DragonBall (R2) DVD 1: Dissection

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Wed Apr 18, 2007 9:00 pm

I know a lot of people here probley won't be getting the DragonBall single disc, but as fans your probley just a little curious as to what the DVD contains. Well, here is a little dissection of DragonBall DVD 1...

First thing you'll notice is that the cover is a tad different then whats shown on most Internet sites...

Image

This is because the DVD case is in a plastic slip case. When its taken out of the plastic case its the same image you seen everywhere else.

This is the back of the DVD case with the plastic case on...

Image

... and this is the back without the plastic case...

Image

Looks exactly like the layout they used for the back of the DBZ discs.

This is the booklet (insert?) that folds out. They used this same idea with the DBZ DVD's also...

Image

This DVD came with some advertising slips which include the Dr.Slump DVD box set, The DBZ Single Discs, Harukanaru Gokû Densetsu, and a Goku trading card that advertises for Jump World. All those had some pretty nice art but look at this...

Image

Yuppers, thats mother flippin Gohan and Trunks from the alternate future with new school art style. This slip was an ad for Shin Budokai 2 for PSP. I hope thats going to be the cover art...

The main menu...

Image

Ok there horrible. Next is just a random shot from the DVD...

Not digging the footage at all. Too dark looking. I also think the color feels a little bit off. I know that someone will yell at me for thinking this, I don't want to know what kind of remastering was done. I really don't give a fuck about Toei/Funi.

Thanks for the review though Tanooki, very cool.

As always, Tanooki comes through with an awesome and imformative post filled with eye candy! I also feel the colors feel a bit off... The DBZ ones seem fine, but I wonder what the deal is with DB? :/

It might just be that its the first episode of a series that was done in 1986. :?

Perhaps... Anyone know where I can get DragonBox screencaps from later DB? Perhaps Piccolo Daimao or Ten Shin Han? Just for quality comparison's sake.

Well, these are the very first episodes of DB, so of course they won't be in as good shape as the later episodes of DBZ. Here's what kanzentai.com said about the remastering:

Since the source material is the original cel photography, the picture is already as pristine as it will ever be. However, as with any film, it is bound to suffer some damage. Pony Canyon has taken the time to carefully remove all damage from the film, presenting us with a perfectly clean picture, yet never compromising the integrity of the actual animation. On top of this, since they have gone back to the 16mm films, they can create an all-new frame alignment!

Based on what's said, stuff like blotches have been removed, but nothing's been done "compromising the integrity of the actual animation" like brightening up the colors. I guess this also clears up EX's comment in the podcast on the DragonBoxes being "quasi-remastered."

My only complaint about this release is the whole slipcover thing. That's pretty odd to me. Though, the Shin Budoukai 2 image is pretty sweet and reminiscent of that one image of SSJ2 Gohan (complete with his Piccolo shoulder pads and cape) firing a kamehameha with SSJ Goku behind him.

Y'all are just catching that?

I pointed it out back in on of the SB2 discussion threads.

Whatever. Anyway, I know it is really old film, but it wouldn't have been a bad thing for them to up the brightness just a little bit for those early episodes, IMO.

Am I correct in assuming those slipcases are the first pressing extras (which only the first three volumes get)? The Japanese sites called them "Outer Cases," and I wasn't sure what exactly they meant by it.

I guess I don't mind as much that I probably won't be getting the first pressings, then.

Hmm, people complained about Funi's big orange brick/box/crap, and this design is as irritating, if not more. And yeah, the thing that caught my eye was the psp game too, haha.

I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

Well, here's one from episode 111:

I think the quality gets better as the episodes go on, obviously because of the improved technology. But yeah, I agree that a little boost in brightness to the really early episodes wouldn't hurt.

This is a preemptive, so please dont kill me, but I think that shot might be from one of the bootlegs because it does look a little bit too bright.

Trust me, the 'improved technology' in the three years between the original Dragonball's start and end was nowhere near significant. Infact, the method of production was basically consistient throughout.

I think these R2 DVDs look gorgeous compared to the 'big-orange brick'. Now only if they weren't so expensive...

Tanooki, could you post a picture of the spine of the DVD case please? I'm interested in seeing how they'd look lined up on a shelf.

Oh that reminds me, it looks like the DVD's will form a picture when they are lined up next to each other. And... I'll see if I can scan it later. :D

...Looking over the slipcase again, it's a lot better than I realized. I actually looked at the calligraphy on the back cover (only skimmed over the overall design before), and I just noticed it's all technique names from the DB era!

Kikouhou, Taiyouken, Rougafuufuuken, Haikyuuken, Shiyouken, Zanzouken, Tajuu Zanzouken, Bunshin no Jutsu, Mafuuba, Bankoku Bikkuri Shou, Iaigiri, Dodonpa, Kamehameha, Iai-something, Bakurikimaha, Hasshuken, Yoi Ko Minminken, Mafuuba, Bukuujutsu, Mafuuba Gaeshi...

The only thing I don't recognize is the iai stuff, but it probably refers to Yajirobe's sword slashings or something. I don't mean to be a showoff or anything, but I'm a huge fan of the DB era, so for me, this is pretty cool to notice now that I've taken a closer look at what's written there. DBZ, even though it's longer and more fighting occurs, doesn't have nearly as many Toriyama-named techniques as DB does.

Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.
