Prospects for New Specials

Post by Chuquita » Wed Apr 04, 2007 4:18 pm

So I found a scan of that new Dr. Slump special that aired with the One Piece movie last month: http://img183.imageshack.us/my.php?image=page4xr1.jpg
(Sorry I would've used ImageShack but it's down for some reason on me)

Just by looking at it I can tell its something about Mashirito's son wanting revenge (for his father's death?) by building an evil version of Arale to battle her. As far as I know, both are new characters.

Which brings me to the topic; if Toei ever does plan to make a new dbz animated special or movie (or series), would it bother you if they inserted some brand new characters like this?

I'd be fine with new villains (bring on all the new villains you want, Toei), but the idea of any new heroes makes me think "mary-sue" and I'm a little uncomfortable with that.

Are there any DBZ cameos? Or is it strictly Dr Slump?

I think there are two ways to bring in new hero(e?)s. Well, there are degrees on each of these, but generally speaking... take the Tapion MarySue route, or take the H.O.M.E.R. route and just have the character be there without explanation.
I think a combination of the two might work. I.E, we'd need to give any new characters enough attention that we get to know them, but once they're established we can get the real plot moving and they can just have character moments just like everyone else. Or maybe I'm just talking about my attempt at coming up with a storyline that I'll probably turn into a fanfic. XD.

Actually... I'd like to put it in animated form, put it in a box set with the planned DBZ RPG, and send it to Mike as a Christmas present that he probably won't like. ^_^. But now I'm getting big-headed.

... Ur... Yeah. I think unless they really knew what they were doing, adding new heroes would be dangerous... could be done really awesome-like, but could also be a load of bleh.

I'd say it'd be a lot like GT to me if it was a series, I wouldn't watch it. It's exactly why I wonder why people are bitching about GT. If you don't like it, don't buy it and watch it for goodness sake...

I wouldn’t mind if like Oda for the movies, Toriyama designed the characters or at least had some sort of major involvement with it. However I draw the line at taking away screen time from the characters we know and have seen grow over the span of the series for a character we will only see for 90 minutes or a few episodes.

Surly any character introduced this late into the series would be a mary-sue.
Unless Toei purposely create a flawed character, which is pointless considering Toei won’t have much time to expand and flesh out the character.
Their existence would be useless.

What about a character that has two purposes: 1, to be a new character, and 2, to develop or foil other parts of the story that would otherwise be neglected? A lead-in of sorts?
I just realized that what I'm thinking of might as well be considered two separate stories. Hee.
