DBZ Fighting Games vs Other Fighters

Post by TAS » Mon Apr 16, 2007 2:22 am

This is more of a question for those who are fans of the DBZ fighting games and other fighting games in general, but basicly I was wondering what DBZ fans here feel about the DBZ fighters in comparision to other fighting games out there (Street Fighter, Tekken, etc) or how they stack up against other fighters or vice versa.

Do you guys think/feel that the DBZ fighters of today (or yester year) stack up against other fighting games out of there of the now (or past) on equal, greater, or lesser level?

Like has DBZ fighters gone as far as they can with Budokai, Sparking, and Sparking? Is there much further for them to go, or do you feel that they lack certain aspects other fighters have or should include elements that other fighters have that they haven't yet or what?

Should DBZ fighters be compared to other fighting games like Tekken, Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive, etc? Should they and other anime/liscensed fighters be off in their own little group or whatever?

And speaking of other anime/liscensed fighters do you guys think that the DBZ fighters stand above all the other anime fighting games like those based on Naruto and Bleach and whatever others?

I myself have been on fighting game forums and know how general fighting game fans or hardcore fighting game fans feel about liscesned fighters, but I don't know that I've ever heard about it from the opposite perspective, ie those who are anime fans and/or fighting game fans, or does that involve some level of bias, like are DBZ fans always going to like any DBZ game just because they like DBZ or whatever other liscense or franchise?

For comparision issues I'm going to list off a couple fighting games or series in case people have a hard time remember what all is out there or was at one time.

(alphabetical order)

Battle Arena Toshiden
Bloody Roar
Bushido Blade
Darkstalkers
Dead or Alive
Ehrgiez
Fatal Fury
Guilty Gear
Killer Instinct
King of Fighters
Last Blade
Mortal Kombat
Power Stone
Rival Schools
Samurai Shodown
Soul Calibur
Star Gladiator
Street Fighter
Tekken
Virtua Fighter
World Heroes

Note: I didn't list any liscensed fighters (Marvel, JoJo's Bizzare Adventure, etc) because I feel those should be lumped in their own section or with other liscensed/anime fighters.

This makes me think of something that happened this past Saturday. Most of the time my cousin (just turned 8) and I were playing "Budokai Tenkaichi", much variability... as the game play can be incredibly awesome, or incredibly dull and annoying depending on how the fight goes.

Then he decided to get out X-Men: Mutant Academy. And despite having been decent at more classic fighting games before getting hooked on Budokai and BT, he had no idea how to do much of anything that involved multiple buttons; and the vast majority of d-pad moves from XMA use only two directions, as opposed to the insane hcb-hcf stuff found in DBZ:UB22. Take it as you will...

I think if the Budokai or Sparking! games had... more... variety in character abilities, they'd be right up there with classics, though. (Ok, so there is some variety: it's bloody well impossible for Yamcha to defeat Kid Buu. I think if ever I play that game seriously, super ultra SSJ3+ characters shall be banned unless there is an agreement that both players will use one...).

Hmm... I'm having difficulty finding something specific to focus on with this post, so I'll go... umm... look for notes or something.

In my own opinion, I don't think they will every catch up and be with in the same league as the games that have been listed. The main reason is that the focus on the Dragonball Z aspects gets more priority than the Fighting Game aspects of it. I not saying that that neccisarily is a bad thing but they have to find a balance somewhere. The only thing they can really do at this point is either go backwards and start out with the Fighting Game aspects and later on focus on adding Dragonball elements.

Super Dragonball Z is the one current title, to me atleast, that seems to the closest to a actual Fighting Game released within the last few years. But see, I'm also hoping for a resurgence in 2-D fightering games. And maybe get a Dragonball one in there. But living in reality (only because I can't seem to find a drug that will allow me to have delusions while not cause any serious health-risk side effects) I know this will not be happening. Although, someone could create one on thier own and share it with everyone.

What the Sparking games need is to stop calling themselves fighting games. When people hear the term "Fighting Game" they think of the 2-D style of Street Fighter/King Of Fighters or the 3-D style of Virtua Fighter/Tekken. If they were to switch back to the Budokai style then I wouldn't mind as much. Sparking also needs to have more than just two fighters going at it at a time or give us some online play.

And the next gen consoles need to add some of the older Dragonball games to their download roster and we'll all be happy.

I've always seen Dragonball Z Budokai 3 as my favourite fighting game, ever.
You see, it may be a lot different than other fighting games, but when it comes to it, its still a fighting game itself, and its a wonderful game, even some of my friends, who don't even like Dragonball, end up picking DBZB3 as the game to play instead of the other games on my shelf, like Street Fighter, Tekken, DOA, Guilty Gear, and others.
Its just a downright great game, and though it really put a lot of effort into being unlike other fighting games, I think it made it that much better, and more refreshing. Even games that came out after wards, like Super DBZ, I though were far insuperior to DBZB3, I suppose its just my oppinion, but I'd choose it anyday over the likes of SF, Tekken, GG, DOA ect, and thats me NOT being biased.

Out of the list you mentioned, the only fighting games I like more over the recent DBZ games would be DOA, Power Stone, & Virtua Fighter. Other than than that I like the more recent DBZ game over the others. I do agree though, in reality, most DBZ games don't really fare out well with other fighters.

Dragonabll games tend to get stale and repetative very soon. And although the Street Fighter/King Of Fighter style of game are also repetative, I never get tired of them. If I pick up my Street Fighter 3 or Alpha 3 I can play it and end up hours later and realised that I had been playing for that long.
