Translation question

Post by Big Momma » Wed May 02, 2007 5:40 pm

I'm not sure whether this goes into the music section or not, but it's been bugging me for ages.
What does "Hitori Janai"(DBGT ending) Translate too? With my limited Japanese skills my guess it something like "not alone" or "not one" or something like that, but I'm probably wrong, could someone help me out with this, thanks! :D

Well I know Julian's always had it translated as "I'm Not Alone", in the music database on the main site, but that's about all I know concerning the title's translation.

Yes, "hitori ja nai" does means " am not alone." The subject (I) is dropped from the sentence and left to context decide, as it usually is in Japanese. In the context of the song, the subject is implied to be "I", as one would expect. Hitori does mean "one (person)", although it often is used to mean "alone", and "ja nai" is the informal negative of the verb "da" or "desu", thus meaning "[is/am/are] not".

For your information, I was first introduced to the song by a midi I found while doing a search a couple years back; the title of the file was "No Longer Alone". I'm not exactly sure why (since I know not the song's lyrics); "hitori ja nai" does indeed mean "[ I] am not alone".
