Is it possible this was Toriyama's intention?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Is it possible this was Toriyama's intention?

Post by Lavender Saiyan » Sun Apr 29, 2007 11:12 pm

Earlier today, my father was watching a documentary on Martial Arts. In this they said that in ancient times, only the rich had swords. Thus the poor were forced to forge their own weapons. As a result this is what created weapons like Nunchucks and Bo's.

So my question is, is it possible that Toriyama had this in mind when making Goku have a Bo as a weapon as a child. Also Trunks having a sword. Given, Trunks world was in peril, but it's likely Bulma still had some cash.

Goku had Nyoi-bo because he's based on Sun Wukong. :)

The only problem I see with using this as a thesis for a DB analysis paper (XD!) is that Yajirobe had a sword and was out in the middle of the woods (If I recall correctly, didn't he like, get run out of his village or something?). Although he has that whole lazy Samurai thing going on, so maybe it's a family thing?

Yeah... Explain Yajirobe and you've got yourself a thesis. :D.

I'm guess what this means is that the wealthy could afford to purchase high quality and some decoritive weapons. Whereas the poorer people had to make thier own weapons or purchase weapons of a lesser quality. Anyone can have a sword or shield or axe or whatever. Unless it was outlawed to own weapons.

Maybe Trunks had the sword because his world was in peril. He wanted to look cool so he looted some shop.

You do realise Dragonball is basically a parody of HK kung fu movies right? :D

Exactly. A Journey to the West adaption with kung fu elements mixed with comedy; sorta like a fantasy-type, old school kung fu movie, if you will (mainly Dragon Ball). Which is why it's my favorite anime, since I'm such a huge fan of the old school kung fu genre of films.
