Jakks dropping DBZ license ... is this the end?

Post by Namek'jin Ryu » Thu Feb 15, 2007 5:07 pm

You read the topic title correctly! Strait from Jakks Pacific, they have recently verified that this will definately be their last year with the DragonBall Z toy license. This year, 2007, will be their last.

So the questions I have are: Who do you think will pick up the license? Which company do you prefer to continue this run? Will they be able to fulfill the list of never before made figures that Irwin & Jakks failed to do?

Read more here;
The End of Jakks

*Haha, Jakks is saying that it will be hard for anyone to make better figures then them. *Hump*...please!

-------------------------------

I don't know if this is big enough news to go on the Podcast, but I think it would be awesome to see what others think, that being those that only listen to the Podcast.

I am split right down the middle on feelings. Half of me is glad Jakks is letting go of the license because lets face it, they suck, yet the other half of me is wondering if our DragonBall Z collections are drawing closer to their demise?!? I know new toys will always be coming available from different contries, but I hope you all get what I'm trying to get at with that.

From the recent topics I've created (2) lately, you can probably tell I'm a huge fan of DragonBall Z Action Figures. I mean what can last longer besides pictures? :-P Here's to hoping some toy company that has amazed people in the past with figures, picks up the license.

Personally, I'd love Irwin to pick it up again. Their figures were the best.

Seriously. Bring back Chibi Trunks with a bazooka. That's quality right there.

I loved Irwin's figures. I was disappointed once the rights switched over to Jakks. Toynami has done some awesome stuff! They did the InuYasha line, as well a distributing some Japanese Bleach figures. Their Collector's Editions of the Naruto statues are also incredible! I'd love to see Toynami do some DBZ stuff!

I don't know too much about toys but my little brother had quite a collection a while ago. Which ever line of toys that had Trunks with a bazooka; my brother had a lot of those. The only ones that are still around are Super Buu, Buu Arc Vegeta, and I believe Krillin in the Buu Arc. Tsk tsk, toys in my household aren't meant to be collections. They are inevitably destroyed.

I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

Thank god!

Their figures were nothing but complete trash. The only good thing they did was release the japanese figures here a couple years back.

I would say Hasbro should get distribution rights with Toybiz manufacturing the figures ala Marvel Legends or at the very least release the japanese figures made by Bandai.

Oh and I thought Irwin went bankrupt? Its too bad, the figures they were making were pretty solid. They also released a good chunk of the Super Battle Collection here, which is how I got the majority of those figures. :P

Jakks dropped the ball big time on the liscense. I hope someone like Macfarlane Toys gets it. Though hell will probably freeze over before that happens.

Please give the license to Bandai. Re-releases of the Super Battle Collection with the original packaging. It could happen! Who thought that the Hit Song Collections would be released in 2006?

Why would they re-release the Super Battle Collection for uh... the fourth time?

I like the idea of an all new Super Battle Collection, exclusive to America ;)

My two Super Battle Collection Gokus look like they were picked off one of the desks at Toei's studios. X3
I would welcome any future releases of this series, even though the Suncoast I'd normally get them from no longer exists.
On hiatus.

Why wouldn't they?

Like I said, it's pretty similar to the whole Hit Song Collection thing. A lot of fans wanted the CDs, but they are out of print. So, let's keep milking the DB fans! Since the SBC wasn't truly released in North America (very small print, crappy boxes), it would be cool to introduce 43 really nicely made action figures with sexy boxes to North Americans!

I'm not sure on whether that would make my entire (save for one) SBC's value go up because they're the originals, or down, because America just put out cheap knock-offs :P

Oh well... if any SBC is re-released, it should be only a few figures, and then NEW one's. That rumor that there were going to be new Dragonball (not Z) Super Battle Collection figures coming out drove me crazy, and now I want new SBC figures... :D

I thought I'd never feel this way about DragonBall/Z/GT figures again. Mainly because Jakks Pacific shot down every last hope I had had for their figures last year. This years Toy Fair didn't impress me much either. A couple of good figures I'll get, but nothing more then that.

I kind of feel like a little kid at Christmas. This time I just hope it isn't another let down. What I mean is when Irwin-Toy went bankrupt I was saddened, but when I heard Jakks was picking up the license I was glad because their Wrestling line impressed me. When Jakks started coming out with figures, I was jubilantly happy. Little did I know that happiness wouldn't last long, for once they ran out of Irwin-Toy prototypes, they started making their own figures and made a complete fool of themselves. Switching from the 5" scale to 7" was a total turnoff for me. Although I continued to collect, because, heck, back then I didn't know better. At the time I figured the characters in the Anime just grew taller.

About Irwin-Toy going bankrupt; a year or two back I was interested in finding out what became of Irwin-Toy. And to my surprise, they were back in business. Not taking up anything big, but they were still there as a company. As a matter of fact go to their website if you are one that needs solid proof like me: Irwin Toy.

Now onto what I think has been the greatest idea mentioned yet! To have Bandai pick up the license and start making figures. Not to re-release the Super Battle Collection because some of us have all of those already and it would basically just be like FUNimation who has been giving us the same stuff, edited in different ways. But for Bandai to give us American's our own Super Battle Collection line. Completely different from the Japanese one. Heck, they could even go all out and try to please everyone. For example: Those of us that have already gotten the 43 previous Super Battle Collection figures they could start with Vol. 43, yet at the same time for those who weren't fortunate enough to get those, they could make another like that started at Vol. 00. But have them follow each other as far as figures. Another example that may make it easier to understand: Vol. 43: Bardock and Vol. 00: Bardock

Heh, like I mentioned earlier in the topic, I'm a hardcore DragonBall Z action figure collector. So, pardon me if I rambled because when it comes to figures I sometimes do that.

Well, DBZ figures around here are pretty scarce, so this doesn't affect me in that sense. However, I am glad that JAKKS is stopping after this last line of releases, since... their interpretation of DBZ characters is less than desired.

As for what I'd like in the future, I definitely wouldn't want a re-re-release of the SBCs, since I'm under the impression that the ones I've got would lower in value (not that I'm planning on selling them; hell I can't even find them right now). I'd much prefer a release of stuff from whoever did the figures before JAKKS (Bandai?). Either that, or the type of figures I've seen being released for Naruto and Bleach in the US. They've got a good amount of toys meant for playing as well as ones just for display.

I hope to god that whoever the hell does the American Naruto figures (Mattel... or was it Playskool? XD) DOES NOT pick up DBZ!

I haven't seen any of them in person, but just browsing through them on Toywiz made me cringe. They do ok clothes, but they completely ruin the faces, and proportioning isn't too great.

I say it's going to be Bandai, since they haven't really been doing anything save for 3" figurines, and black and white re-releases.

I expect them to finish up the Ultimate Figure's with the latest color figure's put out in black and white, and then I'm pretty sure they'll pick up where Jakks left off. I'm pretty sure if they do go the route of an American Super Battle Collection, or something similar, it will most likely be for a higher price, then say the general action figures for the real market of kids who actually play with them lol. Kinda similar when Irwin and FUNi did the IF Labs stuff.

I'm hoping for Playmates. They did great stuff with both TMNT releases, adn their Star Trek figures are among the best action figures from any franchise I've seen. They do great, relevant accessories, good modelling, and good points of articulation.

Which brings me to why I hate what Jakks did. Irwin too. All the DBZ Figures I've ever seen had hardly any points of articulation, which makes it hard to have a decent martial arts fight with them. Jakks also does this to their wrestling figures. It's hard to replicate complex holds when your figures only rotate at the shoulders , the hips, and spin at the neck. A few of the Jakks wrestling figures will have hinge elbows too, but none have socket shoulders or hips, which would make it much easier to do moves like the Sharpshooter with them. Not that Hasbro or LJN were any better. The LJN figures were solid rubber! and the Hasbro figures had one special action, and weren't good for anything else.

But, I'm getting off topic here. Back to DBZ Figures. Playmates would be great! Thy could be done like the more recent TMNT figures, with socket shoulders and hips, bending elbows, and rotating wrists and neck. They should also add bending knees. Or, they could be done like the Star Trek figures.

If Playmates doesn't get it, then I hope someone else decent does.

I'd like to see DBZ figures with real cloth clothes that can be changed, so we don't need 37 varieties of Goku. You could just buy one Goku figure, and a set of clothes for him. Mego did this with their Star Trek figures back in the 70's, and those are some of the best action figures ever.

Probably the best figures, when it comes to articulation, were the He Man figures of the 80's. With rubber band hips, a spinning waist, hinge knees, rotating head, and ball & socket shoulders, all that's missing is a rotating wrist and bending elbows. I'd love to see DBZ figures done like this with changeable clothes, and relevant accessories. Bulma could have a Dragon Radar, Chibi-Goku could get the Power Pole, Vegita a scouter, the possibilities are...well...rather limited. But it's better than Chibi Trunks with a Bazooka, or SSJ Goku with a hover sled. The only problem with the He-Man figures was how hard it is to pose them. They don't like to stand up by themselves.

Finally, I wouldn't mind seeing DBZ figures done like GI Joe and The CORPS figures. These guys have great articulation, and make better wrestling figures than any wrestling figures I've ever had. They are great with martial arts fights too. They are a bit fragile, though. Most of my CORPS figures have very loose joints, and some are missing arms and legs at the knees and elbows. The plastic used in them is too brittle, I think, and doesn't like to bend.

Are you collecting, or playing with them? Forget "5UP3r 1337 4R71KewL4ShUN". I just want them to look good... they don't look so hot when they have joint's and balls, and screws, and pivot's and pulley's sticking out of every nook and cranny.
And interchangeable clothes?? What do you want, an action figure, or a doll? The occasional removable shirt/vest/armor is nice, but come on, real cloth wouldn't make it look anything like an action figure; there's nothing wrong with collecting a bunch of versions of one character, otherwise we'll have a Vol. 00!! Goku, with every Barbie-styled accessory out there...

This is all just preference though... don't mind me. ;)
