"Dragon Ball" Moss.

Post by SonEric84 » Mon Jun 04, 2007 8:10 pm

I was doing a search on ebay for "dragon ball" and I came across this: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Dragon-Ball-Mos ... dZViewItem Now, I'm not sure I get it..are they calling it dragon ball moss to appeal to fans of the show? I think this might be the weirdest item I have seen yet. (Although the horse "rug" ranks up there too.) Anyway, just figured I would share.

I know there's a species of flower named after Sailor Moon ("Happy Barry Sailor Moon"), so I tried searching for information on this to see if something similar happened here. But the only information I can seem to find about "Dragon Ball Moss" is in this guy's auctions, and threads like this one asking what the stuff is, with none of them older than May 2007.

But one of those threads I found says the scientific name for the species that guy is selling is called Physcomitrium eurystomum Sendtn. So searching in Japanese came up with sites like this one that tells me the Japanese name for it is 広口苔 or ヒロクチゴケ Hirokuchigoke (literally, "wide-mouthed moss"), but I can't find anything connecting that to Dragon Ball.

This list on Wiki (lacking sources, though) says Physcomitrium eurystomum is called "Norfolk Bladder-moss" in English. So I also searched for that, and found this page, which connects the full name of Physcomitrium eurystomum Sendtn to "Norfolk Bladder-moss," and cites references dating back to 1980. I also found this chart dated 2005 connecting the terms.

Conclusion? Unless someone can prove me wrong, I think this seller is the one who decided to call it "Dragon Ball Moss," and it's far from an official name like Happy Barry Sailor Moon.

Hmm, that's pretty weird, thanks for all the info. Although I don't see how moss would appeal to a dragonball fan even if it has little orange balls on it. I guess if people will buy the widescreen sets maybe the seller figures fans will buy anything.

So it is not a plant that is called Dragon Ball Moss but a plant that is called Dragon Ball Moss to make Dragon Ball fans buy it?

I wouldn't say "appeal." It was probably named as such by the seller so it would show up in more searches. I mean, how many people do you know who shop for moss via eBay? The only thing I could think of is that the seller is hoping that some dragon ball fan would stumble into it while doing a search and happen to be a gardner who just happened to be out of um... DB Moss.

Well, if that were the case, why does he continue to call it "Dragon ball moss" in the item description? I think he's just trying to rip someone off... D:

Hmm... interesting... interesting indeed. o__O
Art, etc. links taken down for now. Will be updated at some point. I dunno.

Found a few other forum topics about this. Looks like it's been posted on quite a few Aquarium related auction sites as well. It's called a Physcomitrium eurystomum Sendtn.

...Wow, so is that why he calls it that? Cause, one episode has a plant that looks like it and the next minute, it's famous!
