How the "Saiyan language" would sound...

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

How the "Saiyan language" would sound...

Post by SaiyaMel » Thu Aug 02, 2007 5:08 am

I am open to and would like to see your opinion(s)/suggestions on how you feel i should make it sound (how it flows when spoken) like to make it particularly fitting - like a combination of German, Klingon and maybe Russian? (or some other language to add? - if so please specify)

I have already decided to include such gruff sounds as (in X-SAMPA) the voiceless uvular fricative /X/ and uvular affricate /q_X/, and don't feel like dropping them.. :P

A Saiyan language?

It'd be like a violent form of sign language with a lot of accompanying grunts.

... That sounds like a description of fighting...
Holycrap, that giveth an idea!

*Saiyan#1 is walking down the street*
*saiyan#2 swoops in and attacks*
*saiyan#1 is beat to a bloody pulp and lies sprawled on the ground*
*saiyan#2 takes a bag of gold and runs off*
*Freeza Henchman#1 walks up*
FH1(to S1): Are you ok?
S1(getting up): Oh, sure.
FH1: But that guy just beat the crap out of you...
S1: Nah, he was just telling me that his bounty-hunter uncle is coming to town and I should be on the lookout.
FH1: But he stole your gold...
S1: Oh that... we started carrying those when Freeza came along so no one would realize we were just having casual conversations.

... ... ... No, I'm serious. That could be really awesome. XD

But as for verbal communication... when I think about the attitudes of the Saiyans and the sounds of the mentioned languages... I tend to think a mix of German+Russian+Japanese (in sound anyway) would be believable.

Now excuse me while I find a project into which the idea of using fighting as communication can be incorporated, despite the fact that someone else probably did it already.

Personally I would think it like a kind of caveman-japanese, with hard wovels and consonants.

Something like Ancient Latin. Few terms for abstract concepts (to the point where a hypothetical Saiyan poet would be unable to express himself using native words) and letters that look pretty bitchin' when carved into marble.

In the extremely unlikely event that everything in the universe does not speak English, Even tho it does. I think Russian would be good, i can't imagine a saiyan saying kapla! whatever that means in klingon.

I can only imagine what violent sign language would be like.....

I'd imagine the saiyajin language be somewhat like japanese, only lots of short words with plenty of consonants thrown in.
I can't imagine the saiyajin using a language with mostly long words; they'd want to get their point across pretty fast.
On hiatus.

You'd probably punch someone in the face to say hello.

I also think that the saiyan language would be very very primitive with a lot of grunts and cries to express their emotions.
Don't forget King Kai story about the Saiyan People. They look like real cavemen when they show us the flashback!

But I read in Wikipedia that a certain fan base of Dragonball has invented a saiyan language (a little bit like Quiglon language in Star Trek) with grammar rules and so.....People have heard of it???

I always imagined the Saiyan language as being some sort of cross between Latin and Klingon.

Why Latin, Kaboom? i think any phonological elements from a Romance language (except for maybe the trilled r), would be out of character.. but please enlighten me.

Someone is creating and putting together the Saiyan language..and that someone is me btw. :) here for some more details

Oh and what is "Quiglon" - you mean Klingon?

That means "good luck" or something like that.

I'd imagine it as something with a lot of hard sounds. Like German... or Klingon. :P

I have in fact, added no long vowels and consonant clusters (words consisting of almost all consonants and few vowels - as you described) are prevalent in many of the words i have added to the lexicon, so far.

German makes a sort of sense. Harsh and guttural, and if they need a new word they mash a couple old ones together.

In terms of harshness and gutturalness - Klingon puts German to shame. just a random note..

Oh, and (meant to ask this earlier) i would like to hear samples of voice recording from some of you guys (like the Tullace recordings) - just spout out lines of gibberish that sounds "Saiyan".. :D

I will then listen to each one and pick/choose which one i like most..

Thanx in advance
