or some nonsense.

You see what I'm saying?

Hm, should've been more clear, then. How about:

"Hi pot, this is kettle! What's up?"

Or:

"And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?"

Look, I really dont care if you insult me. So you might as well stop before you get in over your head. I did this review as a dragonball fan. Not as a home theater expert, as everyone suddenly seems to be

While I mean you no disrespect, visual acuity that enables people to see blatant problems with a video stream does not a "home theatre expert" make. Hell, with all my knowledge I still don't term myself an expert.

And now I'll leave your thread alone.
