Attack Names in Games - English vs Japanese

Post by Casual Matt » Sun Feb 18, 2007 1:45 pm

Simply because I'm cuious to the actual names of the attacks in the games, here's a thread dedicated to showing what they are actually called in the Japanese version. I will edit this first post with a list of attacks (expanding when I think of more or get more in) from Budokai 1, 2, 3, Tenkaichi, and Tenkaichi 2. What I want from people here is the romanized Japanese names of the attacks from DBZ 1, 2, 3, Sparking, and Sparking Neo. I want romanizations and not translations. The exception being when the attack actually uses English words, such as Big Bang Attack. This should be fairly simple since the attack names are all written in the pause menus. Post any additions or corrections you may hame here.

Most of these use Katakana, so it's pretty easy to Romanize them and find out their origin. (I found the names in a Budokai 3 strategy guide at a Japanese Website that I used to visit a while ago.)

Break Cannon - Bureiku Kyanon (Break Cannon)
Bomber DX - Derakkusu Bonba (Deluxe Bomber)
Burning Slash - Baningu Surasshu (Burning Slash)
Buster Cannon - Basuta Kyanon (Buster Cannon)
Death Ball - Desu Boru (Death Ball)
Death Beam - Desu Bimu (Death Beam)
Death Wave - Desu Uebu (Death Wave)
Double Buster - Daburu Basuta (Double Buster)
The Tori-bot wrote:Light Grenade - Chobakuretsumaha
The site I went to had stated that it's 激烈光弾, which romanizes into Gekiretsu Kodan, instead of the Bakuretsu Maha that Piccolo Daimao used.

Edit- Piccolo Jr. might've used Bakuretsu Maha, though. But 激烈光弾 was definitely used in the Japanese version of the game.

Edit 2 - Here's more

Here's more:

Body Change - Bodi Chenji (Body Change)
Energy Field - Enerugi Firudo (Energy Field)
Fuse with Kami - Kami to Yugo (Fuse with God)( :P )
Hercule Special - Satan Supesharu (Satan Special)
High Tensioin - Hai Tenshen Jotai (High Tension Mode/State)
Life Drain - Dorein Raifu (Drain Life)
Milky Cannon - Miruki Kyanon (Milky Cannon)
Perfect Form - Kanzentai
Power Blitz - Pawa Burittsu (Power Blitz)
Present For You - Purezento Bo Yu (Present For You)
Second Form - Dai Ni Keitai
Special Fighting Pose - Supesharu Faitingu Pozu (Special Fighting Pose)
Super Dragon Fist - Ryu Ken (without the "super", which was added by Atari for unknown reason)
Sync With Nail - Neiru to Doka
Unlock Potential - Senzai Noryoku Kaiho (Liberization of Hidden Power?)

Yeah, in all the DBZ games I can think of where Piccolo has that attack, it's written (and in games like Final Bout, actually spoken aloud) as "Gekiretsukodan".

Super Vegeta - ???
In the anime (and possibly Budokai 1), didn't he just call himself 'Super Vegeta'? I'm guessing you could count that.

Here's another.

Father-Son Kamehameha - Oyako Kamehameha

Here's more for you:

100% Final Form - 100% Furu Pawa Jotai (100% Full-Power Mode)
Final Form - Saishu Keitai
Rocket Punch - Roketto Panchi (Rocket Punch)
Super Perfect Form - Cho Kanzentai
Supernova - Supa Nova (Super Nova)

Currently looking for the original Budokai strategy on that Japanese site...hmm...Error 404... I'll be back for more.

Well, I'd want to know the Japanese name of the actual capsule.

P.S. Thanks to everybody for the help thus far.

Due to me owning that wretched game, and you reminding me, I will now have Piccolo reciting that name all night in my head...thanks.

I've noticed that in BT2, some of the moves are romanjinized. Are they the romanji forms of the original moves, or new ones for the american?

Here's one I've wondered about: Kid Buu's "Warp Kamehameha." I'm pretty sure that isn't also "shunkan-idou Kamehameha." What is the Japanese name of that move and would there be a better translation?

And what about Kid Buu's "Vanashing Ball"? Is it's Japanese name still "Chikyuu Hokai no Ichigeki", or did they shorten it to something else(if not, then Vanishing Ball isn't a very accurate translation)?

It is still Shunkan Ido Kamehameha in the Japanese version. Also in the Japanese version, the Katakana for "Vanishing Ball", "Banishingu Boru" was used. It is 100% safe to assume that Vanishing Ball is the correct translation.

Or "Burnishing Ball". "Vanish" sounds the best in the context because the victim would "vanish", or "banished" to the Other World. Arrgh!! I don't know!!! :x

I'm 99.9% sure Continuous Kamehameha was Renzoku Kamehameha, and Zanku Fist was Zankuken.

Question: I see Buu's teleport Kamehameha as Warp Kamehameha, but what about Goku's? Should it be Warp Kamehameha or Instant Kamehameha or Instant Transmittion Kamehameha?

I have a quick question dealing with attacks in the series: What exactly does the term(s) 'Renzoku Energy Dan' mean and also, who can preform this? Is this just a standard series of ki blasts? Sorry if this is a bit off topic..

Strange, I could've swore when I played DBZ 3 the text for the two super moves was different. And it doesn't make any sense at all for it to be called "Shunkan-idou Kamehameha" because Buu doesn't teleport at all when doing the move...

Check this out:

Renzoku Energy Dan means "Continuous Energy Bullet" and is performed by just about anybody who is able to use ki blasts. It is just a rapid-fire ki blast attack.
