DBZ toys

Post by TGDweezl » Fri May 28, 2004 10:01 am

I'm kind of a toy collector and I'd like to know everyone's opinion of the current line of DBZ/GT toys.

Was anyone other than me severely disappointed when Irwin stopped making the DBZ toys and JAKKS Pacific took over? I mean honestly, the whole "Metallica Edition" or whatever is really pathetic. The VS figures like Piccolo VS Cell, etc aren't too bad. I'll give JAKKS credit for adding figs of Yajirobe and Korin. And that they brought back characters like Nappa, Raditz, and some of the Ginyu Force.

My big problem with JAKKS is the "Metallica Edition" and how poorly done the figures look compared to Irwin. Irwin went into pretty good detail on their figures whereas IMHO JAKKS kinda threw them together, and there is less articulation on the newer figures (elbows, knees, neck, etc.) and the coloration in some spots looke shoddy.

Like I said, I'd like to know your opinions on this. Because of my personal feelings I totally refuse to collect/buy JAKKS' version of DBZ/GT figures due to how ugly they look in comparison to the Irwin figures.

Can't give any opinion. Sadly the Toys 'R' Us sucks ass near me. Wal-Mart's even worse: when they remodelled they "accidentally" forgot to include a new section for the toy department. Complaints all around. Customers always complain to the wrong people though. It's not like it's the cashier's fault. :P

I've not even seen pics of these supposed "Metallica Editions", so I wouldn't know...

And in my opinion, Jakks figures on the whole look better. There are some that look just plain fugly (SS Trunks, GT, anyone?), but they are better molded and detailed than most of the Irwin figures, especially the earlier ones.
Battle High 2, starring Kyle Hebert as well as myself, has been released on Xbox 360, OUYA, PC, Linux, Mac, and Xbox One!

When I heard Jakks had taken over the master toy license I practically wept, the new figures are almost as poorly done as the Jakks line of WWE toys. The Irwin figures I thought were fairly well done, once we got past their initial moronic mistakes (i.e. figures with guns).

Jakks added articulation, and made some of the best action figures in the series. Vegetto, "Battle Damaged Goku" from the Goku vs. Raddits 2 pack. The Freeza Vs. Goku 2 pack. Any of the new Piccolo figures, the 2nd form Cell figure, Battle Damaged Vegeta and Mecha Freeza are all pretty awesome toys.

Jakks' toys are absolute garbage. I followed Irwin's line, which, though it had its mess-ups, was decent. Jakks, on the other hand... I've watched them show their prototype figures, looking perfect, and then release absolute trash. Last year they released prototype figures for the Cyborg Freeza and Battle-Damaged Vegeta. The figures were gorgeous and I was thrilled when they came out. I went to Toys-R-Us and got a rude jolt of reality. They looked like... like... things that can't be described without profanity. They were weirdly proportioned, their paint was awful, the plastic was cheap, etc... I saw their other figures, which were just as bad. Contorted faces, shoddily put together, etc...

Then I saw the figures for other animes. Why is it that American DB fans seem to get the absolute crappiest merchandise?

The If Labs figures are really good at least.

Yeah, the IF Labs figures are absolutely stunning. I'm not big on the newer ones but they still look good. The older ones like Lord Slug, Cooler, Piccolo, etc were so great looking that I nearly bought them all.

Yeah, once Irwin got past giving everyone guns and red DBs they looked very nice and I was deeply saddened when Jakks took over. BTW, has anyone acquired all 7 DBs from the old Irwin figures? I couldn't find like #1,4, and 7 I think. Kinda odd that Irwin would make DB characters with DBs in the package but not be able to get them all....marketing ploy?

I couldn't find those Dragon Balls either. I've got lots of 2, 3, 5, and 6 star ones, but not those. I'd always fgured that I wasn't getting them because they came with older figures. Weird.

Yes, I found it very odd that no kid or collector can have all 7 Dragonballs to paly/display thier figs with. I mean wouldn't it be cool to have all 7 DBs with the Dende fig and like Bulma, Yamucha, and Krillin all around and like use the Goku w/Halo and Wings for a display? And also what kid wouldn't love to have all 7 DBs to act out his own imagination or favorite episodes of DBZ? I wonder if Irwin intended to make all 7 but messed up somewhere. :?

You know they could have made even more of a profit by also putting in the seven Namekian dragonballs with figures from the Namek saga.

I think you're being too hard on Irwin. Everything you're proposing would require logic.

Yes, let us not use logic. Let's not give the fans what they want/deserve. Granted they made a wider variety of figurs than SBC but still. If you're gonna put DBs in the package make sure you can get all 7. Is common sense really not all that common anymore?

I got all seven... but it took the purchase of damn near every character to get the last ball.

It's a marketing ploy. It's got to be.

You've got all seven? Which characters did you have to buy to get the #1, #4, and #7 Dragon Balls?

The #1 star-ball? Those come with the chibi Trunks with freaky sideways arms (rerelease so he can use a flamethrower that comes with. :? ) and the Goten rerelease with same freaky arms (so he can use a machine gun that comes with :? ).

I know because those are the ONLY DBZ toys I can get in my area.

Are you sure they weren't the Namekian balls? I seem to recall them being fairly big in comparison to the character.

(I doubt it was intentional, but it does work as as excuse.)

Yes they were too big and unfortunately, I'm sure that wasn't intentional at all. :(
