Should you disregard parts of the series?
Should there be an official canon to one consice story from "Goku meets Bulma" till "Goku flights off with Shinron"? Or should every fan be able to picks and choose what he himself decides is true and the rest is at most a dream sequence gone bad?
I pretty much only frequent two Dragonball forums and in both there are individuals who have stated that they at times with mentally omit certain events that they feel should not be in the over all story.
It can be considered to Star Wars fan having a blindspot whenever Jar-Jar Binks shows up on screen.
But would you really be a fan of the series if you totally disregard parts of it?

Since I haven't read so much of the manga, and have seen most of the series, I don't really disregard too many parts of it.
In fact I like to add onto it with certain movies, and specials.
The only time I can really omit anything is when a dub line screws something up.
Hmm... actually, now that I think about it, the one thing that really pisses me off is the filler of Piccolo blowing up Goku's ship... only to have it re-used (miraculously) as soon sa Goku decides to leave for Namek.
But when it comes to GT, I just ignore it completely, or figure out stupid ass ways that certain things make sense, like SSJ4 Gogeta...

NO. It's all in good fun. Everyone needs to take the sticks out of their butts and have fun with it. Who cares if parts aren't 100% approved by Toriyama. It's a fucking cartoon and doesn't hold any real value in the past/present/future world.

Thing is, all fans "mentally ommitt" stuff. Toriyama has contradicted himself. Such as Goku acctually going to the moon, thus breathing in space. Cell's whole head/nucleus thing. King Piccolo's Demon Kids. We just make theories up to cover it.

Not sure about Piccolo's kids, but it was stated by Cell himself that as long as his head is in tact, he can regenerate his body. Well, Goku blows the holy hell out of his entire upper body, yet he still regenerates. I don't really care, it was a great scene.BrollysKin wrote:What did he say about Cell and King Piccolos kids?

He contradicted it. You know, the whole 'Nucleus in head, can regenerate. But Goku blew his head off with a Kamehameha!!'BrollysKin wrote:What did he say about Cell and King Piccolos kids?
I've barely seen much of the series. But it doesn't really matter. A fan can skip or disregard whatever part they want, it's how they view it. Not much of an issue to me.

I'm a manga purist, but that doesn't mean I completely disregard things that happen in the anime that contradict the manga.
It's just that Garlic Jr... well, kinda sucks.
As for GT, I watch it like a really long TV special.

It really depends what kind of fan you are, I guess. There are fans who watch/read the series for the sake of entertainment and there are fans who watch it for the sake of knowing every. little. thing. I like to ignore things like Garlic Junior and parts of GT, but some canon parts of the series are questionable as well. Personally, I think I know enough about the series as a whole through following it out of enjoyment, even though I’m not one to always refer to characters as their original/Japanese titles..

You can call me Rick because I'm not actually Piccolo.
I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

Personally, I don't disregard any part of the three anime series, mainly because I'm more an anime purist and have my own point of view of the entire canon/universe/continuity that I prefer to keep separate from the manga. This means I count all anime filler, the TV specials, and the GT series as part of the overall grand anime timeframe. Also, I've come to terms with fitting a few of the DBZ movies in continuity with the anime trilogy, specifically DBZ movies 1, 5, 9, and 13. I've given my reasons many times as to why I choose these methods of preferring to view the anime chronology and in no way am saying that's how everyone should view it, just simply how I see it. I do gotta say, if ever I get a chance to sit down and actually watch the whole thing as I view it, it'd go down as something like this:
Bardock Special.
Original DragonBall Series -- Episodes 1 - 153.
Dead Zone Movie.
DragonBall Z Series -- Episodes 1 - 117.
Trunks Special.
DragonBall Z Series -- Episodes 118 - 125 (till the point where the screen freezes as the 3 years quickly pass by).
Cooler's Revenge Movie.
DragonBall Z Series -- Episodes 125 (from the last minute of this episode when the 3 years have passed) - 194.
Bojack Unbound Movie.
DragonBall Z Series -- Episodes 195 - 288.
Wrath of the Dragon Movie.
DragonBall Z Series -- Episodes 289 - 291.
DragonBall GT Series -- Episodes 1 - 64 (right up to the final 8 minute sequence, culminating with Goku departing with Shenlong).
Goku Jr. Special.
DragonBall GT Series -- Episode 64 (The final 8 minutes, 100 years later).

I don't ignore many parts of the series unless the really contradict something important, like Kaio samma describing how planet Vegeta was destroyed. If something is off a little bit I try to come up with my own reasoning. For example, with Piccolo Daimao's "children" I think of them not as regular children but more a creation of some kind, they are fully grown straight out of their eggs after all.

...then why are you here discussing it? (or needlessly bumping the DBZ topic over at AnimeOnDVD?BrollysKin wrote:It's a fucking cartoon and doesn't hold any real value in the past/present/future world.

As for what I ignore: The general stupid crap Toei makes up that blows up in their faces later on. (...like they continue to do so in One Piece.

Also, I pretty much disregard GT except for the ending, which was the only worthwhile thing about that series.

Funny this came up because I wrote exactly about this a few days ago on why I believe that there was an important reason in why some new things added can change your experience of the series completely.

" Everyone has a choice in how to experience the full dragon ball story and I think that adding or taking away movies/sagas makes a big difference in the experience because of the things you know that will come or ironic moments. (for example, if you consider the Bojack movie to be "canon" then the moment where Goku dies against Cell will have extra irony.
But for me, I cant put Movie 1 (a great movie) in my full story because it takes away the surprise of Gohan being really powerful and also it takes away how big it was that Goku and Piccolo were going to fight together for the first time vs. Radditz.
Also the same for my favorite Dragon ball movie (9) because it makes the moment with Gohan and Cell less unique as Goku helps him again.
But the Garlic Junior saga is fun like the movies in many ways, but I cant see it as a direct continuation of the main story. For me it is like watching: The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, then "Jar Jar's Big Adventure", and then Revenge of the Sith. . This is the same as I said on another post of how I see "GT" as like adding a new short chapter in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy about Frodo being evil and the rings returning just to make money. It breaks the original intention and the point of the original story.
After seeing how Akira Toriyama is a genious in writting and how dragon ball is one grand relating story, I preffer to just experience how he intended (and add the galactic tournament at the start of the anime buu saga
). "
Just my opinion
