Shin Butoden

Post by Timo » Mon Mar 19, 2007 8:39 am

Let's talk about this sexy and almost forgotten game for the Sega Saturn.
Shin Butoden is – in my point of view – the highlight of the Butoden series as well as the holy grail of the "oldschool" DBZ fighting games (16 and 32bit).

You have a great selection of characters, although many fighters are out of competition in my opinion (the "fun" characters like Muten Roshi, Mr. Satan and chibi Goku – and overpowered fighters like Gogeta).

The gameplay is quite similar to the prequels for the Super Famicom. The differences are that this time, there is a real combo system, it's faster, you can "escape" to a different "part" of the stage (nice "simulation of 3D") and it's harder to counter the super moves.

Sure, it's not a game for everyone. It's very different to other fighting games and at the beginning you'll have a hard time getting used to the controls and execution of the special moves. Furthermore, each character has a lot of (sometimes similar) moves and some move and character changes suck in my opinion. For example, Vegeta is much stronger and easier to control in Super Butoden 2.

I uploaded some clips (on youtube of course):

The final part will follow when I'm at home.

I love this game too. I couldn't stop playing when I first got it. And I still play it occassionally. The controls are very responsive and the attacks are way faster than Butoden 1-3. But that also makes it kinda difficult, especially since I don't know how to counter-attack against super moves like the Kamehameha or Big Bang Attack. It would've been nice to be able to have a beam war, like in Butoden 2 & 3. That's about the only thing that bothers me.

Other than that, the graphics are excellent; sound effects are crisp; the bgm (soundtrack) is awesome!; great looking stages; and it has almost every fighter in the series. I wanted Android 17 and the movie villains to be in there. But what can you do.

I like the game, but the computer's extremely cheap at times.

Mr. Satan mode is the highlight.

Anytime I see 'Shin Butoden', I think of Ultimate Battle 22. What's the honest difference between those two titles because coming from personal experience, UB22 is horrible.

You can call me Rick because I'm not actually Piccolo.
I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

I THINK the problem of UB22 is that they tried to make it "modern". Those crappy 3D stages, ridiculous special effects (the Ki blasts...'nuff said) and...I don't know, I forced myself to forget this shit.

Furthermore UB22 was too slow and had stupid controlls.

The basic gameplay is similar but SB enhanced the Butoden series, instead of put in half-baked "features" and graphics.

SB isn't perfect and there are a lot things which could be better in my opinion, but it's deeper and well thought out.

SB: take the butotan series and UB22, fuse them with the potara and then have it go supersaiyan.
If I had only managed to get my hands on this game when I first wanted it...

I think UB22 had some creative things with movesets and characters and such, but it's pretty well unanimous that the graphics were... umm... good enough for me to tell what was going on, and that's about it.

But SB utilizes the Saturn's graphics engines (cool), enhances butotan things (awesome), and builds on the UB22 cast creatively and adds the Mr. Satan mode... I still want it. :'(. Actually, that's the reason I got a Saturn in the first place was with the hope of getting to play this game.

Shin Butoden's gameplay and graphics make UB22 feel like a SNES game.

The SNES games were a million times better than UB22.

Maybe off topic... but I tend to think of UB22 as being better than Final Bout in every area other than graphics. Though finalbout having the GenkiDama and the style of Meteos was a plus.
And really, I could see UB22 better, so... yeah.
But SB has all of the good aspects of UB22, and none of the bad. Wow, that eliminates the need for my previous post...
