DragonBall Z: Season 2 Box Set Thread.

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Fri Feb 23, 2007 12:58 pm

So, just like the season 1 box set, I think there should be a place to plop all our season 2 ... stuff.

Today Amazon.com has posted a synopsis of season 2...

"Dragon Ball Z - Season Two includes the complete Namek saga, first time on DVD and the Captain Ginyu saga - 35 episodes on 6 discs!

Having suffered heavy losses in the battle with the Saiyans, and with Goku still recovering from his injuries, the remaining Z-fighters must embark on a perilous journey to Planet Namek in search of the Namekian Dragon Balls. Unbeknownst to them however, a powerful new enemy has set his sights on the same prize - the ruthless tyrant Frieza!

Beset on all sides by danger, Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma must fight for their lives as they struggle to keep the Dragon Balls from falling into evil hands. Meanwhile, Goku races against time to join his friends in their quest, but waiting for him on Planet Namek is an army of the most powerful villains the universe has ever known, led by Frieza's most elite fighting unit - the unstoppable Ginyu force!"

Thats kinda funny, I figured the Ginyu stuff would fall into the Frezza box set. Oh well. Another thing was that Amazon.com is using that same "temp" box art.

Thanks for the heads up. IMO, they should've ended Season One with Vegeta leaving Earth. That way, Season two could have more episodes and season one's last episode would seem more "epic".

I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

I will buy at least up to Season 3. Season 1-3 are my favorite seasons of all time in the whole series (Dragonball included).

35 episodes are nothing to complain about.
If challenge had a taste, you'd be quite delicious.

Let's see... 35 episodes... that means this set will end with ep. 74 where Ginyu turns into a frog. That means Season 3 will more than likely be the entire Freeza arc and possibly the Garlic Jr. arc.

As for the boxart, doesn't anyone think it would look a little better if Goku was just a tad smaller, so you can see more of the drawing that way? I think it wouldn't look so... screencap-ish (Yeah, I made up a new word) that way.

Well my guess would be along the lines of this, and would be quite acceptable I think:
001 - 039 Dragon Ball Z Season 1: Vegeta Saga = 39
040 - 074 Dragon Ball Z Season 2: Namek Saga = 35
075 - 107 Dragon Ball Z Season 3: Freeza Saga = 33
108 - 134 Dragon Ball Z Season 4: Android Saga = 27 (Garlic Jr. arrives)
135 - 165 Dragon Ball Z Season 5: Cell Saga 1 = 31 (Vegeta fight #18 )
166 - 194 Dragon Ball Z Season 6: Cell Saga 2 = 29 (Cell Games saga)
195 - 227 Dragon Ball Z Season 7: Buu Saga 1 = 33 (Gohan goes to Highschool)
228 - 258 Dragon Ball Z Season 8: Buu Saga 2 = 31 (Vegeta becomes Majin)
259 - 291 Dragon Ball Z Season 9: Buu Saga 3 = 33 (Buu enters the Room of Spirit and Time)

Quoting many is research.

I can't wait to see their reasons for the "widescreen justification".

I think it was somthing like, they wanted to appeal to the younger audience as well as hardcore fans...or somthing. I dont know the exact words though.

Not me, I actually find them entertaining and interesting to watch. To me, the Marron and Chichi getting pissed things are fun, while Gohan, Piccolo, and Kuririn getting the spotlight in the battle against Garlic Jr. has some fantastic action moments. Heck, there's also the Vegeta in space scenes we get, showing us his hunt for Goku while wiping out some of the Planet Trade empire. Overall, it helps things for me that I consider DBZ movie 1 canon with the anime.

I wonder how much dialogue-redubbing they're planning on doing for Season 3 for the japanese music track..?

Do you think it'll be just choice lines or the whole thing as it was one of their first attempts with their own local VA's.
On hiatus.

Well, apparently Kyle Hebert's confirmed that they're going as far as redubbing the Ginyu saga episodes for the Japanese music track from the ground up rather than choice lines like Vegeta's "Kayoken". This is probably because of how much different the VAs sound in those first 7 or so episodes compared to the Vegeta/Namek saga redub (Vegeta trying to imitate Brian Drummond to a very weird result, some of the characters having different VAs, etc.). I can see the dub w/t broadcast music appearing very awkward with how FUNi synched those episodes.

Also, yeah, there'll definitely be some redubbing for the Freeza saga episodes in the Japanese music track, if anything just to put the up-to-date VAs over their certain characters and fix any worth-touching (To FUNimation) errors as they've mentioned.

Is this how you see FUNi breaking it up or is this how the JPN broke the series down?

Cuz except for the Freeza and Cell and Buu final battles, nothing really spectacular happens at the end of some of these seasons. Maybe I'm just to westernised in my thinking of season finalies.

The release date is certainly official, as announced on the DBZ website by FUNi themselves - May 22nd indeed.

$49.98? Why are we paying more if it's going to contain less episodes? And by we I mean the consumers, which doesn't actually include me.

Ya' gotta understand, that's the maximum retail price. Go to any Best Buy or Walmart on street release day and you'll find it for $30-$35.

Ah. I should have considered that.

Well it is sort of how I see Funi breaking it up, sure there doesn't happen anything special at the end of some of these seasons but it is quite hard to always end it with a bang.
So I kept for a consistency of about 30 episodes and not breaking up what I thought could be a mayor event and this is what I'd get at.
I suppose especially the Android saga is quite mild without the Vegeta vs. #18 battle, but it is just a guess.
I originally broke it down to this:
075 - 117 Dragon Ball Z Season 3: Freeza Saga = 43
118 - 153 Dragon Ball Z Season 4: Android Saga = 36 (After the Garlic Jr. saga)
154 - 194 Dragon Ball Z Season 5: Cell Saga = 41 (Vegeta en Trunks emerge form tRoSaT)
but for some reason I suspect Funi to make nine boxsets, that's why I kept a consistency of 30 episodes, with the first season being an exception to set things up.
This way they will also have 3 boxes per mayor DBZ Arc.

I havent heard anything about a book in this set. They would almost have to include one to keep the flow of this line of DVD's. Actually... it is FUNimation so...

Seriously...Season One should've ended with episode thirty-five and this one should've begun with thirty-six.

I suppose I shall pick this up when I get the chance, hopefully for the same dirt cheap price I got Season One for, $35.99.
